Android to overtake iPhone in 2012 - analyst

Symbian still on top, but BlackBerry down

Google’s Android will have more than quadrupled its market share by the end of 2012, market watcher Gartner has claimed. But Symbian looks set to remain the dominant smartphone OS for several years to come.

Android’s market share stood at a paltry 1.6 per cent during Q1 2009, but will grow to 14.5 per cent by the time Q4 2012 rolls around, Gartner forecast, based on an estimated 522m smartphones shipping worldwide during the period.

As a result, Android will move from its current position as the sixth most popular operating system for smartphones to become the second most popular, Gartner said.

The main reason for Android’s market share growth will, Gartner VP Ken Dulaney told website AppleInsider, be because “unlike Apple, they [Google] license their OS to multiple OEMs”.

Dulaney said many handset makers are betting their futures on Android, while Apple is just one company.

Speaking of Apple, its share of the smartphone OS market will also grow - but only from 10.8 per cent to 13.7 per cent, Gartner said.

Symbian will remain the most popular OS. However, its market share will drop from 49.3 per cent during Q1 2009 to 39 per cent by Q4 2012.

Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS is currently the second most popular handset OS, Gartner said, with a Q1 2009 market share of 19.9 per cent. But it will slip to fifth place by Q4 2012 with market share of just 12.5 per cent.

Windows Mobile's share will grow from 10.3 per cent to 12.8 per cent during the same quarters, Gartner added, which will see it remain as the fourth most popular phone-based OS.

The phone I'm actually looking forward to is the new Nokia N900. It is supposed to rival the iPhone, but be different. It supports the touch screen, but also includes a full keyboard.

Very cool stuff.

This has more to do with the fact that you can slap Android into any crappy phone, whereas the iPhone is about hardware as much as it's about software.

It's about money. Apple doesn't put it on any other hardware because they want to sell you the hardware. (the more they sell you, the more money they make) Why do you think they expect you to send them your iPhone to change the battery? The iPhone's hardware isn't any higher quality than a Blackberry, Android, or any other *real* smart phone.

Plus they have to overcome the iPhone's huge popularity and app support.

It also looks like iPhone exclusivity is going by the wayside.

If you are trying to use this as an advance tool to market to customers in English speaking nations you should find an employee who is clear and understandable in their English and have them host the video.

What the Finns did here was terrible. If it's a video in Swahili find someone who communicates in that language. If it Dutch same thing, but don't plug in one of your corporate nationals as a way to stroke his ego.

Product, marketing, distribution, accounting, employees, R&D, etc. For some companies, their product and distribution is a blender sent my truck or train box car. For my company, a trading platform sent by TCP/IP. They develop blenders so people can cook at home, we develop technology so that institutions can trade large amounts of energy derivatives. The Cowboys product is a football team and their distribution is television broadcast.

There is a reason why you get CEO's of huge mega-corporations that go not only from one company to another, but into entirely different sectors. These guys are super smart business wise. They can make the primary decisions, just just require a good staff below them that know their job and can present the information needed for the CEO to make the the right decision.

Jerry makes great business decisions concerning the Cowboys on the business side, but he lets his emotions get in the way when trying to handle the team itself. He is a micro-manager, he must have his hands on everything.

Stiffer competition does. Apple produced the iPhone which was ground breaking. With Android and the new OS that will be running on the Nokia N900 (Linux based) the iPhone won't be in a class by itself anymore. That talks to Apple's bottom line.

I agree, but at some point the competition will catch up. For the longest time Palm, Blackberry, and WindowsCE were the standard. If you look back today, they mostly didn't innovate to much after they set the standard and then had the doors blown off by Apple. Since the release of the first iPhone, Apple hasn't exactly changed much either.

That is why I think Apple is about to get a rude awakening. Android's first phone wasn't all that impressive, but I'm willing to bet Google will change that. This new Linux based OS that is coming out looks like it can compete with anything. The fact that it has an actually keyboard along with the touch screen alone makes it a better option for me.

I had a PocketPC about 5-6 years ago and it didn't have a *real* keyboard. That was a mistake I haven't made since.

I hate typing on my wife's iTouch. I have to fill in her network information for our Wifi sometimes and it's a pain in the ***!
