I'm feeling philosophical, so bear with me. Sitting here in gorgeous South Beach, overlooking Fisher Island while the cruise ships sail under my window. Meanwhile, I checked in with my office. Our company has offices in several countries hit by the tsunami, particularly in India. We dealt with a lot of the folks in that office every day, either by phone or e-mail. Noone has heard from that office all week. Someone from my office was celebrating his anniversary on one of the Indonesian islands that was hit--he was married there just last year. Also not heard from yet. Everyone is hoping for the best for all of them. Then, there's the ever-increasing count of victims, every time a new newscast comes on.
My brother works with the Marine Corps at the Pentagon. Every day, they get the heartbreaking list of casualties, both dead & wounded, lists that bring devastation to families around the country. Whatever one thinks of why they're in Iraq, they are protecting our freedom but paying a heavy price.
Anyway, it kinda puts complaining about whether Henson should start, or how much Parcells sucks, or who should be fired into perspective. All of a sudden, it really pales in importance. It is, after all, football. It's a game we all love, & a team we all love, but it's entertainment. Yes, it's been a disappointing season, but there's always next season. Sadly, that's something that hundreds of thousands of people can't say.
I'm just so grateful that, getting up this morning, my biggest concern was how chilly it might be. How fortunate I am that THAT is all I've got to be worrying about right now (apart from being worried sick about my colleagues in the stricken regions). And for those of you who may be spending a lot of your time moaning about what's happening with the team this year--hey, if that's the worst you have to be worried about, you are really blessed.
Anyway, thanks for bearing with me on this. I wish everyone a Happy New Year. I'm incredibly thankful for the many blessings I've got. I hope you all can feel the same. May we all have a safe & healthy 2005. And maybe, just maybe, when we watch the last game of the season, instead of grumping about what goes wrong & the woulda-shouldas & who we hate, we can take a moment to remember some of the tragedies going on around us & be happy that we're able to be watching football at all, in the comfort of our safe homes, surrounded by loved ones.
THEN we can start in on Monday with who should be signed as FAs &/or drafted.
