Earl Thomas-DB- Player Mar. 1 - 3:27 pm et

Texas S Earl Thomas posted 21 reps of 225 pounds on the Combine bench press Monday.

Other totals of note: Boise State CB Kyle Wilson (25), Michigan CB Donovan Warren (12), USC S Taylor Mays (24) and Florida State S Myron Rolle (21). Amid question marks about his strength and size, Thomas showed up to Indianapolis much bigger than expected and outdid both Eric Berry and Joe Haden on the bench. Thomas is also likely to tear up the forty on Tuesday.

Joe Haden-DB- Player Mar. 1 - 2:37 pm et

Florida CB Joe Haden had 18 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press at the Scouting Combine Monday.

Tennessee S Eric Berry, competing with Haden and possibly Texas S Earl Thomas to be the first defensive back off the board, had 19 reps of 225. Haden's bench press was impressive, but his forty time is more crucial. The DBs run on Tuesday, and there is speculation that Haden may not best 4.5.

24 doesn't sound too bad. I'm interested in seeing what he runs. I'm not going to doubt his strength. I think it's just a good performance by Wilson, who's one of my favorite CBs in this draft.

I'd take Berry and Haden over Thomas still.

Mike Iupati had just 27 reps and I don't think anyone is questioning his strength. And he has around 100lbs on Mays.

The fact is both of them have some of the longer arm lengths at their positions.

Mays arm length 34 inches (longest)
Iupati 34 3/4 (longest for OG)

Fact is the bench favors players with shorter arms because they don't have to push the bar as far.

Techinically seeing how many times you can rep 225 isn't even muscle strength for these guys, it's muscle endurance. It is pretty funny though to look at, Stephen McGee having the same amount of reps last year as Taylor Mays.

I could say the same thing.. mccluster posted 20 reps. So are you telling me its normal for Mays, the man that everyone is boosting about in terms of strength, workout warrior etc to have 24 reps at 230 pounds which is only 4 more then a 170 pound man?

What are you arguing? Yes, it's normal for Mays to put up 24 reps. He certainly didn't hurt everyone's opinion of him. Bench press isn't the sole indicator of strength.

Also, you haven't addressed the arm length comment. Long arms do hurt you on the bench press. I've lifted for a long time and I can bench more than a lot of guys that I know are stronger than me because I have short arms that were made for the bench.

Please show me someone claiming Mays is one of the strongest players in college football. Just one please. Shouldn't be hard because "everyone" is "boasting about his strength".

Again, 330lb Iupati had only a few reps more than Mays despite being 100lbs more than him. Are you questioning his strength too?

For comparison's sake, Roy Willy who most people would agree was a pretty stong S coming out of college, benched 225 just 13 times. Mays putting up 24 reps with 36 (edit 34) inch long arms is not "brutal" period. Saying so is dumb.

And I am not a fan of Mays at all. I wouldn't draft him. He seems like Roy Willy 2.0.

Agree 100 percent with this.

Roy Willy had an extremely strong lower body and it's the reason why when he hit someone, he lowered the boom on their ***.

Dexter McCluster - 172lbs - 20 reps

LeGarrette Blount - 241lbs - 19 reps
Chris Brown - 210lbs - 17 reps
Anthony Dixon - 233lbs - 15 reps
Ryan Matthews - 218lbs - 19 reps
James Starks - 218lbs - 15 reps

Only 3 WR's were able to manage 20 reps. None were able to get more than 20 reps. And only 3 of these WR's weighed less than 186lbs.

As someone else stated, bench is more about muscle endurance more than raw strength.

I know it looks like I'm defending my boy.. but Mays knocking out 24 reps and Wilson knocking out 25 isn't a negative on Mays. It is incredibly positive on Wilson though.

For those who don't understand arm length's effect on this particular test, you simply aren't paying attention. If you watch the combine or even the combine highlights, the analysts talk about it the whole time.

Also impressive was Russell Okung, who knocked out 38 reps with very long arms. The question marks on him were his strength and his weight and he put an end to those with that performance.

why the **** would I find a link that says that? where did I say he's the strongest player in college football? *** are you talking about. My point is everyone is putting this guy on a pedestal, in terms of his workouts, physique. I just read a couple of your posts to this thread, and decided I'd go check out your profile... I did so because I thought, by your "debating" style, that you might be about 16... imagine my surprise when I found out you're 38, and a freakin' lawyer...

Most lawyers I know, know the difference between "your", and "you're", and most can phrase an argument without having to rely on the cuss filter bleeping out the profanity...

Next, permit me to observe that the two links you found, both actually reference the SAME quote... and both articles are over a year old... and both come from his head coach, who's obviously trying to pump up his player in the media...

So I don't know what you think you proved here, other than ONE source, who has an agenda, made a claim about how strong he is (and if I read this thread correctly, he DID put up the second best bench numbers among all the DBs, one less than Kyle Wilson)...

Just to be clear, I'm no Mays fan, and don't want him on the Cowboys... I'm just pointing out that you need to grow up, that you get all bent out of shape every time somebody DARES to disagree with you... I'm also pointing out that by DB standards, Mays is pretty strong...

I ask you, is it really necessary to be a vulgar jerk when you engage in debate?? Sarcasm I can appreciate, but the earlier poster is right, you might be in serious need of a temp ban...

You must be a VERY bad lawyer...

Quote 2, from an article dated 12/17/08 (13 days later):

Carroll said. "He's the biggest, strongest, fastest guy that you're going to find. His numbers are enormous. That's nice to have that. But what makes him who he is, he's really a diligent competitor"...

Same source, same EXACT quote... I sure hope you do better research when preparing for trial... :D

Maybe by then, SMU will have a semi-decent football program... it would help if they found some better "part-time scouts"... at least one such current scout seems to be profoundly clueless, and inordinately belligerent when somebody disagrees with him...

You guys are missing the point. Our KICKER is stronger then all of them except Kyle, who he tied.

And there is no way that dudes a lawyer. For a while i thought it might be an alter ego of R2A.

Possibly the single best point made in this entire thread.

I'm not sure when I've ever seen a player bench press another guy during a game.

You aren't seriously dissing the positive affect bench pressing and upper body strength have on football player's game are you?

I played in high-school, at a real small school. We had no lifting program back then (early '80s) and my upper body was pretty weak. I got into lifting in college and my best bench press was like 265. I didn't think that was bad considering my size (175), the fact that I wasn't in structured, pro-instructed training program and I wasn't on 'roids like a lot of people I knew. (And I partied, hard-core, all the time, LOL.)

I went back and played in an alumni football game 10 years after high-school and was totally shocked at how much stronger I was after a few years of lifting. I was easily pushing guys around that used to handle me in high-school. And these were dudes that logged and did construction work, not office workers.

Kyle Wilson, barring injuries, should have a nice NFL career. He will be able to jack up WRs at the LOS and run with nearly any of them when he has to. And he has a good head on his shoulders.

Wilson is going to do his 40 at BSU's pro day. I may have to swing down there and check it out. I think he clocked his fastest 40 at BSU's practice facility last year, a low 4.3 when the Charger's scouts were there.
