The NFL needs to get ridda that stupid PI rule they made for 2004. If they dont then what they need to do is only allow the defense to have 9 players on the field and get ridda the CB position in the NFL. Make a rule that the defense cant cover WRs any more. No defender can be any closer then 10 yards to a WR.
Come on let the CBs play like they should. SOME of us like games where it is a close low scorin game with all defense. Paul Tagliabue needs to be FIRED as NFL commish. He SUCKS!!

I have no problem with a high scoring game as long as the offense EARNS its points. I'm tired of seeing a questionable PI call give an offense first and goal from the 1. Or giving an offense a first down on 3rd and 35 after throwing a 7 yard pass attempt. THAT is pathetic.

If the NFL is gonna keep this STUPID PI rule then they need to make the penalties on offense bigger.
False start - 10 yard penalty
Holding on the offense - 20 yards
Hands to the face on offense -15 yards
if there is offensive PI then they get the same penalty as if it were defensive PI.
So lets say we have offensive PI on a 50 yard pass on 2nd down an 5. Well then that means it is now 2nd down and 55 yards to go.
Intentional Grounding. Loss of down and add 10 yards to the penalty where the QB woulda been sacked.
Delay of game - 10 yards
Illegal blocks by the offense - 20 yards.
Also a new rule should be if a WR/TE or and receiver on a pass makes any contact with a defender after 5 yards it should be offensive PI.

If they penalize the offense that way, our team will be in the negative in most of our games.
You're right about the current PI penalty - that's just way too severe! I can see a 3rd & 35 and the defender commits the foul at 5 yards off LOS, should only be penalized at that spot, making it 3rd and 30.
This year, more than ever, these officials have really altered the momentum and lot of times, the outcome of the game with some very close and questionable calls.
Come on ref, let 'em play, for cripes sakes!!! :yousuck:

the problem is this. The referes are human they make mistakes adn the fans llove the high scoring affaris. ex. colts. Everybody amkes mistakes and offcials cant be counted on making ewvery call right. There will always be questionable calls.

Especially since it's the WR who is usually the one to initiate contact. I don't like the new interpretation of the rule. The babying of the WRs -- and also the QB, where it's getting like you can't even hit em anymore -- is turning some games into jokes.
I don't think Tags makes or changes the rules. Members of the owners and coaches do -- the rules committee. You sure like to fire people. :)

I agree, it is really getting pathetic. The WRs are already getting bigger and faster and with the crazy PI rules the poor DB does not stand a chance.

Blame fantasy football. The world is full of fantasy geeks who don't even watch the game and spend their time looking at spreadheets for player stats. The more the offenses score the more all those fantasy geeks have something to root for. The NFL has shifted it's emphasis from appeasing the gambler to appeasing the fantasy geek. Nobody wants to see his 'first round draft pick' at QB throw zero TDs, better if nobody is allowed to play defense and that same QB throws 4 TDs... then his 'owners' are all ecstatic. The fact is most of them won't even watch the game, but they want to see big numbers on the stat sheet.
It also has the added benefit of giving ESPN more highlights. The people who tune in to ESPN don't want to see a pass defended, that's for real fans, they want to see a game that looks like Madden 05. They want to see the ball flying all over the place.
Between that BS and free agency, the whole state of football sucks for real fans right now.

I agree with everyone in here. The "PI" rule has significantly changed the game for the worse. And it seems as if the refs "get off" on it too.
Refs definitely dictate the games. And if you're wearing a star on the side of your helmet and happen to be wearing silver and blue, you're definitely s*** out of luck.
Refs are definitely more flag happy this year than in year's past. And phantom calls are definitely more prevalent and fall into the new "PI" catagory.

Ok people....
There is no new rule!
All they did was issue a decree to the referees that need to actually call this penality this year. Pass interference and holding in the secondary are different infractions. They did not change the emphasis on pass interference. They changed the empahsis on holding in the secondary which is 5 yards and an automatic 1st down.
What really needs to be done is they need to keep the emphasis on down the field holding the way it is(If a player uses correct technique this penalty should never be called). And decrease the emphasis on pass interference when it comes to body contact on jump balls. That should even things out.

How about making pass interference a reviewable call?

It's sad to see some of the league's outstanding corners, Champ Baily in particular, being reduced to little more than just another DB.
It is a rare thing to see quality corner play anymore, thanks to the rules of contact and interference this league has so wisely opted to implement.
Utterly ridiculous.

I just think they should look at the contact and determine whether or not it hinders the wideout running his route. I have seen too many of these contact penalties called when there was nothing there.

IMO, This has been the worst season of officiating I have ever seen. I realize they are human, and usually things even out, but they have just been horrible this year.
The main reason why is it just seems game after game is severly impacted by ticky tack calls, and these calls have been in crucial situations way to much. Some we were actually a benefit off, but I still do not like it, or think it is good for the game.
It is not just the illegal contact emphasis either.
It is Illegal Contact, Pass Interference, but the one I hate the worst is how dang protective of the QB's they are.
They have straight up put skirts on them.
I understand protecting the QB, but they are so dang ticky tack about it, it just goes against Football IMO.
If you even hit their shoulder with your hand, they will call a hit to the head.
I do not know how many times I have seen a defender try to block the ball, and their hand barely comes down on their helmet, and it is 15 yards. Just to ticky tack.

The worst call for me is illegal contact on a receiver on the opposite side of the field from the throw. He is not even part of the play yet he gets the team a first down.
With respect to PI, maybe they should adopt the NCAA rule wherein it is a spot foul or fifteen yards whichever is less. That would stop the 50 yard pass deliberately underthrown to create interference.

I totally agree. The worst being when it is 3rd and 35 and an incidental contact away from the play gives the offense a first down. Tags has to see that this is not good for the game. When the defense kicks arse only to give up a cheap first down it becomes deflating and ultimately this trend cheapens the game.

As Parcells has stated, this is the reason why you don't need a "shutdown" corner in the NFL anymore. They are not worth high draft picks. On the flip side, do you also need a worldbeater WR? Not really.
If you do not want to get burned for PIs, put pressure on the QB to keep him from throwing the ball.
It would not surprise me if we draft DE and DT in the first round. No shutdown corner, no QB, no WR, blah, blah, blah. Again, worldbeaters are not required at those positions.
We haven't had a pass rusher on this team since the last millenium. A pass rush would make our secondary look much better, even with Frazier back there.
