We don't know for sure that Zimmer is a goner, but what do people think of Mike Singletary as a possible DC? I always loved him as a player (remember his eyes during a game?), & he seems to be doing a pretty decent job with the Ravens as a position coach. The Boys would be able to interview him, since DC would be a higher position. Whaddya think?

If he doesn't have any connection to Bill I would say the chances of him becoming DC would be between slim & none.

That 85 Bears Defense was the best I have ever seen...
They didn't just beat teams, they BEAT them UP!

I don't know what the record is for knocking out QB's, but they must have it...
Teams FEARED that defense...

I don't know if Mike could coach it, but anything that brings back Doomsday is OK by me!

Then teams figured out how to kill the 46 ... which is why it's a dinasaur and never used again.

Ha ha I think NOT...

Only the pin point passing of Marino was able to slow it down...
Sure others may try variations...but that was coached the best and had the best players to run it...

What was Sean Payton's connection to Tuna when he was hired as "assistant head coach" ?

You're right ... the 46 was such an unstoppable D, teams have emulated it over the past 20 years and it's a staple and heart of NFL defenses today.

He played for the "Giants"... don't you know that's like a "trump" card in this game? Heck, Payton got the "FREE PASS".

The 46 D isn't really suited for today's NFL. One of the big things in the 46 was hitting the QB early and often - whether he had the ball or not. A lot of the time early on you might be getting to him a hair to late, but he still paid for it and it would pay dividends as the game wore on. The idea was to make him take a beating and get him out of his game. You can't breath on the QB now, so a lot of the effectiveness of the D is gone IMO. Any team playing the 46 D like the 85 Bears did would take 20 personal foul penalties for roughing the passer every game.

I mentioned Singletary awhile ago....he would make a good hire if they decide to tie the can to Zimmer.

He was an assistant on the Giants a decade after Tuna left.

You guys love to Tuna bash, but is yet another without any merit ;)

Singletary has been a coach (at any level) for two seasons and his job is to coach inside linebackers -- Ray Lewis and Edgerton Hartwell. I imagine it's not hard to look good with those two. Both guys were good prior to Singletary's arrival. Has no coaching experience in college or even high school. I'm not sure what he was doing for the 10 years before being hired. Doesn't seem all that qualified.

WCO and multiple wide receiver sets made the 46 defense go the way dodo birds did.

Look at Virginia and LSU assistants.

This is a JJ/BP war, didn't they resign Zimm long term contract last year?

Has a young DC - Not sure if he's going to Dolphins.
