View Full Version : Woodson's contract status
What prevents Dallas from releasing Woodson tomorrow and accelerating the 1.6 million unamortized signing bonus into 2004 salary cap year?
Also, can anyone venture a guess into what salary cap credit we will carry into 2005 salary cap year due to many "likely to be earned" incentives that were not reached by a underachieving Dallas team in 2004. I am assuming Roy Williams and Terrence Newman did not hit their likely to be earned incentives. This might be a question AdamJT. Thanks

There's a deadline for having a player's salary accelerate into a given season. That deadline has passed.

NFL rules state that for any player released after June 1, the current year's bonus proration remains in the current year and any future prorations accelerate into the followng year.
If, for whatever reason, the Cowboys wanted to accelerate his entire bonus into this season, all they'd have to do is get him to renegotiate his contract, lopping off the next two seasons. By rule, since his 2005 and 2006 contract years no longer exist, the $1.6 million would accelerate into this season.

The net cap credit/charge that carries over from one season to the next is a combination of all sorts of things, and it can be pretty difficult to estimate what the exact number will be. I will, however, see if I can figure out as many of the incentives as possible.
I am assuming Roy Williams and Terrence Newman did not hit their likely to be earned incentives. Neither one had any LTBE incentives in their contract for this season.

Now, wouldn't D-Wood just love that? If it works for the team, too, great stuff, go ahead and do it!
