Former Cowboy's appeal denied

Associated Press

DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys defensive back Dwayne Goodrich's appeal of his conviction in a deadly hit-and-run accident two years ago was denied Thursday.

He was convicted in August 2003 on two counts of criminally negligent homicide and sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison.

Demont Matthews, 23, and Joby Wood, 21, both of Plano were rescuing a driver from a burning car on Interstate 35 when they were struck by Goodrich's BMW. He left the scene.

Goodrich told jurors that a sport utility vehicle blocked his view of the pre-dawn accident. He said he originally believed, or hoped, he had hit debris. Goodrich returned to the scene hours later and then turned himself into police.

"It's relief -- one thing less that we have to do -- not having to go through another court case," Joby Wood's mother, Laura Wood, told Dallas-Fort Worth television station KDFW.

Goodrich told KDFW that he feels bad that two "good men" died that night, but he doesn't think he should have to go to jail. He also said he would like one day to talk to Laura Wood.

I feel sorry for Goody but if you do the crime you got to pay the time.

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2981828Sorry Mr. Goodrich, but a judge/jury does.

Sounds to me like he doesn't even realize what he did. It wasn't like he was just involved in some random, freak accident he couldn't avoid. Drive down Stemmons at 100 MPH, and chances are you will kill someone. And the fact he just left the scene speaks volumes to his character. I know jail is going to interrupt his recent nightly partygoing, but that's just the way it goes. It's very sad and unfortunate.

I guess you won't see him at anymore parties for awhile, Brownsugar. !!

Of course the Chronicle is the one to print this. Probably was on the front page.

I doubt it. It was also in the roundup on ESPN.com. I just decided to pull it from the Chronicle, since it was more in depth and I don't have access to CowboyPlus.

Just curious if they happened to mention that David Carr's wife was soaked with beer by fans at their last game? Not a proud moment in Houston history I'm guessing. I heard it on the radio out on the road and thought to myself that Carr probably wanted to kill somebody. That was stupid for that fan to do that.

Didnt hear about that, I just heard he was booed. I generally dont pay attention to the Texans, but I thought they were pretty happy with what they had a QB.

On a side note, I have never disliked a Cowboy in my entire life. Usually, like say, Marcellus Wiley, I just say I dont like the way they played, but I do dislike Goodrich very much. I-35 is a major highway and I have relatives that live near that highway and it could have been one of them.

I don't watch the Texans either unless they're the only team on but I think they had a bad game against the Browns and so they booed Carr on some play that he got hit on and was taken out for one play.

It's true though. His wife and small sons I think were hit by beer and I guess that just goes to show that it only takes a few people to ruin it for a whole lot of people. I hope they got the guy or guys and charge them with something. That is uncalled for. Maybe they need to review their liquor policy. People come in smashed from tailgating and drink all game long and then they do something stupid.

That was stupid for that fan to do that.Every time I've seen them show Carr's family they're in a private suite. I wonder how this could have happened.

Even Houston fans know if Ekuban is getting consistent pressure they should boo the offensive line.

I believe they sit in seats that belong to a suite but the seats have seats above them in the next level that I guess people could toss stuff down or in her case douse her with beer. It's a true story. I just went to the Chronicle online and saw their columnist McClain had written a story about it.

I remember Troy use to get killed by the sorry O line we had in his early years. I guess Carr has the same problem.

Carr seems to be a tough QB. I know he's a good runner and I guess it must be frustrating to have a bad game and then find out your wife and kid got a beer bath. That just sucks. Sometimes I just have to shake my head at some of the things you hear and read about that happen at sporting events.

That is a cheap price for 2 innocent lives ended prematurely.
