View Full Version : Question on promotion at work

Hi guys...

I just interviewed with my boss for a promotion at work (to a position that's now open because the person who had it was fired recently)

all signs from him point to me getting the job (with his blessing), however, I was just asked by HR (who were asked by our GM) to give a transcript of my undergrad classes

Here's where the problem is... my grades weren't so hot in the beginning of undergrad (typical freshman/sophomore slump) but I righted the ship towards the end enough to get around a 3.0 GPA. Also, I've taken a year of grad school classes (MBA) and I have a 4.0 GPA so far

is it typical for a GM to look at undergrad grades for a promotion candidate even though I've got a 4.0 in grad school and have been at this job for over a year and was obviously initially hired with those grades?

I would think so. I'm busting my butt right now to get two B's so I don't get below a 3.0.

Maybe you need some TP.

They might just want to verify that you have a bachelors degree. You'd be surprised at the number of people that get professional jobs by lying about their education.

Photoshop it and give yourself a 5.0!

They will be impressed.

This is my guess as well. I'd think they are more interested in A: The fact that you attended and graduated from where you say you did. and B: that you studied in a relevant field. They are not looking for straight A's.

I was a GM of a software company for the last 5 yrs. I never asked or was asked by the supervisor of a potential promotion candidate for their school records. Promotions are given by merit not accomplishments....meaning your performance in your current position is usually the sole consideration in a promotion.

Yep - it's been my experience that most requests for transcripts come at the time of HIRE, not promotion. Either way, as long as you have them, you should be good to go (as long as you're not a big fat liar).

Like the other folks, this is not very typical. I have never asked our HR Department to get that info after an original hire. Don't they already have it on file anyway? Why can't they just request it from Human Resources?

it was a very stupid thing to get mad about looking back on it...

it wasn't so much what had happened... it's just that it happened in front of a co-worker that I don't like and I hated that it made me look bad in front of them hahah...

anyway,... Wraith - Promoted!!

Good job on the promotion.

You know, it's funny, I stressed so much about my grades when I was in college, and in the past 15 years, not a single employer bothered to look at them once. :laugh2:

I just hired three interns this summer and it didn't even occur to me to look at their transcripts. Probably should have, but it didn't.
