Former Eagles All-Pro, CBS announcer Brookshier dies

PHILADELPHIA -- Former Philadelphia Eagles star Tom Brookshier has died at 78.

The Eagles said he had cancer and died Friday night.

Brookshier was an All-Pro defensive back who played on the Eagles' 1960 championship team. He had 20 interceptions in seven seasons with the team, earning All-Pro honors in 1959 and 1960.

After he retired, Brookshier announced NFL games for CBS. He is one of seven Eagles to have his number retired.

Very sad, brings back memories. Honestly I would have thought Summerall would go first. The demise of Brookshire was due to or caused or coincided with the rise of Madden, which was a shame. I always thought Madden was awful. I know most disgaree.

I grew up with Pat and Tom doing the games. They were like part of my family on Sundays. Very sad.

He was one of only a handful of New Mexicans to make it to the NFL. He was from Roswell.

watching the boys with him and pat calling the game are some of my best memories. God has a great play by play man now.

Brookshier was unfairly bashed for his Duane Thomas post-game Super Bowl interview, when Duane didn't want to participate and Tom didn't know exactly what to do, got a little flustered if I remember.

Man have times changed.

On The Ticket's "Bad Radio" show a year or so ago, they replayed some old post-game locker room player interviews. (I guess these were NFL Network replays, with Brookshier if I remember.) ...

The questions were so in keeping with the late 60s-70s (a good thing IMO). They weren't questions pertinent to game action like nowadays. ... Instead they nearly all were like: "Are you going out tonight and find some fine ladies?" (I'm not kidding) and "You guys are going to do some mad partying and drinking tonight?" (to paraphrase). Funny stuff.

Loved that show in the late 60's early 70's. Had the cheesiest set ever. Looked like they were doing the show in somebodies basement on cable access.

Brookshier and Summerall established a standard that has probably seen it's last days. They were as classy a duo as has ever been seen in professional sport. They believed that the game was about the players, not about themselves. Joe Buck would be wise to look back at those broadcasts.
