These type games are 10x better on PC. CoD4 owned, CoD5 was suspect. I love the fact that they returned to CoD4's format with modern warfare 2.
I don't have a ton of time right now, but I might have to pick it up for PC. (no way I waste quality FPS on a stupid console game)

There's 2 different developers who that take turns, that's why 4 and 6 are so good and 3 and 5 so crap
The PC version is a port of the console version this year so it's not better it's exactly the same

1,2,4,6 have been made by Infinity Ward. 1,2,4 have each earned game of the year awards. getting it with 6 they will have a perfect 4/4 streak

I really hate that General Shepherd turned on Price/MacTavish/etc
I mean.. the United States is in flames and this guy all of a sudden makes the "Yanks" bad guys? Hate that story line. It's going to make replaying the campaign not fun anymore when you're "suiting up" for him in battle in the early levels knowing he's just really going to betray you/everyone. Not to mention once you realize he was a liar, you, playing as MacTavish, are shooting US soldiers... ****ing bull****.

Totally agree. I still don't understand how people play games like this without a mouse.
I see there's been a significant outcry against the 'No Russian' scene (not even a real level).
Don't really understand what the fuss is about myself, it's not the first game that lets you kill civilians if you wish.

I don't understand why graphics on a PC, even with the most kick *** system out there, are never quite as good/smooth as they are on the 360.
I do prefer mouse aiming. But I can't stand playing games on PCs anymore due to not being able to play full graphics as smooth as on a 360. The slight, occasional jerks are too annoying.

Thats odd that you say that considering consoles use lower end PC hardware (compared to today) AND less memory and clock speed. The XBOX360 uses an ATI video card at 500mhz. The PS3 uses the RSX which is an Nvida product that is runs at 550mhz. I believe both have 512MB of graphics memory.
Today's high end cards (I will say starting at $200 which isn't really high end) usually start with 1GB of memory. The very high end cards, have multi-cores and over 2,100mhz memory clock speeds and shader speeds at 1,250mhz with memory throughputs running around 4GB/sec which will blow the doors off of what the consoles offer.
I'm not sure what you are playing on, but CoD4 graphics on my PC were far superior to CoD4 on the console. Actually almost every single aspect of the game was better. I haven't seen MWII yet. My son has it for PS3 at his real dad's, I haven't purchased it for the PC (yet...maybe, as I don't have a lot of time right now)

Sorry, I wasn't aware I had to write an essay, provide a hypothesis and cite sources as proof on a message board in order to post. Anyways, here you go.
Obviously, FPS on PC is generally superior, but not in the case of MW2. Lack of dedicated servers for a new p2p service that sucks, ridiculous host migration, locked down to keep the mod community out, games limited to 18 and sometimes 12 players (this is inexcusable for a PC FPS), PC version priced at 59.99 instead of 49.99 like every other PC game....PC Gamers are hopping mad and have been complaining for a solid month and a half on all the major gaming sites/forums.
If you'd have taken the 3 seconds to google for the PC issues with MW2 you could have found this yourself instead.
Of course, some of these affect the console game too, but for a PC version to be like this is inexcusable, IMO. Consoles are limited and locked-down by their very nature, but there's no need for PC to be as well. Other than IW and Activision being cheap.

Yeah, I agree that it's odd that console graphics are better and run smoother than PC's with even the most high end hardware. I don't understand why it's the case. But it is for whatever reason.
Many of the games are programmed and designed from the ground up for the console set up, and then often poorly ported to the PC. The advantage for the consoles is that everything is locked down, and you know exactly what to program for, unlike the PC world, with its phantasmagorical collection of hardware setups. Unoptimized ports can really suffer on the PC, despite its superior hardware. GTA4 is the present main example.
Given that the video games industry has beaten Hollywood out in profits for a couple of years, there are lots of companies trying to get a piece of that pie. They look at WoWarcraft pulling in $150 million a month, and want to jump right in. Hence the change to games that cut out modding and player run servers and such. Keeping control of things like that gives the companys a chance to sell downloaded content that used to be provided for free by the fans.
The consoles tend be updated in 5 year cycles, so gaming right now is aiming at a three+ year old target, and suffering on the PC because of it.
As far as CoD:MW2, I like the series less and less, and probably won't pick up the game til it hits the bargain bin. Strictly PC of course. ;) I don't do multiplayer hardly at all these days, so it is not a good value for me either. It took all of a week for player hacks to show up to cheat in MP, despite the supposed increased security of the dedicated server set up. It was all about charging more money for DLC.

