View Full Version : thinking of joining the Navy reserves

I want to be a K-9 cop, but with my history, (no convictions for anything, but I do have an arrest record) I think it would be best to start out as a Navy cop as a reservist, and then apply to join the city police

I was also thinking about becoming an intelligence specialist, as I am pretty computer savvy, and once I get out I could get into a lucrative career in the IT industry

anybody ever been a reservist of any branch, and have some opinions/objections/support?

I think you would be better served by joining the Military full time vs being a reservist. (that is, if you are going to join at all)

My father (retired) and two of my brothers are Navy. My uncle (retired) and his son are Marines.

btw, I'm dead serious about joining the Navy in some capacity, the route I'm currently on is taking forever, I need to speed things up

All branches are having trouble with getting recruits these days. I doubt an arrest record will stop you. Hell the Army took Rack. :D

I'm talking about becoming a city cop, I'm probably not the ideal candidate for them right out of the gate

no doubt I could get into the military, the Marines accepted me 4 years ago, I wasn't ready then though, and chickened out last minute

Full time training, and real world work experience. Not to mention, you will meet a lot of people from all over and get to see many parts of the world when your based on a ship.

My brothers loves and hates going to sea. He said it's the best part of being in the Navy, but also doesn't like it because in many ways you are cut off from a lot of freedoms you have while not on a ship. Of course, you aren't *always* on a ship.

While the Military needs Marines, that is one branch I would avoid like the plague! Of course, thats just me. There are *some types* out there that the Marines are the way to go. Judging by what I know of you, you're not a Marine. :laugh2:

I would imagine the service time would out weigh your record. I don't know that for sure just a hunch.

Well my wife is reserves AF and Im active duty AF...if all you want to do is become a city cop I'd recommend reserves..reason being once you finish school for your job chances of you getting a spot in the academy are much higher due to prior experience. You can also start as a cop much sooner as opposed to active duty where you have to wait at least 4 years...meaning if you make a career out of the police force you can retire sooner....the only problem Ive noticed with the reserves.. (my wifes unit at least) is they are reluctant to pay you your money for drill....my wife had her 30 day OJT 3 months ago and still hasnt received her travel voucher which will be about 3000 bucks when she gets it....other then that the lifestyle is laid back and enjoyable for the most part

BTW... as far as I'm aware, none of the services will refuse to enlist you for having an arrest record. Actually from what I've experienced, they don't care even if you have a conviction for a misdemeanor. Now a conviction on a felony is a problem.

I'm not worried about enlisting
only thing my record might do is not make me a good candidate to be a city police officer right out of the gate, yes? that's my whole reasoning for going into the reserves

I think you can't have more than 2 or 4 misdemeanors to be considered for the services

I'm in the Marine Corps reserves, we have a few sailor boys in our unit, corpsman...they get my respect haha.

One thing about the reserves, is that if you dont have a full time job or school to do in between the 30 days that your drilling...you're SOL and broke. So I would talk to the police academy and tell them straight up what your plan is and ask them if that will help your chances of getting into the academy. Otherwise, you'll come outta boot camp and your MOS school...and if you dont get to become a cop...your effed.

what the Zoomie said about the advantage for you is true, dont do active duty if you dont want to be a full time sailor, just realize that you can get deployed and that is that. But you will be able to start your career as a police officer while in the reserves, heck..you might stay in the reserves 20 years, get a pension form them and the police force and be set for life

When I went through my MOS training the late 80's we had a couple of guys that were in their 40's going training. They were in better shape than some of the 18 year olds including me.

no prob Bob...just remember when you talk to the recruiter they may try and persuade you to go to another career field (probably wont be a problem with being a cop) but as long as you stick to your guns and tell them you want that job and only that job you're golden

the market, and people just plain don't think they need it
I'm not a very good salesman either, because when people say no to me, I get pissed off

plus I was competing with alot of other AFLAC agents, and they/AFLAC has pretty much saturated the market in this area, so whenever I would call someone, they'd already be contacted by 4 or 5 different agents, it was tough sledding
