Does anyone watch the good, bad and the ugly? It starts tonight. No Paula this year instead Ellen Degeneres. This is Simon last year doing American Idol too as he announced it yesterday.

Hoe is Ellen an upgrade at least Paula you try to gauge how drunk she was on a 1-10 scale

I'll watch a few episodes until it gets on my nerves. Tonight's favorite moment was that girl who couldn't sing, but looked good. And when she left Randy's mouth dropped when he looked at her booty. And Beckham did the round booty hand motion. Then Randy was like, "...on second thought."

I like American Idol. We usually watch it with just the parents while they are auditioning and with the kids once they get to Hollywood. My kids love it and it is much more entertaining that Dora the Explorer and Wow Wow Wubbzy.

I really liked Paula though. Getting to see her weekly babbling sessions is what made the show entertaining for me.

Not many stand out performances last night, but the Hispanic gal (forget her name), the guy that looked like a seventies drug addict and the the guy that beat cancer were all pretty good.

It's a good show for anyone that likes music. They place too much emphasis on the bad singers early on, though. I know lots of people get a kick out of that, but its just annoying.

I don't pay much attention to it if I can get away with it but my daughter wants me to watch it with her so I do.

This.

I typically only watch it when they start to limit the contestants to the ones who can actually sing, like the ending stages of Hollywood week and after.

I respectfully disagree. It's a terrible show for people who actually like music, and even worse for people that love music. Every now and then you'll get a unique talent like Fantasia, but that's obviously very very rare.

If by music you mean corporate prepackaged bubble gum music for the tennie boppers with little to no originality...you are right.:laugh2:

It is not about the music for the people who run the show and who will sign these kids, it is about ratings, commercialization in the music business and the almighty dollar.

If you like music, you'll like the show. Finding those rare talents that can sing and have an ear for music is fun to watch. The best parts are those when the truly artistic contestants take a song and re-compose it or even just add small touches that show real talent for music.

Anyone who likes music, particularly those that have actually written music before, will appreciate that in a variety of themes, whether it's pop or whatever.

The people that don't obviously won't like the show. Most people think they "like" music. But they don't really know much about it. Not enough to actually break it down and understand it. They only listen to music casually and will thus only care to listen to a small sample of their particular taste. That's not at all what I mean by "liking music."

TheCount
01-16-2010, 09:17 AM

Wrong. I like music, have written it and work with plenty of musicians and don't like the show, so your theory is already proven false. ;)

Wrong. I like music, have written it and work with plenty of musicians and don't like the show, so your theory is already proven false. ;)Obviously I'm speaking in a generality. Some people may not have the patience for the show, regardless of their love for music. It's also wrong then to say that it's a terrible show for people that "love music." I know that it's rare to find a unique talent on the show, but that's why it's rewarding. There's usually only one or two every year and it's fun to listen to and root for those individuals every year.

I know most music people get turned off by the large hordes that root for talentless jokes like Taylor Hicks and Sanjaya, but there's not another show on television with such a focus on musical talent, and you just have to deal with the "rough edges" that are necessary to bring in the massive audiences.

is the reason cowell's leaving not just so he can start the x factor over there? its basically the same show except they divide it up into categories (boys, girls, over 25s and groups) and each category is mentored by a judge.

still just about bearable early on when they have the folk who clearly cant sing which is sometimes good for a cheap laugh and then horrendous viewing once they get beyond that.

i've heard that's the reason, but i highly doubt that it will work here in the states. besides the only major star to emerge from "the x-factor" is leona lewis, the woman who sings the song "bleeding love"(click link to see the video):

Last nights show sucked, Avril Lavigne was wearing some sort of devil costume with horns on her head and Katy Perry was just awful.

The contestants all sucked as well, one of the worst episodes so far of the season. I swear, American Idol gets worse year after year and this crap is barely even watchable now.

Avril Lavigne was much more critical than I thought was necessary. Her telling that one guy no because he had a family was ridiculous. She's supposed to judge the talent, not tell someone what they should do with their life.

Katie Perry seems to have the personality of a tree stump. A grumpy tree stump at that. One of the most agonizing people I've ever had to watch on TV. Hope neither of them are asked to judge anything again that I am even remotely involved in watching.

Yes, I'm with you on that. Having her hair "put up" in that weird way only accentuated her overly skinny neck and made her look even worse. She really needs to gain some weight.

I worked with a gentleman that was the sole breadwinner in his family...

His income was based solely on the accounts he sold and serviced...

He had three daughters... and I worked with him during the birth of two of them.

He really struggled with not being there, but his working allowed them the financing for his wife to stay at home with his daughters and provide a pretty cush life with a stay-at-home mom... and that was something they agreed on...

