We all know that Willey has been less than stellar this season. In fact. IMHO, he's been downright awful! Do think the cowboys braintrust will give him another year, or is he gone this season? Personally, much to my dismay, I think he will be kept around another year. What do you guys think?

If he is here next season I think he will have to earn the playing time because I do think Dallas will look once again for a DE that can help provide pressure.

Everything depends on salary....if his bonus is bigger than his salary, then we'll keep him anyway, though I certainly hope someone else will be starting and he'll be a part of the rotation.
If his salary is a significant amount, then we'll cut him so fast it will make your head spin...and we'll probably do it like we did with Mario...before we have his replacement in place.
It seems Parcells is better at knowing whom he doesn't want than he is at providing the answers (players) that ARE what he wants.

I agree with that statement. Everyone wants to purge people from the team (Nguyen, Wiley, Singleton, Coakley). But if we don't have adequate replacements, if not upgrades, then we're stuck with mediocre play like we had this year. Parcell's really pushed Coakley with Bradie James and James couldn't beat him out. So if we get rid of Coakley then who replaces him? We get rid of Wiley, who replaces him? Not that Wiley would be a big loss, but if we don't have anybody on the roster who can beat him out, then what does that say about the young guys we got.

Yeah, I was wondering who that was as well because in Year 2 of my Franchis e on Madden (next year), I picked Chris Henry from WVA in Round 2. He looks just like that in the game (dreads and everything).

You don't have to replace the weak links in your team with your backups. You look at what's available in free agency and the draft.
I think they will give Wiley another year to see if he can pick it up before they cut him loose. I doubt they want to get the cap hit and then pay more money for another DE.

I worry about Parcells eye for free agent talent. Wiley, Mitchell, Ward, George and Vinny have shown to be poor choices. Now this next season we are gonna go free agent crazy? I don't remember Jimmy having this many free agent busts.

I know. I'm just saying based on the current roster. As bad as he's played, there's been nobody on the roster who can beat him. So we have to address it in FA (like we did last year when we got him) or the draft (which can be hit or miss).
Hopefully, he'll pick it up in the offseason and re-dedicate himself to being Marcellus Wiley - the football player and not Dat Dude, so we don't have to shell out big bucks for somebody else.

Well said WG...
I agree.
If we don't bring in someone that is an immediate improvement look for Wiley to stay another year.

Wiley is set to make $2M in salary next season. His cap cost is $3M. The salary cap impact of cutting him vs. playing him next year is neutral.
Right now Parcells seems to trot him out there regularly so I suspect he will be back next year.
He does have some experience as a 3-4 end so he could be in the mix there with Carson, Glover and Ellis if we switch base defenses.
I am sure he will be back for camps at least,IF we pickup someone that can replace him he can be cut before the season without a problem. :jints:

I think Wiley is likely gone. If the cap cost is basically a wash with the salary cost, you almost always dump players that are grossly underperforming. Coakley is another prime example, he will either be restructured or be gone most likley.

Yes, the cap effect is essentially neutral whether he plays or is cut before June 1st - $3M either way. If we cut him after June 1st he counts $1M against 2005 cap so we save $2M and have a future cap payment of $2M in 2006.

I think Wiley will be back in a rotational capacity. Coach Parcells will get a RDE whether via free agency (Abraham), trade (Abraham) or draft but he knows that the best way to wear down an OL is to send solid players in waves at him. I envision Wiley spelling Ellis and whoever is the starter at RDE.

The thing that separates Wiley from Og is Wiley's ability to play the run and once every blue moon put pressure on a QB. I think Wiley is better than Og as an all around player. We'll see though. Og is cheaper to keep.
