Do Internet Providers have a monopoly over certain areas? For instance, if Verizon is the only Internet Service available in my area, does that prevent AT&T from offering service in my area.

I wish I could go back to AT&T Uverse.

Not here it doesn't. I had AT&T for years then I switch to Time Warner.

You should be able to get any service you want.

Depends on your location. Usually it isn't the case, but in some places it is. (like mine, I'm stuck with Cablevision's Internet)

My area is either Suddenlink (which I have and am happy with) or one of the sats. That or dial ups.

I know you can't get Uverse, but you should be able to get ATT's DSL package w/the wireless gateway..

and a separate package for DISH Network if you like them.

That's what both my Dad and brother did cuz they had the same problem when they moved.

I will stick with FIOS, at least the speed is extremely better than Uverse.

However, not being able to open up port 3389 for Remote Desktop, not to mention port 80 really bothers me.

There customer support is horrible as well. I just got off the phone with their "premium" tech support and we logged onto my PC to look at my router and I knew more about Networking then the tech did. However, he did say that my port forward settings were correct.

I just got Uverse installed a week or two ago and talked to the install guy at length. When I asked him about the service being available in some parts of my area and not others he gave me a reasonable explanation. He said AT&T's philosophy was to wire in all the apartment complexes in an area first then expand into the surrounding neighborhoods.

Dang.

Murphy, Tx is a bedroom community and has very few apartments (heck, im not sure they have any).

Besides the occassional channel freeze, Uverse is sweet!!

Verizon Fios is sweet too, but their router seems to be crap and their customer service is even worse.

no, but Verizon is taking alot of Comcast customers

it's just a plain better, faster, better picture, more content service

apparently with Verizon FIOS tv, you can keep track of your Fantasy Football team, your Facebook status, and see who's twittering (if you're into that thing)

AT&T U-verse is still relatively young and from what I understand its pretty costly to roll it out to new areas, so it just takes time. Same with other providers. It's a cost-benefit decision like anything else -- they have to determine whether they can get enough customers to warrant rolling out into your area.

And like Duane said it's easier for them to go to apartments first. Since it's FTTN rather than FTTH, they can get a lot more customers from an apartment using only a single node.
