“You can think what ever you want to about Fidel Castro, but he was one of the brightest leaders I have ever met”
“the Cuban revolution that kicked out the wealthy, Che Guavera did that, and then after they took over they went out among the population to find someone who can lead this new nation, and they found… well just leave it there. An attorney by the name of Fidel Castro.”
These were the words of Diane Watson, Democrat Congresswoman for California. And you wonder why we call them the Looney left? Fidel Castro one of the brightest leaders she has ever met? What planet she lives on? Perhaps she can explain to me why Cubans are willing to risk their lives crossing the shark infested, cold waters between Cuba and Florida to get to the US. Fidel, a dictator who locks up or kills his political rivals, who uses the military as his personal bodyguards, who keeps his people in poverty. Oh, but the horrible USA is the one keeping the Cubans poor, that’s what many would say. As if Cuba can’t and doesn’t do business with other countries.
I don’t know about you, but praising Fidel Castro as a bright leader is not only offensive to most Cubans here in the US but is by far the dumbest thing any Democrat could say. Now I do everything within my power to not call people names (browshirts, swastika carriers, unAmerican, stupid, ignorant, crazy, etc.), but this time I can’t think of anything else better to say. These are the people you voted in to take care of this country, people who praise dictators, who defend terrorist, who attack and insult their own countrymen, who want to prosecute their own employees, who claim to fight for the rights of the poor but in reality are more concerned with their jobs and would rather step back than stick to their words.
If these are the kind of people you want running the country the you are a Loon, you are crazy and most of all, you are stupid. Better yet, listen for yourself just how stupid they sound.

Not hard to be impressed with a communist leader when that is what you would like to see happen here.

hate to say this. But idiots don't usually stay in power for decades. Even dictators that are dumb find a way to get overthrown.
There is such a thing as "bright" for all the wrong reasons. Think of the evil and/or bad leaders through history. Most weren't stupid. They just had poor idiology, morals, and ethics.

Yeah that is why the people of N. Korea have been starving for years and trying to escape N. Korea under the leadership of Kim Jong Il and his father before him. As for Cuba people there too have looked to escape does Miami ring a bell?

Great reasoning. Because their people are struggling? Dictators don't care about their own people. They care about themselves. If they are able to stay in power. Then they aren't flat out stupid.
Stupid people can be brought down easily.
Is Castro isn't/wasn't bright. Then I would be afraid to see what a smart dictator looks like.

Castro like other dictators used intimidation and violence to any and all who oppose them. If that is what you consider bright then I feel bad for you. Saddam held power for a very long time not because he was smart he would kill or imprison anyone who dare challenge him. Castro has done the same and that does not take a great intelligence only an iron fist.

yes you would. please keep in mind as you are going off your American values, programming works on the brain. Im not saying all Cubans are brain washed, and im not saying either way works or doesnt. You have a lot of Cubans who are happy there and you have some who are dreamers and see what America has, and you have some who want better for their lives. The bottom line tho Castro = dictator.

Guess its all how you judge intelligence.
Castro to me, is all about holding onto power. His dinky island off of our country has basically been flicking off admins of both parties for decades now.
Is he the BRIGHTEST? I doubt it. Is he probably a very smart person who happens to be a POS? I think so. I don't know if Watson looked into his eyes and get a sense of his soul. I doubt that much.

I did not say he was stupid however Rep Watson called him "the brightest leader she has met." I don't think Castro is all that bright that does not make him stupid. As far as remaining in power he like all other dictators do so by strong arm tactics of killing off all those who oppose them and even intimidate their own inner circle who fear for their own lives as well as the lives of their family. That does not take great intelligence to do that and while he is not stupid that damn sure does not make him very bright

I don't know, go ask the million people in American prisons right now for doing time for kidnapping, torture, murder, rape, and ask them why they aren't heads of state.
My guess would be its because they aren't smart enough.

It does indeed make you bright. Look at Saddam. The first thing he did was get rid of every person in high ranking military posts. He surrounded himself with family only. Why? Because the chances of him being overthrown and murdered were much less likely if you only surround yourself with family members. This was not a stupid man. A nutjob by our standards? Yes. But not stupid.
And your argument on that it doesn't take a smart person to hold a gun to someones head and scare the hell out of the people isn't true. These people GAINED POWER originally because they were smart. They got their way into power, and the fear and intelligence they used sustained them in power.
The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Your version of someone being bright and mine then are just different. Yes Saddam surrounded himself with family he also killed them if he felt they were becoming a threat that does not take intelligence. If you think these guys are great mind be my guest I don't think much of them or their intelligence.

