Beaver Crash - Lake Hood

This happened last weekend. Video was taken at Lake Hood, which is the largest float plane airport in the world.

I've flown in one of those planes. They have a reputation for being incredibly reliable and safe. That plane is credited with opening up the Canadian North, due to the a/n factors. I just remember that the plane was incredibly noisy (single radial engine) and that I had to help the pilot add oil in mid flight. Judgin by the video, it doesn't appear that the pilot generated enough airspeed to even consider taking off.

I do remember a few flights where the pilot was worried about weight. It would not surprise me if that plane was repaired and back in business in a few weeks. It's a tough plane that's been around for 60 years.

Yeah. I'm no pilot, but from what little I know about aviation, that looks like pilot error to me. I've seen thousands of pontoon style planes take off and land....and I've NEVER seen one try and take off with that little of a runway. Either that lake is tiny, and he had no business landing there in the first place, or that plane needed to be pointed in another direction.

He almost made it. If he wouldnt have let off the throttle about 150 feet from the shore, he would have. Why would you let off, only to re-engage it at the last second?