It certainly sounds callous, but some families have longer term motives...

I can't say if it is right or wrong, but they did it for a reason...

Some friends of mine made a drinking game to Paula once they got to the final twelve. Every time Paula made a comment that made little to no sense, they would drink (kind of like playing James Bond). I never played it because I don't really drink that much, but they were really bummed out when Paula left the show.

Some friends of mine made a drinking game to Paula once they got to the final twelve. Every time Paula made a comment that made little to no sense, they would drink (kind of like playing James Bond). I never played it because I don't really drink that much, but they were really bummed out when Paula left the show.

They must have been smashed by the first commercial. :laugh2:

I liked the girl that sang the fitzgerald song, although she song a fitzgerald song she reminded me more of Billie Holiday (sp?). I just liked her voice and style as it was not cookie cutter like most of them.

Yeah, I saw a rumor that Howard Stern may replace Cowell. Why? These people don't know any more about music than your average person. Simon, I think, brings credibility to the show, because he's legitimately trying to find someone that will be a big success -- and he's proven he can do that.

Howard Stern's just trying to draw attention to himself. He's not being seriously considered according to this article (http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-02-09/no-idol-for-stern/). The AI crew is probably OK with him talking about the possibility because it keeps their brand in the news but Stern actually being on the show won't happen.

Ellen seemed to do pretty well in last night's episode, I tuned in out of curiosity. She may not be able to discuss music technical but she seems tuned into what makes people connect to singers.

I don't miss Paula's incoherence nor will I miss the stupid "fights" she had with Simon. Kara's the most musically knowledgeable on the panel but it's on her to actually show it. Randy's musically knowledgeable too but I'm past the point of expecting him to graduate past "dawg".

Seems like some pretty good talent this year. I liked Andrew, Crystal, Didi (Gemini, that's your waitress), Michael (the new daddy), Janell, and Casey and a few others whose names aren't coming to me right now.

.Chris Golightly Disqualified, Tim Urban In For American Idol Top 24
Written under: Entertainment, Music

American Idol 2010 Top 24 Chris Golightly from the Los Angeles auditions has been disqualified from the contest and is being replaced by Tim Urban.

According to a statement from FOX, “It has been determined that Chris Golightly is ineligible to continue in the competition”. Now speculations are floating why Golightly was disqualified.

However, the most acceptable reason for the disqualification is Golightly’s existing old contract with a boy band that expired in June 2009 – to which he could not produce release papers for to prove its expiration.

Unfortunately, the old manager was able to email the contract release but Idol execs have already made their decision. Now, Chris Golightly has to wait for two years to be able to try again for American Idol because he made it to the top 46 this year.

Idol has really stunk it up in a few spots the last few seasons. Extending the "Hollywood week" cut-down shows into a long, drawn out anti-climactic goo and extending the dial in eliminations to a round of 24. It lets in those fringe singers who have no business being there in the first place and then we have to deal with garbage like what we had last week.

When the ship inevitably sinks, they will have no one to blame but themselves.

crystal bowersox-sang "give me one reason" & played electric guitar on it, which i thought was cool. sang great. i could definately see myself enjoying her music on the radio.

did anyone watch? all i have to say is that lacey brown deserved to get booted off. her version of "ruby tuesday" wasn't good at all.

I watched. Siobhan Magnus was amazing. I was just flat out in awe of her voice. Now that the lesser singers are getting phased out, it is becoming obvious that there are four or five of these folks that are really talented.

The singing was incredible. The interesting-factor was through the roof. She's by and away my favorite on the show (probably from all seasons) because shes just weird. It's a genuine, all-natural weirdness that makes her interesting. They tried to compare her to Adam Lambert, but that was a serious disservice because she doesn't try to be odd, she just is.

I thought Siobhan's torch-song intro/off-key scream arrangement was awful--and not sung all that well. Her voice is OK, but that just didn't work at all, and didn't do the song any justice. Actually, the whole night was a big bucket of FAIL. I hope it's the last time they try to shoehorn the Stones catalog into the show.

I keep watching to see if any of them can impress, but so far, not good. Bowersox and the big trainer dude know how to perform on a stage, but even they're just average in this format. I guess Simon's getting out at the right time...or maybe a year too late.

I thought Crystal was great and Siobhan was so-so, but better than the last few weeks. Her screaming at the end of each song is getting annoying, especially when it is a bad scream like last week. The competition looks to me like it will come down to Crystal, Siobhan, and Big Mike.

Tonight was R&B night and Usher mentored. I love me some Usher. :D

LEE was the best of the night for me. He has a very radio friendly voice, but what he lacks has always been confidence. Tonight he showed his stuff and he was brilliant.

