View Full Version : All the talk about Roy's 'drag tackle'

With all the discussions that popped up after the Owens injury, I would have thought that at least one person would have noticed that the tackle on Owens was different than the one on which Musa Smith broke his leg. When Roy tackled Owens he grabbed the collar of his shoulder pads, and everyone was up in arms (with some of the more retarded fans saying it was the same thing as grabbing the facemask), but on the Smith tackle Roy grabbed his shirt - he came in from the side, grabbed the collar of his shirt on the side and front, and his hands never managed to grab the shoulder pad at all. He could as easily have been holding onto Smith's sleeve. Also, the tackle wasn't remotely from behind like it was on Owens. Roy had one hand in front of Smith's jersey and the other on the side of his collar, he didn't grab anything at the back of the jersey or pads.
I was making clips from the Ravens game (yeah, I'm 5 games behind) and noticed that, thought I'd point it out.

And, in the Musa tackle, his weight came down on Musa's ankle, breaking it in two.
His weight never was a factor in the Owens tackle.

you know I was thinking about this and Roy has to have some incredibly strong hands to be able to stop guys like TO with that type of tackle.

That's why I don't think you have to worry about them making a rule to outlaw that tackle. There is just not many guys that can do that tackle well enough to break legs and rip groins the way the Roy Williams can.
Not many defenders would have the confidence in their strength to even try to tackle like that except in desperation. Most guys will lunge into the runner, wrap him up and drag him down.
That allows the runner to fall forward most of the time for added yards, but it is a less risky tackle for the defender, as he is less likely to miss getting a good grip on the ballcarrier.

THey were tackled legally, any rule to try and prevent the type of injury Owens had would damage the game beyond all repair.
It is football people, people get hurt. I was watching a local football game this fall and a kid involved in a tackle broke his hip, really got messed up, he will be in therapy for months. Football is a rough sport. :banghead:

The 'drag' was actually in response to Musa trying to stiff arm Roy. If Musa hadn't stiff armed him Roy would have simply driven into his side and made the tackle that way. I think they should outlaw stiff arms to prevent this type of injury.

Lets just put skirts on all of them. Then we can rename it baseball.

It's the NFL ! what do they want 2 hand touch :banghead: Notice against Musa how RW is trying to tackle him high :nono2: I'm sure he was never taught that it's the right way to tackle
Who cares what they say about his tackling. If he doesn't grab him, he is doing his stupid dance in the endzone like he did on the Monday Night game. Roy missed him in that game and he got his first TD for the evening. :iggles:

I think the tackle is ok if the runner knows he's about to be grabbed from behind. That way he would be able to better protect himself from injury.
I would be in favor of a rule that states that the defender must verbally tell the runner in advance that he's about to be drag tackled. I think even tapping him on the shoulder and whispering it into his ear beforehand would be acceptable.

Or the defenders could wear some type of siren apparatus that they could maybe activate when they want the offensive player to pull over. If the defender is close enough and the offensive player fails to pull over he can be tackled from behind. That way the offensive player will have the option of pulling over without the risk of injury.

I think that would work too! And your proposed use of technology is very innovative I might add. :D

They need to do something to spruce up the game, I hear MNF is struggling with ratings. A few high speed chases with sirens might do wonders. ;)

geez. the injuries were so obviously inadvertant. roy is a big physical safety. he is gonna hurt some people in any tackle situation. it was an accident for crying out loud. like i'm sure roy was thinking "must grab collar and snap legs"....

Yeah, they need to come up with some more gimmicks to get ratings back up.
How about introducing "Ligament Cam"?
