View Full Version : Meet the $90,000 Mustang

Doomsday101

A typical Ford Mustang GT costs about $30,000. Now a custom carmaker is transforming 45 of those regular Mustangs into $90,000 hand-built Iacocca Edition Mustangs.
Galpin Motors, the Los Angeles dealership selling these cars, is well known for custom cars. This model aims to commemorate the role legendary auto executive Lee Iacocca played in creating the original Mustang in 1964.

For three times the cost of a regular V8 Mustang, the Iacocca Mustang is equipped with a 4.6-liter 300-horsepower engine, just like a stock 2009 Mustang GT, but with Ford's Racing Handling suspension package. Performance options include a Ford Racing brake upgrade, a Cold Air Kit that boosts horsepower to 320 and a supercharger that boosts horsepower to 400.

"The majority have sold with the supercharger and brake upgrades," said Terry Miller Galpin general sales manager.

With those options, the price rises to $105,000.

But this car really isn't about raw performance. In this case, the price has much more to do with exclusivity and style than just smoking the tires. Only 45 of the cars will be made and it takes a long time to make them.

Not everyone is convinced these cars are worth the money but, then again, fewer than four dozen people will need convincing.

I agree with the first part, but the second still doesn't make sense. I could buy the same stock mustang, put a series of parts on it that only I choose, and there would probably still only be a handful of them just like mine in the world.

I'd have 600 horsepower and still pocket 50 grand.

Just because its rare, doesn't mean its valuable.

Not exactly true if you ever watch the car auction of classic car models that were produces in limited quantity cost. It is not about the horse power hell for that type of cash there are other options out there and while you can add part to make yours special but these car will have special markings and registered to show that the car the person bought is one of 45. The buyers are not avg wage earners by any means. I would add the buyer of these cars likely will never have them on the streets to begin with. Yes Rare makes it valuable not saying I would buy it then again I don’t have that type of cash

Hell, for around 60 grand, the folks at Hennessey will build you a supercharged 2010 Camaro SS that puts out around 560 HP and will eat the Mustang being discussed here for breakfast...

We're talking 4.1 seconds to go from 0-60, 12.1 seconds in the quarter mile at 119 MPH... on street tires...

http://www.hennesseyperformance.com/hennesseyperformance/ItemDetail.php?Item_ID=363&cart=kyACiAIe&DoThis=Chevrolet+Camaro+%282010%29&ActionReq=Where

For 110 grand, you can upgrade to the HPE700, which puts out 705 HP... it also adds and adjustable coil-over suspension, and Corvette Z06 carbon brakes...

There will only be 24 of them built, 11 have already been sold...

http://www.hennesseyperformance.com/hennesseyperformance/ItemDetail.php?Item_ID=363&cart=kyACiAIe&DoThis=Chevrolet+Camaro+%282010%29&ActionReq=Where

They also have 800 HP and 1000 HP twin turbo versions on the drawing board...

LOL. Yeah. I know ALL about classic cars dude. Trust me. That's my car in my avatar. But there is WAY more to it than a car just being rare. Especially when your talking about a brand new car that another company is buying and tweaking. Trust me, in 10 years that mustang will fetch about 10 grand more than what a regular 2009 mustang will bring in.

The Z06 is a helluva ride. If you've driven one, you know why. Incredible, mind boggling power, and it handles like a dream.

The mustang........not so much. As an investment, the Z06 will hold its value much more than the mustang as well.

I'm not a big car person. I have a few old muscle cars that I hold special, but there are very few high end cars that I really like. If I had a choice that someone would give me one for free (I would never spend that much money on a car) I would take the Ford GT. I'm not fully clear why I want one, but I saw one (red with white stripe, like in the pic below) driving down Greenwich Ave in Greenwich, CT. Since then, that is the only car I would want that cost in excess of $100k

the newer GT is crap, the engine is a pos. now if you could get one from the 60's (believe it was the 60's) when it was tearing up the leman's race series then hell yeah i'd jump on that. thats a beast of a car

Eh? The Ford GT (550HP, 0-60 3.3 sec, 0-100 7.4 sec, top speed of only 205mph because it IS electronically limited) is the fastest production American car on the planet. It blows the doors off of Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo. It will take out the Corvette Z06 (505HP) in the 1/4 mile AND at top end speed. You are also aware that todays Ford GT40 (also 205-207mph) was a straight line long distance speed demon. The new Ford GT is a super sports car meant to be driven. That can't be side about the GT40.

btw, they say without being electronically limited in speed, the Ford GT would probably approach 230mph. Hell on wheels! :laugh2:

That's not the Z06 with the 505 hp.

You would be wrong.

Just so you know. The Corvette Z06 (all Z06) have 505HP, 0-60 in 3.7 sec, 0-100 in 7.9 secs, is electronically limited to 198mph and can reach a absolute top speed of 206mph with the speed governor removed. I posted the stats of the Ford GT above. It can match everything the Z06 has to offer with its governor in place and blow it's doors off without it pacing around 230mph with the governor removed! As noted, faster top speed AND faster 1/4 mile. What you heard was Chevy lovers / Ford haters. (Ford has A LOT of haters out there)

The only way a Z06 beats the Ford GT is if the Ford remains stock & regulated AND the Z06 is modified.

When Ford recreated the GT, its point was to not only create the fastest production American car, but to also compete for being the best all around high end *production* super sports car.

I agree, but if I were to get one. I think I would go with an original Shelby GT500. Though the 2010 Shelby GT500 looks like a real beast. Ford definitely refined it from the 2009 model. At around $46K looks like a far better deal than spending $90k on what these guys are offering. Gotta love the 510hp and multiple modes of operation. It's a true return to muscle cars era. Not just super sports cars like Ferrari, Porche, Lamborgini, Viper, Ford GT, and the like.

It's like saying, I love my GMC Sierra, but those Chevy Silverado's are crap. Same vehicle. Yes, but Firebirds had the Firebird on the hood. Much, much cooler! :) I loved the '79 Firebird...with it's 400 engine and it's 3 miles a gallon. :banghead: (not that I ever owned one)

It's an old rivalry, has nothing to do with logic.

They are the same company. Thats like saying the Sable and the Taurus had a rivalry. Basically, GMC trucks were upgraded versions Chevy trucks just as Lincoln / Mercury were upgraded versions of Ford cars.

They just had a bit more luxury equipment and usually carried a slightly higher price tag than their counter part.

I'm not sure if that is true with Chevy and Pontiac. Referring to Firebird and Camero. I was always a Firebird fan first, except in the case of a Candy Apple Red '68 Camero SS. ;)

My first car was an 81 Camaro Z28 with t-tops and a 406 SB Chevy, a friend of mine had a black 79 Trans Am with the gold Firebird on the hood and another friend had a white 80 Trans Am that was gutted for the track, so fair to say I've spent a decent amount of time around F-Bodies.

There has always been a brotherly rivalry between the F-Body fans despite their cars being almost identical, but obviously they'd unite against their common enemy, the Mustang.

I'm a Camaro guy, I think generation for generation the Camaro looks better, especially the 3rd generation but I did like the 4th gen Firebird, always wanted one. I will admit I was always envious of my friends shaker hood scoops on their 2nd gen Firebirds though.