Crystal changed it up, wore a dress and played piano, it was aight. I prefer her playing the guitar and not dolled up. But I understand her changing it up.

Siobahn was 1st up to go and she sucked it hard. It was all over the place vocally and the screaming was off pitch. She knew it and looked devastated even before the judges critiqued her.

Andrew, I highly dislike him, but his rendition of Chris Brown's Forever was good. However, I agree with Simon that his personality is boring.

Didi Tim and Katie are my predictions for B3 w/ Tim going home.

The show stinks. While Randy kara and Simon may have some skins on the wall, they have lost their musical ear trying to be whatever it is they are trying to be on this show.

And if Ellen could ever get one complete coherent sentence out of her mouth it would be a miracle of God.

I appreciate Simon for his honesty. I can't help but wonder what he thinks of some of the acts they book to perform. His honest opinion. For instance, last year that thing Lady Gaga performed. The stage show was interesting. Her singing sucked.

Tonight Usher performed. The stage show was fun and the choreography was fascinating. His singing sucked.

Diddy performed just now. One hell of a visual show. His singing sucked.

You can't tell me that if any of the contestants did these exact performances and sang that badly that Simon doesn't mock the hell out of them. Yet because these stars are already established they get a free pass and aren't judged.

I wonder if he is a hypocrite and loves these vocals? I can't help it.

The girl who allegedly sings better than Taylor Swift goes home. Shocking.

'American Idol' Top 10 Results: What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted Didi

Posted Wed Mar 31, 2010 7:44pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in

On Wednesday night's "Clash of the Titans" infomercial--oops, I mean Wednesday night's "American Idol" results show--in between blatant plugs for the CGI flick, there was a whole lot of clashing of another sort. For instance, Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell engaged in a clash of the titanic egos. ("You are really getting on my nerves," Simon barked at Ryan at one point.) Also, Michael Lynche clipped a clashing pink ponytail hair extension to his bald head in some sort of odd display of allegiance to at-risk contestant Siobhan Magnus. And then there were apparently a few clashing opinions behind the judging table, as the panelists went through the miming motions, pretending to argue over whether to grant the all-important Judges' Save to troubled contestant Didi Benami.

See, while Siobhan was safe despite her shaky performance this week--and she sobbed with relief upon hearing the good news--in the end it was Didi who was sobbing (as usual), when she learned she was in the bottom three with usual suspects Tim Urban and Katie Stevens. And the thin-skinned, heart-sleeved songstress became even more emotional once she found out she in fact had received the fewest votes of the week.

Didi was probably the first eliminated Season 9 contestant who had a real shot at earning the Judges' Save. (Earlier in the season, the judges absolutely adored her--especially Kara DioGuardi, who co-penned Didi's Hollywood Week audition song "Terrified.") So Didi took her challenge seriously and wisely avoided reprising Tuesday's disastrous "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" performance; instead, she crooned Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon," her best song of this season. And she gave it her all. Simon rightfully told her it was "a million times better than what you did last night," but his kind words were quickly accompanied by his trademark eyeroll and the cut-to-the-chase quip, "Didi, it's bad news, sweetheart. We're not going to save you."
Then poor Didi exited the show exactly the same way she came in: crying buckets upon buckets of tears. The girl made Brooke White look stoic. It was a bummer end to a somewhat bummer week in an overall bummer season, but it wasn't exactly a surprise, since Didi had been floundering ever since Season 9's live shows began.

As for the other 57 minutes of filler Wednesday evening, there was no opening AutoTuned singalong number this week. (Don't worry, there was still plenty of group cheese in the form of the weekly Ford music video, this time soundtracked by "Kung Fu Fighting" and featuring the top 10 in unflattering Chinese-restaurant-waitstaff uniforms.) But Season 2 champ Ruben Studdard was back, reminding all of the top 10 just where their careers might be headed in seven or so years. After Roooooben sang some song from his (not-released by-BMG-Records) latest album, he met his doppelganger and natural successor Michael Lynche, at which point Ryan awkwardly solicited diet and fitness tips from Michael (a personal trainer) for the portly Velvet Teddy Bear. (Ruben has, granted, lost a lot of weight, but he still has a ways to go.) No, that wasn't awkward at all.
Then Ruben announced he's hitting the road this summer with his former rival, Clay Aiken, on what will somewhat misleadingly be titled The Timeless Tour. Gulp. Yes, that trek will probably be more entertaining than the Idols Live Tour at this rate, but still.
Big Mike, consider this your warning: This could be your future. You could very well be touring with Casey James in 2017. Or Didi, you may be teaming with Katie Stevens on a tour of what will tactfully be described as "midsize venues." Enjoy your "Idol" ride while it lasts, kids. Showbiz is tough.
Anyway, then Usher performed his non-hit "OMG" with will.i.am, and Diddy performed with his new group Dirty Money, and both sadly revealed that their non-AutoTuned live voices ain't much better than, say, Haeley Vaughn's. Which begs the question...when is "American Idol" just going to have the theme AutoTune Night, already? T-Pain could be the mentor and everyone, even Tim Urban, would sound amazing talkboxing their way through robot-pop songs like "Believe" by Cher and "One More Time" by Daft Punk. After all, "American Idol" is already employing AutoTune to hilarious effect on all those group songs, so why shouldn't the producers really go for it?

