I get slightly ill just thinking about the Folk story. That was one guy I thought we could count on for the next 8-10 years, but the injury really affected him.
Sad.

Still think the whole situation seems fishy.

I don't know why Dallas didn't IR him or at the least resign him after the season.

I think this team knows more about the problem then they are letting on.

Agreed. Something seems odd.

I thought we were keeping him on the payroll for awhile:confused: to see if he could come out of his slump.

I think he's going to have a good 2010.

Just a feelin.;)

I have a soft spot in my heart for this guy. I think the team should still try to work with him.

Shoot, he's gonna get signed by the Giants and be the best kicker in the NFL here in a year. It's karma, I can see it happening.

They couldnt IR him because he was never on the injury list last season.

I was hoping they would bring him back as well after the off season, but maybe your right in that they know more about his injury than everyone else. All i know is i was worried last year about him coming back from that hip surgery...i was right unfortunately.

I wonder how that new stadium will affect kickers in NY. If it is anything like the Meadowlands I'm not going to be to concerned with Folk becoming the best kicker in the league.

They could IR him. Make something up. Say he's going back to have another procedure done on the hip. Give it the good old "Cleaning up scar tissue".

I am leary of him going to the Giants and then finding himself and Haunting us.

Me too. Held out hope we'd have him back. :(

This makes me sad.

I don't. I think Jerry was burned badly by Vanderjerk and is back to his "we'll get a kicker on the cheap because they don't matter" attitude he used to have. I think they simply gave up on Folk and are looking to move on because the trust factor is gone. They can't take the chance that he looks good enough in camp to make the team and then falls apart again. It's disappointing to me because I wanted to see what he could do after some time off and a little training. I will hate it if he becomes the giants kicker.

Nick Folk still deserves another shot at the job IMO.. His numbers are not too shabby..

I agree, I thought it was very strange they just outright released him. I thought putting him on IR and letting him try to fix his problems during the offseason was the best option. Maybe the guy was perfectly healthy and they had done all the physical workups on him and it was just his mind wasn't right.... His kicking psyche might be irreparably damaged and the Boys know it.... Who knows, I wish he was still on the team and kicking at his old standard but o well.

For the last time. Per Jerry after they cut Folk.....You can not fake IR. You can not just make something up. The NFL verifies injuries and if there are any infractions you could be subject to draft pick and monetary penalties.

Per Mickey, Folk never liked having two kickers on the roster and it effected him mentally.

Yeah, because we've had such success with them lately. Good kickers are a dime a dozen.

/sarcasm.

I agree with most in this thread. Not sure why we handled this the way we did. This is a guy, who, as a rookie (if memory serves) nailed two clutch back to back 53 yarders with the game on the line against Buffalo. He was a pro-bowler.

Why give up on him when we already knew his off season surgery could've been the reason his head wasn't on straight.

I don't agree with the whole "his confidence is shot" idea. The kid was mentally tough. After he kicked that first 53 yarder - in Buffalo no less, and it turned out the coach called time out, Folk told the team he didn't care and that he'd just make it again (paraphrasing, of course).

It makes zero sense to me that we release him outright when we have a gaping whole on the roster.

I hope this doesn't come back to bite us - but I'm afraid it likely will.

I will say - living in the Northern Jersey - the stadium is designed differently from the old one.

In that the upper deck is about 50 foot higher and is set as an oval on top - where the lights are positioned. The ols stadiun was not as high up and there were large gaps in the areas where the lights are positioned.

This could help cut the wind down in the stadium.

But time will tell.... It's coming soon.

I agree. I think Nick is a very good FG kicker who just had a bad year. When looking at most current kickers in the league you will find the vast majority had bad years but were able to rebound.
