Windows 7, the successor to the beleaguered Windows Vista, will be released on Oct. 22, Microsoft said Tuesday.
The personal computer operating system should be finished sometime in July, the company said, and will be sent to PC makers for testing and installation on their systems. Expect to see both retail computers with Windows 7 and boxed copies of the software starting on the October date.
Windows 7 has been in development since Vista was released for consumers in early 2007.
Microsoft said it planned to release the new operating system within three years of Vista’s release, and the October date means it will ship ahead of schedule.
Microsoft released two public test versions of Windows 7 this year — a beta version in January and a release candidate last month — that received high praise from reviewers.
In contrast, the finished version of Windows Vista met with lackluster reviews at best to outright scorn at worst.
Competitor Apple is also working on the next version of its computer operating system, Mac OS X 10.6, dubbed Snow Leopard.
Apple executives are expected to show off a nearly completed version of Snow Leopard during the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco next week.
Apple has not yet said when its new operating system will be available.

I run both Linux and Windows at work and at home. At Work I run Windows for support issues at home to run Windows only games. (though I don't play them much) I mainly use Ubuntu at home. At some point I probably will upgrade my dual boot to Win7 though it won't happen until SP1 at least I'm guessing. At work it probably just flat out won't happen for quite some time. I have no interest in upgrading our entire broker office infrastructure at this time. Anyhow, I'm sure some of our broker applications will fall flat on their face with Win7.

Leopard pisses me off, I hope Snow Leopard is better than it.
What's with Windows 7? They've only had 7 iterations of their OS?

I only paid $99 for Leopard whereas windows can cost up to $300. I wouldn't call it a premium.

Our company got windows XP pro with SP1 for under $10 when it was pretty new (just after SP1 came out).
I got it for free from our company. Same as Office and Symantic Corporate anti-virus and a few other programs:D

$600 for a slightly used 24" iMac. I got lucky. :D I had to install Windows Vista on it for one of my classes and I hate the constant "Allow or deny"..
