View Full Version : Our Defense came to play today!
VT and the offense laid an egg. VT two interceptions and Jones in check 25-80. Seven points scored.
Ellis - he's the least of our problems - guy on pace for 10 sack season. 6-6 - 270 DE rounding into All Pro form.
We forced TURNOVERS - Roy, Tnew made plays. Linebackers made a lot of tackles and kept Eagles for the most part at bay and off the scorebaord.
Anyone see that series in 3rd? We stuffed a play in 3-4 (Thornton OUT THERE), went 3-4 , they called Timeout. Stayed 3-4 and blitzed the house. McNabb panicked and threw the pick to Roy. That series epitomized everything I advocate past year -
I hope for more of that - as we rebuild and upgrade D.
TNEW was the man - was all over the Philly receivers.

I think that play was less a 3-4 and more a 7-0. Everyone was on the line

Great, then they dissapeared when they needed to make a stop. Awesome, the Doomsday defense is back.
btw, who would have thought that this thread would be about the 3-4?

We just can't put a complete game together with the O and D firing on all cylinders. We scored one TD which started deep in Eagles territory to begin with. JJ was getting swallowed by the Eagles frontline and LB's before he could touch the ball. Vinny, as usual, made pitiful throws that were rarely on the mark.
Bright spots on offense: JJ will become a Travis Henry-like back for us. Al Johnson is solid in the middle. Witten is having a Pro Bowl caliber season. Allen, though slowing down, is still playing at a high level.
We just couldn't move the ball downfield today. We were lucky we didn't lose by more.
I think it's time the students overran the bus driver.

It slowly went from Defense being the problem, to Offense being the problem.

There were 3 down - thats the brilliance of the 3-4. You can move the up men all around and actually cause an offense "issues". Play before they flooded a side and caused a Philly timeout.
No matter how you dice it nice aggressive scheme. Thornton had a nice game - 53 all over the field in limited play.

It shows that it works well in short times. What, you think we're going to get a turnover every series if we go to the 3-4? It worked well because the Eagles probably didn't focus a lot of time in practice against the 3-4.

as much heat as you take for it Nors, I do agree with you on the 3-4. Just only when we get the parts for it, and not before.

Al Johnson had a penalty a blown assignment and was blown by on a couple of plays, now compared to the guy next to him (Gurode) he looked like a pro bowler.
But I still don't think he played that well today.

I was glad to see Newman and Roy step up today, even if it's to late in the year to make a difference. Newman looked a lot like what we drafted last year, and Roy was hitting and making a few plays. Defense was very good until the last drive, but if our offense would have came to play today the last drive wouldn't have mattered.

I wouldn't get too excited about this defensive performance...when the Eagles needed to score, it was if they simply flipped a switch..
I'd have been more impressed with the defense if they played a mediocre game but put together a last stand that stopped the Eagles from scoring...

Why we are a 5-9 team.
Bad defense and offense overall. Today our D played very well. Can't state that?

Anyone that actually read what I advocated past offseason was a 3-4 capability off base 4-3 defense THIS year - 15% 3-4 looks.
It baffled and confused McSoup, He was forced to call a time out and then made a poor throw as we caused pressure fron the up backers - Result was a Nice interception.
Our 4-3, Ellis, Tnew also had a very solid game.

Teams are stacking for the run against us because they know Vinny can't win the game if it simply rests on his shoulders.
Any hint of pressure and he panics. He forces throws into double and triple coverage. I just don't see how Bill is blinded by that. Heck put a Rookie in if our veteran is going to play like one.
I think Bill has a way of manipulating Jerry into getting his way. I am not saying that is Bad. But if Bill wasn't the coach here I couldn't see Jerry bringing in Vinny to play QB for us.

what really struck me about this game was how everybody in coverage for dallas actually TURNED THEIR HEADS ON THE BALL in coverage. it was the most technique i've seen outta them all season.

We haven't had any fourth quarter mojo all year. In fact it's been the opposite. We find ways to lose in the fourth like the fumble against the steelers. He may have not been the answer (though his record was pretty good with the jets) but at least Quincy did some positive things in the fourth. We need some players like that who step up when their needed. Haley used to be great at getting that pressure or sack when it was really needed. He would set his man up all game kind of like a pitcher and then do something different when it counted.
