White House mum on Sykes’ GOP jokes
‘I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker,’ says comic at WHCA dinner..
WASHINGTON - The White House is keeping its distance from an entertainer's joke comparing conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh to a terrorist. On Monday, presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs was asked for President Barack Obama's reaction to Wanda Sykes' comedic performance Saturday at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
"I don’t know how guests get booked," said Gibbs. "That’s a White House Correspondents' Association thing."
He said he hadn't spoken to the president about Sykes, but added, "I think there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy. I think there’s no doubt that 9/11 is part of that." Sykes, who served as mistress of ceremonies, jabbed at Limbaugh for suggesting that he wants Obama to fail.
"So you’re saying, 'I hope America fails.' You’re like, 'I don’t care about people losing their homes, their jobs or our soldiers in Iraq.' He just wants our country to fail."
"To me, that’s treason," she added. "He’s not saying anything differently than Osama bin Laden is saying. You know you might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight."
Responding to the crowd's reaction, Sykes asked, "Too much?"
But she quickly added, "You’re laughing inside — I know you’re laughing."
She didn't stop there. "Rush Limbaugh: 'I hope the country fails.' I hope his kidneys fail, how about that? He needs a waterboarding, that’s what he needs."
Limbaugh wasn't the only Republican roasted at the dinner — former Vice President Dick Cheney was also a monologue target.
"Dick Cheney, oh my God, he's a scary man, scares me to death. I tell my kids, I says, 'Look, if two cars pull up, and one has a stranger, and the other car has Dick Cheney, you get in the car with the stranger.'"
Sykes also had former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin in her cross hairs. The Alaska governor canceled her dinner appearance after severe flooding hit her state.
She sent her husband, Todd, instead, but that didn't prevent a few jokes about her teenage daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
Still, some Democrats were also comedically targeted.
"I think you hang out too much," said Sykes of Obama. "What was that, you and Joe Biden out getting a hamburger? The two of you can’t hang out together. I mean, whose idea was that, Nancy Pelosi's? 'Hey, Why don’t you boys go out and get a bite?'"

Yes, because the other political side is always the worst possible people regardless of which side you blindly and stupidly follow thinking they can actually change the country.
I can't stand Rush Limbaugh, but I can at least be real.

Gee, I remember when the worst thing in the world you could do was "question" someone's patriotism. But calling Limbaugh a "traitor" and a "terrorist" and hoping he "dies" is hilarious? Go figure. Davd Feherty wisely apologized for wishing death upon his political adversaries. Will Wanda follow suit?

Her humor can be raw and not always funny. There was a time when she was rising up the ranks, as far as stardom. It's leveled out to where she's not a bottom-feeder anymore. That's a good thing if she saves her money.
I think her comments are considered a story, just because of the arena in which she stated them. In any other scenario, it might still be considered tacky, but it wouldn't have gotten as much media attn.
It's probably hard not to when no one laughs...This is true.

Yeah seriously, it's not like he has a political office. They invited her to entertain and she does what she always does, you don't invite Gallagher to a black tie event and then get upset you got watermelon on your suit.

Wanda is funny if you put her in front of a crowd and just let her talk. Many times I find her stories either true or just plain funny. Put her, like many people, in front of a crowd of important people and things go wrong without reason.
She did acknowledge to much and she was trying to be funny. I credit her for that and think shes funner than most of the females they tout as funny, and I think she tries harder to please a crowd because she just tries hard.

I'm disappointed because I really like here and find here comedy entertaining.
She was a regular on Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" series on HBO, and was great. She's been great in every movie she's been a part of too.....
Her stand-up bit on HBO was really, really funny too. I just like her style, someone I could hang with for sure. I am disappointed in her remarks, because I lean to right for sure. But I'm MORE disappointed that she inserted herself, ala Shawn Penn and Jeanine Grafalo-type stuff as an entertainer.
I was hoping she'd be above that fray, and not go into the same gutter that the Streisand's and the Cloony's and the Dixie Chicks and the Sarandon's of the world feel then need to jump into. It appears not, and that's a shame. Because she IS very, very funny and entertaining......

