WOW, talk about your over optimistic coach. This from the article:

"We're excited about Fred because we think he's in good shape," Gibbs said. "Last night we were concerned when he went to the hospital. He has a bruise there of his kidney, but [team doctors] actually haven't ruled him out playing this week. So we'll see."

He's excited and he's in good shape. I don't know but I don't think I could get excited and be optimistic after my top DB just spent the night in another towns hospital becasue of a kidney problem. But hey, that's just me.

I said before the season starts, I really don't think Portis can endure the carries Gibbs expects from a running back.

I say within three years, he'll be beat down if the Skins don't get a running back to share carries with him.

i saw lynn scott give him a shot to the ribs that took him out the game. hes simply not built for between the tackles running, a staple of the gibbs offense.

You're just still smarting from that tongue-lashing and avatar they gave you at extremeskins. Remember, say it slowly with me now, just because one poster offends you does not mean you lash out wildly at the entire board. ;)

I agree:(....it's funny how betts always jump starts the offense when he gets more than 5 carries......

here's his chance......I think well draft a big back in the later rds though....

How many carries does portis have.....isn't it close to like 350?!?!? Thats too much for the little guy......I feel bad for him because he can't say, " I can't do it coach.".......I hope he lasts more than 3 years but I don't see it happening..... :(

Wow...the guy has run tough all year long, much tougher than I thought he was...he was knocking at 1500 yards again this season, and he gets injured ribs and will miss the final game of the season, a meaningless game i might add, and suddenly you guys don't think he's the right RB....wow...you guys are hard to satisfy.

I'll tell you what....I love what I've seen from Julius Jones, but I'll trade you Jones, George, and Lee straight up for Clinton Portis today....

Clinton was set to become the first back in history to run for 1,500 yards in his first 3 seasons. Most likely would have made it had he not got hurt.

He is tougher then I thought he was. He is a great back but not worth the kind of money they are paying him

Sorry, but Clinton's attitude toward the game and his need to "look sweet" while playing the game is enough for me. The Deadskins can keep him.

I'm fine with Julius. Just wait till next season. :starhat:

I'm in the 700 club!

You kidding me? Portis isn't the world beater he was in denver(just like almost any other denver rb). JJ is stronger than him, just as fast and has a much better attitude.

i didnt say he was a good back, i said hes not a between the tackles runner. hes a slasher - run off tackle and cut back type and gibbs offense with the exception of the counter trey is for a between the tackles type runner. didnt say he couldnt do it, simply said he wont last under the punishment from that type of running. and thats almost 1500 at about 3.5 a clip. i seem to recall much ado being made about ypc under 4 for emmitts last years and george this year.

not comparing the backs but simply saying enough attempts and you will amass yardage.

Here’s the amount of carries and receptions Portis had in his first two seasons:

Carries + Receptions = Total Touches

273 + 33 = 306

290 + 38 = 328

Note that in his second season he wound up playing in 13 of the Broncos’ 17 games (he missed their playoff game).

Now look onto this season:

343 + 40 = 383

If Portis wasn’t injured last season and this season, he was on pace to have about the same amount of touches (404 in 2003 and 408 in 2004). But remember, he only had 7 touches against Pittsburgh and on top of all of that, his running and passing numbers were WORSE playing with Ramsey than they were with Brunnell.

WITH BRUNNELL

204 carries, 805 yards, 3.95 yards per carry.

24 catches, 151 yards, 6.29 yards per catch

WITH RAMSEY

139 carries, 505 yards, 3.63 yards per carry

16 catches, 84 yards, 5.25 yards per catch

Not only that, but Portis faced much tougher defenses in the NFC East this year than he did in the AFC West last year. Here is how the Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles are currently ranked in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per carry:

Dallas T15th
New York T18th
Philly T18th

Here is how the Chargers, Raiders, and Chiefs ranked in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per carry LAST YEAR:

Chargers 20th
Raiders 25th
Chiefs 32nd

It *appears* that Portis can only handle about 20 touches a game instead of 25 touches a game. And even that may be too much as Portis has yet to make it to the playoffs were he could quite possibly wear down by the Championship Game if he was on a team that could go that far.
