Sorry if repost.

Q: How can you drop Earl Thomas out of the first round on your last mock? You're completely off the mark on this one, Mel.

-- Chris B. (Austin, Tex.)

A: For one, I've always liked Earl Thomas and have been talking about him for a while. I've had him on my Big Board, and have added him to the Board once more. But this is a big week for Thomas, and I'm not necessarily talking about what he does in Indy, but what happens when he's getting those measurements done. It's remarkable how much you think you know about a guy -- and I talk to so many people and get piles of opinions and reports -- and there's still no exact consensus on a guy's size. Thomas has the kind of size for which people wonder if he's even a legit 5-10 -- he could be a little shorter -- or anything more than 195 pounds. Bottom line, that concerns scouts, and the mock is there to reflect where the market on a guy meets the needs of teams.

With Thomas' size, durability is a concern. In the NFL, you need a guy who can be physical, and at less than 200 pounds, doing things like handling big receivers and supporting the run can become question marks. His strengths? He's the complete package in terms of performance, particularly in coverage. He's like a cornerback: He reads eyes well, has great ball skills and gets great breaks on the ball. He's also at his best in big games. If he was naturally bigger, you're talking about a potential top-10 pick, but it's a fine line. I think he can land in the top 25, but I know other scouts and team personnel people who could see him fall safely into the second round, and you can't ignore that. I've also heard people say, "Well, Eric Berry isn't much bigger." But Eric Berry IS bigger, has shown he's comfortable in a physical game and has played longer with more reps. His physicality in regard to his size is far less a question, at least at this stage. And yes, Indy can change things.

Considering that Earl Thomas measured in at 5'10 and 208 LBs, Kiper will move Earl Thomas back up

You would think so since the word he heard about him being less than both of those was off.

Wow 208? Thats surprising.

Even if Thomas fails at safety you are getting a guy that could potentially be a Mike Jenkins type corner.

Maybe i'm missing something here.

I keep hearing about Thomas' size being an issue to playing FS in the NFL but Ed Reed is listed at 5' 11 and 200 lbs and Polamalu is 5'10 and 207 lbs.

Why is it an issue for Thomas when arguably the two best free safeties in the NFL are about the same size as he is?

I would love for his size to be an issue so that he could slip to our spot. I think at times Kiper over analyzes a player as well as over hypes others

If ET gets past Houston at #20, we have to move up to draft him. This would be an awesome pick for us.

Not slipping on the RS12 top 27 board.

he's not falling past philly at 24. And if zona is releasing rolle, dont you think there in a market for a FS?

That 208 may not be a good number if he bulked up for weigh-ins and lost speed and agility.

That crossed my mind. I was thinking he played at approx. 200 and was a bit faster than he timed. Not sure though.

They've got needs other than safety, but it's a possibility they take him, sure.

Well if he hits a 4.4 in the 40 I dont see how we will be able to get him anyways.

His range is incredible and a 4.4 would just validate it for NFL teams.

Even if he runs in the low 4.5's I still doubt we can get him. I would love to have him slip though.

Let him slide to 27 and we can watch the cam of Jerry and crew slapping high fives and shaking hands at their luck.

Troy Polamalu 5'10" 203

Also, wasn't Thomas Everett 5'9" or 5'10"?

Thomas makes plays, I'd take a risk on his size for his ability.

Earl Thomas is a beast, period.

At one point the best 3 safeties in football were Ed Reed, Troy Bighair and Bob the midget Sanders. Color me unconcerned about height at Safety.

Cowboy fans will be too busy trying to cover their laps because they get embarrassed. Thomas is a top 15 player.

I agree. One way they overcome it is by being in the right spot at the right time and being in good position to make plays on the ball

I'm watch NFLN right now and Mayock is sloberring all over Thomas. Saying to know put him at corner, playing him as safety is what makes him special because of his ballhawking abilities.

Because it's Mel Kiper, and it's the draft. Nobody just looks at the most telling stat: "can he play?"

They poke and prod and talk about how his 40-time in shorts and track shoes at 4.32 is so much slower than some other guy at 4.343.

Put up 21 on the bench.

If he fell to us, I'm sure Jurasek could take care of any physical deficiencies. This kid can flat out play.