So why are they risking their lives to come to america? You never seen the story about the Cuban pitcher that defected to cuba so he can come to America. it's really easy to talk about the CUban life but try living their. **** is hell Castro is a ******* and you're just helping them be oppressed.

Why would anyone want to visit a country where the people are trying to get off and risking their lives.

Lame, as usual. It just dawned on me that the only people you have sympathy for in Cuba are the terrorists at Gitmo. Quite a rich life you're leading.
I can't do anything about them so I won't lose sleep over it.
People leave countries all the time for many reasons. Draft dodgers left the US because they saw their freedom NOT to fight being trounded on. People leave Cuba too. People moving has been going on for millions of years.

No, it only serves to enrich their jailers and prolong their misery. Remind me again why the world imposed sanctions on South Africa?

Who said anything about Reagan? The fact is that the global Left enthusiastically supported punitive actions against de Klerk, yet turn a blind eye to Castro's serial atrocities. You think racism is worse than communism or something?

So because I don't agree with their policies, I can't visit? I'm glad the rest of the world doesn't share your views, or from 2000-2008, the US would have had about 4 tourists.
Do me a favor....walk around your entire house, and write me a list of everything you own that was made in China. It should take you about a day.
Then come back here and list them all so we can all tell you that you are a communist, and how you support thier oppresive regime because of the stuff you buy.
See how that works? Thanks for playing.

If I go on vacation anywhere in the world, and spend $1000, who do you think will benefit the most from that money? Monte Carlo, Vegas, the South of France, Hawaii, Germany, London, or Cuba.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say, the poorest of those places.
But go ahead and keep them poor and spend your money in Vegas. Remember, its all about your needs.

Buying a t-shirt made in China is not nearly as offensive or damaging than going out of your way to vacation there. Keep telling yourself that your narcissism and dollars are helping the locals, because I really need the laugh. And it goes without saying that you can avoid Cuban products a lot easier than the rest of us can avoid Chinese exports.

I'm going to assume you were joking, because nobody could be this stupid. Soviet communism was the most murderous system ever devised by man, and Chinese communism (which is still in business, btw) the second most murderous. South Africa, for all its injustices, does not begin to compare.

The two worst mass murderers of all time were Stalin and Mao. Communists.
Stalin killed anywhere from 30-70 million of his own people. Mao - no one knows- I have seen numbers from 30 million to as high as 100 million. No one knows but the curtural revolution and the purges were horrendous. As regards Stalin the collectivization of the farms in the late 20's early 30's killed anywhere from 5-15 million; his purges in the late 30's another 5 million or so; and the political prisoners used as cannon fodder (without weapons marched into german mine fields and MGs - that is execution anyway you want to look at it) another 5-10 million. Not to mention the steady executions and deaths in gulags all the time.
Show me any racist regime anywhere that came even in the same galaxy for suffering and death as compared to communism.

If only the US had bought Cuban sugar,,,,
I think though even the most ardent right winger here has to admit that there is no logical reason to keep the embargo going. Cuba isn't a threat to anyone.
I have no opinion one way or the other re Cuba. I do know though that there are many people who like to holiday there because there are no Americans. I've never been to Cuba so I don't know if that is a bonus or not ;)
Nothing like propping up a dictator........oh wait....never mind

Buying a T shirt thats made in china isn't very damaging (which I agree)
But buying a T shirt in Cuba is very damaging? (which I disagree)

You forgot "offensive." Would you go down to a homeless shelter and eat a four-course meal in front of a destitute family? Would you stay at a bed-and-breakfast run by white supremacists? Where exactly would you draw the line? Nowhere?

No. But If I went there and ate, I'd make sure I brought along some food for others. Which is exactly my point. I can't believe you've missed it this long. They will benefit from me spending money there. Why is that so hard for you to understand? So the people have a crappy govt. That doesn't mean they are subhuman, and shouldn't be helped. If I go there, and drop a thousand on trinkets, food, or Tshirts, then .....and follow me here........THEY'VE PROFITED OFF OF ME......and hopefully it can add some money to thier pockets. Damn BB, I know you are not this dense.

1. If you don't see the difference in staying at a bed and breakfast run by the KKK, and going to Cuba, and sharing a few bucks with the locals, than you have brain damage. You could compare staying at the B&B with staying at Castro's house if he invited you. But not going to see the sights of Cuba, and spending a few bucks.
2. What kind of thread count are in the sheets?

If Congresswoman Watson had used the word "intelligent", I think people would be far more forgiving of and even symphathetic to her viewpoint. But the word "bright" has a certain positive connotation that should not be attached to a man such as Castro.
