Pete Carroll already has his own parking spot. Now he's starting to build a coaching staff.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Carroll has landed Alex Gibbs as his offensive line coach, a significant coup for a new staff that may be made up mostly of college coaches.

Gibbs, the godfather of zone blocking in the NFL, has long been known as one of the premier offensive line coaches in the league. He's enjoyed success in Denver, Atlanta, and Houston. His contract with the Texans as assistant head coach ran out at the end of the season.

As Mort points out, Gibbs' approach to the running game will work seamlessly with what Jeremy Bates wants to do. Bates worked in Denver before working under Carroll at USC and is expected to be named Seattle's

UPDATE: Carroll didn't confirm the news at his press conference. "If that happens, [hiring him] will be an outstanding achievement."

What is happening to Shanahan is the same thing that happened to Coach Parcells--a shortage of his cronies--so he will have to improvise a little bit.

I believe Shanahan was counting on Kubiak and his staff getting disbanded and he'd have them as well as what remnants have been hanging around with him for a year. But it looks like Carroll getting both Gibbs and Bates is a blow.

I think he still can get Rick Dennison from Denver, if he does not join Kubiak with the Texans to take Kyle Shanahan's spot. But Gibbs was a loss, as he is more proficient in installing the scheme as he has done it in Atlanta and Houston since leaving Denver.

That whole Redskin team will look like Denver East next year. Scheffler, Peyton Hillis and even Marshall are supposedly on the outs as McDaniels is cleaning house.

With good Draft status and a decent coaching staff I wonder if and when Seattle could take back the NFC West? I think a lot will depend on if Warner does hang 'em up.

I'll go out on a limb. St. Louis will make a bigger rise than Seattle if they take Suh with the #1 pick instead of reaching for a QB.

Seattle really had a lot of injuries this year (again) and has enough residual talent to give the 49ers a run for their money. Arizona really had a bit of an off-year and still won the worst division in football rather easily. They need to remake their entire defense really soon though or that division could easily have a champion at .500.

wouldn't it be weird if somehow PC was able to get something out of Julius? Shannahan was a master at getting anyone over 1000. JJ probably ought to think about that- but then of course the whole Redskin O line is pretty sad now.

That entire division is devoid of a decent QB.

I have never been an "its all about the QB" guy but you can't win with some of those scrubs that's to be sure.

The first team to get a solid QB is the one who takes off imho.

I wonder if Carroll doesn't actually try to get Leinart from the Cards. I know the Cards need a QB but if they don't believe in Leinart I am pretty sure Carroll does.

Its been proven you don't have to pick the first QB to end up with the proper one for your team.

Suh is simply so dominating St. Louis has to take him. There only chance to be competitive any time soon is to play defense and pound Steven Jackson.

Which one would you do? Me, I don't even hesitate to take Suh. Heck, I'd roll the dice on a veteran QB via FA before I would reach for a QB overall #1 this year. It might be different it Locker were going pro, but last I heard he's staying at UW.

Carraker, Long, and Suh on your D-line. Shore up the OL and get a vet QB. Run the ball, control the LOS on both sides and groom a young QB you take in round 2.

I think McCoy will be right there.

There are reports of friction between Gibbs and Shanahan, possibly because of Gibbs' allegiance to his son who is, I believe, the secondary coach for the Texans. We'll see if Gibbs Jr. goes to Seattle as well.

Never pass up the pass rusher, especially if he is an interior pass rusher. The rest of the rounds take BPA.

You always take the best player. That is Suh and by a huge margin. I don't feel confident that any of the top QB prospects are sure things. Bradford is debateable and I think Clausen is massively overrated. Neither of which are worth rolling the dice over and passing over Suh.

Even though they won't go anywhere without a QB, you simply cannot force things when you have a franchise type DT staring you in the face.

I am almost 100% sure Campbell stays. Now do not put Chris Simms out of your mind. He and Shanahan's son are BFFs.
