What do you think?
I once had a Psychology professor tell me that it was Layla by Eric Clapton, absolutely not the acoustic version.

Personally, I don't know. There are so many good songs that I have heard and probably so many that I haven't heard that I don't think its possible to make a clear cut choice.

two of my favourites at the moment
firstly although i would class the band as rock and roll i think the songs more pop but that might just because it has permeated popular culture so much, well in this country i don't know about the states. either way i don't think its possible to listen to this song and not be cheered up.
98P-gu_vMRc
and for some reason i've found myself absolutely loving this song the last few weeks.

both songs from long before i was born by the way.
might as well throw in a classic from my generation

1) Satisfaction by the Stones is THE rock n' roll song of all-time.
Keith Richards tells about the night he first played the legendary chords to open the song. He was tired/stoned/drunk one night and was playing around on the guitar and played those chords. It was a good thing he recorded the practice because he fell asleep/passed out and didn't remember a thing the next morning. He listened to the recording and remembered.
Keith also talked about how he thought he would be sued for plagiarizing the chords from the song Dancing in the Streets (I think).
2) Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Good.
3) Bad Company's Shooting Star

Gimme Shelter is the only Stones song that I really like. I love the Stones and I'd have to put that as their best song. But as far as best 'rock' song (so in another words, the song that I feel sums up rock more than any other) I'd have to go with Jumping Jack Flash.

Just so many great songs that it is hard to narrow it down to one.
I mean the idea of just the Beatles and Stones songs alone makes it hard to narrow it down to one among them.
With that said I will pick one from each and although arguments can be made for others, I just happen to like these two for whatever reason.
Strawberry Fields Forever

I'll give you Master of Puppets (definitely best album) as a possibility, and maybe throw in And Justice For All as another debatable one, but not the others, and throwing anything post the black album on there is just crazy talk.

No they don't.
Frankenstein by Edgar Winters group is one of the greats.
Eruption by Van Halen is one of the greats.
Some of the great surfing from dickie dale, venturas and other bands of that ilk...songs are instrumentals.
Star Spangled Banner played by Jimi Hendrix
Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs
XYZ and La Villa Strangiato by Rush
Dee By Randy Rhodes
Jessica by the Allman Brothers band
A number of songs from Jeff Beck
Personally I think Joe Satriani is better known for Surfing with the Alien and I also like a few of his other songs better than the one posted...but to each his own.

I too like Surfing With The Alien. From the perspective of Satriani and his ability to just play, that's probably a better piece. I like the arangement with the acoustic guitar and the keyboards better in Always With Me, Always With You. It flows better for me and I just like it. However, I don't play so I probably don't have the same kind of appriciation for the technically harder pieces the way you probably do Brain.
Here's Surfing With The Alien for those who may not know it.

That's a great tune Brain. I agree, they had a really distinct sound. A vocalist in Brad Delp, a great drummer with Sib Hashian but what really made that band go was Sholz, the lead Guitarist. He had a sound in mind that he perfected using Rockman and multiple guitar riffs combined into a unique sound. Great band to me. Really like Boston.

Yeah................I've heard, I believe, every version of this song ever recorded. The song itself is great, and put it Beck's hands and forget it. He does it so good that I even don't mind Rod Stewart singing the lyrics.
The only down-side to the Beck version is that it's too short. I wish he would've done more like a ten minute anthem-type thing.

Jeff Beck has always seemed so underrated when talking about guitar greats.
I don't know if he's underrated as much as it is that he's never pushed for THAT side of things. He's one of those guys who doesn't care much for the lime-light, and could care less how he's measured up against other guitar players. He's that good...............
He doesn't need Rolling Stone's validation or Billboards recognition for him to measure his own talent. He's not arrogant or cocky, he just knows who he is and what he does, and that's enough for him. He's in it for the music first and foremost, and however the chips fall after that, I don't think he really cares a rats butt.
Mark Knopfler, the point man for Dire Straits is like that too. Ironically, both Beck and Knopfler are arguably the two best "finger" guys of their generation. No picks, all finger play...............bloody fingers and fingertips like leather and all.