It is simple when you think about. PC devs have to develope the game for many different computer specs. Console devs only have to worry about one to two configurations, thus giving them more time for graphic, sound, etc optimization. Giving the power of the Xbox and PS3 this allows the devs to really create some special experiences that would have been unheard of back in the day.
Similar analogy, when shopping for a new HDTV, my wife and I looked at tons of TVs and we ended up getting one with less specs, because it looked better. I was making the argument about the specs yet as clear as day the one with the lesser specs just plain looked better, it is the same with some Xbox360 v PC games.

I'll put my dual cards against any console game out there that's been ported to the PC platform.
PC games are far more detailed than most console games that have been ported.

Dallas,
Any console game that has better graphics than a PC game is because the PC game doesn't exist, or the PC release of the game is far older than the console itself.
Otherwise, someone did a half-***** port of the console to the PC which should have been the other way around. As porting a console to a PC is like porting a cell phone to a land line. Useless and STUPID!

PC games can have good graphics, but they don't run smoothly on any system whatsoever. And by "smoothly" I mean perfectly smooth. That's what pisses me off. Any sort of jerky motion whatsoever completely kills the experience for me and even the most kick *** PC system has jerky motion, so don't pretend that it doesn't.
And by the way that picture isn't that impressive. Console games easily have graphics that good.

Huh? You've never played a game on a PC that ran smoothly? I'm not sure exactly what you mean, perhaps you could clarify?
If you're talking frame rates, that's graphics in general. Even the consoles drop frames and you can tweak the graphic setting on a pc game to try and remedy that, no such option with consoles.

They have a 3 year warranty on the red rings error, did you get it over 3 years ago?
I have two. One that I get when the 360 was originally released and a elite. They both have gotten the error, the white one twice. The Elite was still under warranty so I sent it in.
The original was out of warranty so I got one of the fix kits off ebay, sat down with a beer and did it myself. It's not hard, the instructions I got were more or less idiot proof but I've opened mine up a few times already (the optical drive died and I bought and replaced it myself) so I was a little more confident as to how it came apart and back together.
I'd recommend doing it yourself if its out of warranty, the kit is only like 20 bucks and it takes at most 3 hours.
The xbox repair process is much better than it used to be though, it doesnt take 3 weeks. You can do it all online and print up a prepaid shipping label, drop it off at UPS the next day and have it back in about a week and a half or so.

Turned on my X Box and all I see is E 74

Not to get off the subject of the OP, but I just bought a 360 elite for my kids for Christmas. I'm a PC gamer so I don't know much about the consoles and if these errors are still a problem.
I bought it from Best Buy. Should I purchase the Best Buy warranty that they sell for it. I believe it is $99?

No way, all new Xbox's come with a 3 year warranty (protection from the red ring of death) and they'll fix and replace it for free
no need to bother with Best Buy's warranty (in my opinion)
that being said, I've read that the problem has mostly been eradicated in newer units

OK, but isn't that a warranty where you have to mail it into Microsoft and wait a month or more to get it back?

It doesn't take nearly that long. When I did it three years ago it only took about one week....and from what I've heard they've streamlined the process even more now.
Sweating the "red ring" is about as lame as the people on this forum that throw fits every time Wade farts.
Don't sweat it. They'll enjoy it.

Um, no. All Best Buy does is take it from you at the store and send it to Microsoft. They won't give you a new one. Stick with the regular warranty.
I bought a warranty from Target when I got mine thinking the same thing, although it certainly wasnt 100 bucks, and I got the red rings, called them and they said just call Microsoft.

I think you got ripped off, I know several people that got the warranty from best buy, and they were able to trade in the defective system for a brand new one in the box. One guy actually brouhgt in an original 360 and ended up getting one back with the hdmi port.

