View Full Version : For Arguements Sake

Just for the sake of arguement, what if:
Henson has show in practice he has some very raw skills, stong arm etc.
But, Irvin is correct with what he has heard from the players who have seen him in practice. That he is not ready.
That he still has not picked up the offense, he is not making good decisions, does not read the field well, does not know what to do on blitzs, has bad mechanics etc.
Do we blow our wad on free agency this year and bring in enough players that allows us to have a very solid D and a O that can run the ball effectively and reduce his role to 15 to 20 passes a game and play him next year to find out what kind of QB he can be.
Or did we bring in a guy like Hassleback (who will not be cheap) and will cost us cap space in other areas, and have Henson ride the pine another year?
This is the problem we face and unfortunately we probably have to make this choice before we really know what we have in Henson.
I know this is why some have flipped out about him not playing this year. But that is water under the bridge at this point. It's more about what do you do now?

I think it could entirely depend oin who the HC is. If Parcells stays, like I think he will, I suspect we will sign either Johnson or Hassleback and make a run at the playoffs next year. If we change coaches I suspect we see either a 1 year FA or either Henson or Romo starting next year.

I would guess that we don't spend big bucks on a QB next year.
I think we'll end up with a proven veteran like B. Johnson or Warner, etc. while Henson and/or Romo develops.
Instead, I think we'll spend the money to improve the defense and add a player or two on the OL.

You know, you can do pretty well in this league with a SOLID defense and a real running game . . . . That's probably enough to get you to around 8-8.
If you add good ST play, that could be worth another win (or two).

So that potentially means sitting him again?
Boy I can already see the threads next year, but I think I have to agree.
We could be ok with a efficient QB, this Hassleback thing might turn out to be a option depending on what happens with Seattle the rest of the year. Their coach may be gone.

Parcells has repeatedly brought up how important it is that a young QB have a good team around him. He keeps using Big Ben in Pittsburg as an example of what an inexperienced QB can do with a good supporting cast.
Based on that line of thinking, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see Henson and Romo return with only a stopgap QB brought in to "drive the bus" Ole' Bill is building. I could see all our resources going into DL, OL, WR and LB.
Not saying that's what I think should happen... just what very well could given Parcells recent comments.
If that's what happens... I could live with it.

Well, a veteran like Brad Johnson or Warner could start the season, and BP could ease Henson/Romo to the starting position if he believes that either of the young guys could handle the blitzes, etc.
I'm not holding my breath on Hasselback.
But BP did say that there was better than average chance that either Romo or Henson is the starting QB next season.
Of course, a lot can happen between now and then. But from what BP is saying in press conferences, etc. he's talking about providing the pieces for a young QB to do well, not going out and paying or drafting big bucks to get a new QB. I beleive he alluded to Ben Roths. and the success he's having, while some other young QBs aren't having the same success. He was implying that depends on the other players around the QB - i.e., Pitts. has the number 1 ranked defense, super running game, very good WRs, etc.

I can see going that route, meaning spending all the dollars on D and a few key additions on O, like Guard.
I guess this train of thought only works though, if Henson or Romo have the abilities (physically and mentally) to drive the bus next year.
At this point I am wondering if BP believes either one can get their license by next year.

I can only guess that BP suggested this route because he does, in fact, believe that it is possible with either Henson or Romo.
If BP managed to get to the playoffs with QC at the helm and a crap running game (Hambrick) and a sold defense, maybe he thinks he can do the same with either Henson/Romo, a good running game, and a solid defense?

He very well may be thinking this way, but at least with QC, the guy had some playing experience coming into the year.
It's not going to be a easy ride since neither one of these guys does. I don't see a guy going to NFLE and coming back and starting the next year either.
You can look at a guy like Carson, who has a lot better pedigree then Romo and a lot more experience then Henson and it has taken him most of the year to look like a real QB.
I guess you can say he didn'tt have as much to work with as we might if we spent our wad and brought in a lot of guys. But then again he had 2 pretty good WR's and a hell of a running game.

What you do now...and should have been doing the last several games is play the young QB you think could be a franchise QB....or at least one of the young guys.
Vinny flat out has lost the last two games...two critical pics last game.
Either Drew or Tony need to play here on out with Vinny being inactive...period! This is becoming a joke...Vinny gives us the best chance to lose...without a doubt.

There is nothing that can be done about that now, the question is what do we do going forward if Henson or Romo are not ready to shoulder the responsibility to win games.

Yes, but Cinn. defense isn't dominant.
That's what saved us last season.

With only two games left...we will go into next year with the same questions we've had since Troy left...unless of course Drew lights it up for two games...but if he does not play...can not happen. Even if he does he will indeed struggle....still with a lingering ???

It's amazing how much better the D has looked now that we have a running game, that allows us to keep the D off the field for long stretches.
I will never understand why we went completely away from it in the second half, I think I heard the stat of Jones getting 7 rushes in the second half in a close game.
Go figure!

I think that's what Bill was driving at in his PCs last week. I'm sure I'll get flamed, but I could even see Vinny coming back next year. Before you do--I'M NOT SAYING AS A STARTER! Think of San Diego--no one is yelling about how stupid they are to have Flutie, & he's even older than Vinny. He's there as a mentor & backup. I could see Vinny coming back in the same capacity--as #2 or even #3 to continue working with Henson/Romo (he apparently works quite heavily with Romo on breaking down film). That way, they focus on getting more o-line & d-line guys to put around either Henson/Romo & have Vinny as insurance. If not Vinny, then some other vet QB (personally, I'd love to get Hasselbeck).