Not funny: Barack Obama laughs at Wanda Sykes “joke” about wanting Rush Limbaugh dead
By: Toby Harnden
The Telegraph (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/toby_harnden/blog/2009/05/10/not_funny_barack_obama_laughs_at_wanda_sykes_joke_ about_wanting_rush_limbaugh_dead)
May 10, 2009
What was Wanda Sykes thinking? Perhaps more to the point, what was President Barack Obama thinking when he laughed and smiled as the comedienne wished Rush Limbaugh dead?
…
Obama seemed to think this bit was pretty hilarious, grinning and chuckling and turning to share the “joke” with the person sitting on his right.
There’s not much room for differing interpretations of what Sykes said. She called Limbaugh a terrorist and a traitor, suggested that he be tortured and wished him dead.
What was his crime? Hoping that Obama’s policies - which he views as socialist - will fail.
That’s way, way beyond reasoned debate or comedy and Obama’s reaction to it was astonishing.
Imagine if a comedian “joked” that Obama was a terrorist who was guilty of treason and should be tortured and allowed to die. There would justifiably be an outcry.
But when the “joke” comes from a liberal, Obama-supporting comedienne and the target is a right-winger then the likes of Hilary Rosen and Donna Brazile are on CNN saying it’s just comedy and Limbaugh is “fair game”.
And Obama laughing when someone wishes Limbaugh dead? Hard to take from the man who promised a new era of civility and elevated debate in Washington.

I bet she thought it wouldn't get laughs and she was surprised when it did.

I haven't watched it, just read her 'too much' remark was in reaction to the crowd. I figured they either didn't laugh or let out a ooooh.
Either way, this whole irreverence act is getting old. It's like watching an old man still dressing like James Dean, with the greased hair and cigs rolled in his t-shirt sleeve and thinking 'he's still got it'.
Maybe someday civility will come back in vogue, eh?

I was disappointed that Obama laughed. The stand-up bit was not in keeping with the office Obama holds. Limbaugh has as much a right to his opinion as she does to her opinion. Her intollerance of disapproving views of Obama is a symptom of this bizare cult of personalty that surrounds Obama-if you dare to disagree, you will be singled out and punished by the popular culture. We are living in strange times.
I doubt that Bush would have laughed at a similar rant wishing death on a high profile critic of his. For all the things Bush did that I disliked, he had too much class to sit there grinning like he was in a night club.

Part of me wants to give Obama a "pass" for laughing because you're in a difficult spot up there on the dias. I've been in similar situations myself and didn't know how to react. It's tough.
On the other hand, I'm just some regular shmoe, and he's the President. What he does and how he reacts has vast implications. Plus, going into an event like that, you HAVE to know that this scenario may occur and you have to be prepared for an inappropriate joke and know how you are going to react. In that respect, he did a poor job.

Amen.
Unfortunately, concepts such as civility and respect have become anathema to an entire generation of Americans. There is no common decency. If you criticize someone for a lack of decency or civility, you're derided for being too rigid or overly religious, or (even more ridiculous) trying to limit free speech.
The fault always resides with the person who expresses discontent at being insulted, never the person who actually levies the insult, even if the insult was unwarranted. Furthermore, being offended is never justified -- unless, of course, you're offended because someone has criticized you for being offensive; only then is it acceptable to be indignant.
Shows such as Family Guy encapsulate perfectly these attitudes; being irreverent and insulting is more important than being intelligent and funny.
Personally, I see nothing amusing in the intimation that God is promiscuous, or that Mohammed works at a convenience store. Both are disrespectful, and neither is funny, quite frankly.

All I know is that I've been in a similar situation, on the dias with Ann Coulter at CPAC when she "joked" about shooting Bill Clinton (and made jokes even worse than that).
It's a very uncomfortable feeling to be up there, when many in the room are laughing, when the line was said clearly to elicit a laugh, and you are sitting up there in front of everyone.
I know that I don't agree with the shooting of Clinton, but I do know that I laughed uncomfortably at the jokes. It's a difficult position to be in.
That's why I said that "part of me wants to give him a pass."
On the other hand, as I clearly said, he needs to expect that situation to arise and be prepared to handle it better.

When has Glenn Beck ever said anything as remotely inappropriate?
Can we suggest Michael Richards was just using exaggerated device when screaming racist epithets at an audience member?
Let's not abandon analytical reasoning, because someone from our side is being a fool; people have had their feet held to the fire for less.