If you're a PC gamer, MW2 had to be the disappointment of the year. Shipping a PC game in this day and age without support for dedicated servers is so far beyond ridiculous I can't think of a proper term to describe it at the moment.
What's even more insulting is it is a 360 port in every sense of the word yet still carried a $60 price tag.
http://www.infinityward.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=170116
Some guy went deep diving in the PC multiplayer .exe and found nifty code like this:
006D9298: 'We suck as host - ending the game',0Ah,0
0071EB98: 'set systemlink 0; set splitscreen 0; set onlinegame 1; exec default_xboxlive.cfg',0
0070573C: 'menu_xboxlive_privatelobby',0
The single player campaign had its moments, but $60 for a 5-6 hour campaign is ludicrous. I know it has no effect on them whatsoever, but Infinity Ward lost a customer, and that's a shame.
You should try playing PC games on a computer that isn't an e-machines. My computer is far from top of the line and I had no "jerky" instances, save a handful of sequences that put a heavy load on the GPU. As far as being graphically impressive, a good PC will blow the current consoles out of the water, and MW2 is no exception.
Here's a video that compares MW2 among the 360, PS3, and PC. Pay particular attention to the specular lighting, shadow quality, particle effects, and texture quality on the PC version:

Considering my PC will chew up and spit out a console in terms of graphical and processing power, as well as being capable of much more than gaming, I'll stick with my PC and hardly consider myself a "dinosaur". And I speak as a person who owns a 360.
you do realize why they dont allow dedicated servers right? If you're referring to piracy, this is a fallacy considering its next to impossible to play a pirated game in multiplayer due to the fact you need a pirated server, which are easily shut down by ceast and desist orders. If you're referring to hacking, well hacking has been a problem for PC games since their inception. This is why you play on reputable servers with active admin support as well as anti-cheat tools.

Despite the size of this thread, I'm hoping there are enough guys here that play MW2 enough to get a clan going.
There's been talk of NFL forum communities playing each other in MW2. Getting some matches between our respective teams clans would be pretty hot.

Yeah....knowing the maps is paramount if you want to hang. It sucks worse when you've bought the game a good time after the release....they try and match you with other noobs, but it doesn't always work out that way.
If you have the patience, I'd suggest getting a walk through in a private match with some people that know the maps. They can show you all of the nooks and crannies, all of the shadows, all of the key vantage points. Then you can run them full speed with more confidence. Nothing sucks worse than running around a map without any sense of direction.

You know I don't really knife at all. I didn't in 4, WAW and MW2. I just hip fire most of time when I get close to somebody.
But yeah I understand the hate for the speed perk alot of these perks are a bunch of B.S.

I think they will get it figured out.
They took out a couple of glitches that were absolutely ridiculous. There was one glitch where someone would basically run out into the open with a javalin and fire it into the ground, killing everyone nearby.
I actually like th speed perk. I'd much rather they tone down those 1897 akimbo shotguns or whatever they are. Those things are ridiculous.

I do, but I have an even worse class. Assualt rifle+noob toob+scavenger+danger close+commando.
I Noob toob folks across the map without even looking, it is lethal.
The 1887s have been nerfed once, but they are still ridiculously overpowered. They are single-handedly ruining the multiplayer game. Almost as bad as the javelin/launcher cheat before they patched that.
Those speed-demon melee guys rarely kill me. It's easy to shoot them before they get within melee range. The people that complain about being killed repeatedly by them are usually the campers, and I don't have any sympathy for campers.

I'm not a camper. I just think its ****ing retarded that a guy can run 100 yards across a map in the same amount of time it takes to reload, or instantaneously kill you from 20 feet away with a melee. It's stupid. It's an FPS isn't it? Not an FPM. Most of the guys that use that perk don't even use their guns.

I don't understand why graphics on a PC, even with the most kick *** system out there, are never quite as good/smooth as they are on the 360.
I do prefer mouse aiming. But I can't stand playing games on PCs anymore due to not being able to play full graphics as smooth as on a 360. The slight, occasional jerks are too annoying.I have a Nvidia GTX250 vid card and 3gb mem on xp machine and run this game with great graphics smoothly, no hiccups or stuttering.

12-31-2009, 02:19 PM
Yeah, I agree that it's odd that console graphics are better and run smoother than PC's with even the most high end hardware. I don't understand why it's the case. But it is for whatever reason. With a console the programmers can tweak the game to the hardware till it is maximized but in the pc gaming world a game is played on too many variants and can't really be tweaked near as much.
