HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Contract negotiations are heating up with veteran nose tackle Jason Ferguson and a deal could be reached in the coming days, a person with knowledge of the talks said yesterday.
Assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum met with Ferguson's agent, Jimmy Sexton, recently and the two sides made significant progress. Terms of the deal are not known at this time.

The signing of Ferguson, who was to become an unrestricted free agent, means the Jets' defensive line will remain intact for at least another year and probably longer.
Defensive end Shaun Ellis signed a new deal last month that paid him $15.5 million in guaranteed money. Pro Bowl DE John Abraham, who becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season, will almost certainly be given the "franchise" tag if the two sides can't reach a long-term agreement. And defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson is in the second year of a seven-year deal.
Ferguson, an eight-year vet, is having his best season with 57 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks. The Jets rank sixth in the NFL in total defense, seventh against the run.
