View Full Version : Colts’ Polian: ‘Momentum is overrated’

With one more win, the Indianapolis Colts can clinch the AFC’s top playoff seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. In terms of playoff positioning, another win would render the final three games meaningless.
That situation for the Colts — as well as the undefeated New Orleans Saints — is a topic of debate. Would the Colts rest key starters — namely QB Peyton Manning — during the final regular games to get healthy for the playoffs, or keep status quo to maintain momentum and take a shot at a perfect 16-0 regular season record?
No matter, says Colts president Bill Polian.
Polian is a believer in resting starting players in such games, and it doesn’t sound like he’s about to change his stance anytime soon.
“I don’t know how you get rusty when you practice four times a week. It’s pretty hard to be rusty in that situation,” Polian told NFL Network. “Secondly, momentum is an overrated situation. We didn’t have a lot of momentum going into the playoffs the year we won the Super Bowl.
“The fact is that at this time of year, you have very many players who are injured, playing hurt, who need rest because they have nagging injuries through which they’ve been fighting. That’s your first and most important consideration.”
Polian said the chance to go 16-0 doesn’t influence the decision, but it might take a loss to find out the real truth and what direction the Colts go.

1. Anyone who tries to compare practice to the actual game, especially the playoffs, is an idiot.
2. Polian never played pro football, so for him to try to act like he knows it himself, is also pretty idiotic.
3. The Colts winning the SB had little to do with them not having momentum. It had to do with one of the worst run defenses in NFL history dominating against the run in the playoffs, and a finesse passing team becoming a smash mouth running team. I cant explain it, but I've never seen such an identity change earn a SB run.(tho the Cardinals game close last year)

So we can add Polian to the list along with Jerry of GM's who talk about what the team plans on doing. I was under the believe that Jerry was the only one who talked with the media regarding the team plans

I misread it, too, then. Because it sure sounds like that's what you implied.

Hmmm, Bill Polian vs. The Panch.
On one hand, you have a man who has won the NFL's Executive of the Year Award 5 times. On the other hand, you have The Panch.
Nearly unrivaled success at the highest level in football vs. 3,000 posts on the CowboysZone.
Hmmm...

However the message gets out the GM is involved I don't care if Jerry has a radio show or not. Hell Tex Schramm had his own TV show right before the Tom Landry show. That is what kills me is Tex was very involved with the Cowboys he was at the draft table, he was at training camp and practice he was vocal about the Cowboys. Jerry is not much different than Tex

He's never played the game, so for him to act like practice is the equivalent of a playoff game is idiotic. I was referring to my first point.

Actually what he said was that resting players in meaningless games doesn't make them rusty, because they practice 4 times a week.
Obviously practices aren't the same as games, if they were then there wouldn't be a need to rest players. Games are more intense than practices and involve hitting, so the injury risk goes up a lot. That's WHY you rest guys. He never argued differently.
What he is saying, though, is that guys don't forget how to run and throw and catch and tackle just because they rest for a game or two. They practice that stuff during the week. Yes, that's open to debate, but that was his point. Not what you said.

Jerry Jones played football at a high level. He was part of a college team that won a national championship. :D

That is more than some GM's. :laugh2:
Best tool Jerry can use is his ears, in listening to what his scouts and coaches have to say he has been able to bring in talent on this team.