Actually, it turns out next week's theme will be tunes from the Lennon/McCartney songbook--which strikes fear deep into my heart, since I am still waking up in nightsweats after witnessing Kristy Lee Cook's mangling of "Eight Days a Week" two seasons ago. It's too bad Didi didn't stick around another week; she's one of the contestants this year who I think could have done a fab job with a Fab Four song like "Blackbird" or "Norwegian Wood." Oh well.

Parker out.

his version of sweet love was so awful, i had to hit the mute button on my remote control.

Like Randy said, and to give credit to him, his singing was no pitch. The problem is he's boring, and he seems so artificial, and his facial expressions when given good (rare) or bad comments is a reflection of this.

He must have the lives of a cat, because I think he should have "died" long ago, while Alex Lambert should have been at least in the top ten. Inexperienced, lacking confidence, but good potential.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qynr0zJiICY

Crystal, so far, is definitely the best out of the bunch. Lee is good, and so is Casey. Garcia finally lived up to his ability.

IMO, this week definitely had some of the best performances for the group as a whole.

By the way, the judges often times give the most contradictory advice. At least Paula had the excuse of being under the influence of something.

Man I can't believe Tim Urban is still in it. I agree that Didi was bad last week but she has ten times the potential that Tim has. He has got to go next week, then Katie the week after.

Lee was just kind of in the background and hadn't stood out but this week he was pretty good. IMO Crystal is still the best but Lee jumped there with her and Mike. Siobhan is just annoying, I'm sick of hearing her screech.

I haven't been that big of a Casey fan but he was great last night. Another solid performance from Crystal. I don't know what the judges were listening too but I though that Tim was once again terrible. I hope it's Tim's week to leave.

Behold the Moe Howard of Taiwan. Pretty good voice for a kid.

I have no idea who the gal in the tight black outfit was, but she has a great body and a very pretty face. I hated the song though.

These stage shows are elaborate as anything you will ever see, but it isn't about music any more. That's why I am not a fan.

Ya, I thought the song was terrible and the performance was extremely boring.

I can't believe that Mike was the loser. Wow, Tim definitely needs to go and he wasn't even in the bottom 3.

Thanks to the power of TiVo, I cut that show down to ten minutes of viewing time and did not watch the Rihanna performance at all. Fast Forward rocks! Didn't see Big Mike getting the bottom vote at all.

ok, i got a question for everyone.

what do all you think of adam lambert(season 8 runner-up)being a mentor to this season's contestants this week? me personally, i think it's dumb because the guy hasn't been around for a long period of time & his album isn't doing great despite one single getting a fair amount of radio airplay.

I know most music people get turned off by the large hordes that root for talentless jokes like Taylor Hicks and Sanjaya, but there's not another show on television with such a focus on musical talent, and you just have to deal with the "rough edges" that are necessary to bring in the massive audiences.

I'm sorry, but you're completely wrong. American Idol doesn't focus on musical talent. they focus on potential vocal ability and image. do you really think the winners get to write their own songs? REALLY!?! NO!!!

with that said, the best thing to happen to Chris Daughtry is to not win American Idol. some other label picked him up and he got to write most of his own songs. who remembers who beat Daughtry? nobody. why? because Daughtry's career has been MUCH better.

I've written a ton of music, I can sing, I can play drums, I can play guitar...and I still think American Idol is terrible...

I've never wanted to try out.

a record deal shouldn't be won in a contest.

any thoughts on tonight's show?

Andrew has GOT to go home. He was horrible. Aaron is probably not too far behind. Siobahn has been ruined by the judges ever since they told her to lay off of the high notes, so she might be in danger as well.

Sooner or later, either Casey James or Lee Dewyze will be voted out because they are almost the same style of singer. It might be Casey considering Lee has been much better the last few weeks.

Crystal is mucho talented. I thought the others did enough to most likely pass through.
