Round 1: CB Kyle Wilson, Boise State
Round 2: OT Jason Fox, Miami
Round 3: WR Marty Gilyard, Cincinnati
Round 4: DT Torrell Troup, Central Florida
Round 6: OT Chris Scott, Tennessee (Eric Olsen instead)
Round 7: OT Tony Washington, Abilene Christian
I actually LOVE every pick except the Chris Scott pick, where the G/C Eric Olsen from Notre Dame is still on the board. I think Dallas would get the G/C guy to replace Proctor instead of another offensive tackle. If we do not draft a single safety, I'm hoping we add a safety in free agency such as Ryan Clark or Antrel Rolle, while releasing Hamlin.

I'll take that right now. Wilson is my pick at #27, unless ET is there. I'm not crazy about the Fox pick. I'd rather take MCcluster in round 2 and Jerry in round 3.

Tony Washington is Bruce Campbell without the 1st round pricetag. He is incredibly athletic for a lineman.
That isn't the "sexiest" draft in the world but it gives us 4 or 5 guys who would definitely improve our depth. Good mock.

Why would we take a CB in the first and why Gilyard?

Tony Washington will be a 4th round pick by the time the draft rolls around. Worlds of potential for a team with a little time to work with him.

Why would we take a CB in the first...
Because he's the BPA. Newman's no spring chicken. And playing an extra corner instead of a safety in the nickel is the direction things are going.
IMHO, at least.

I agree. Wilson has serious potential as a returner as well. I'm assuming if we draft Wilson, Alan Ball would move to safety full-time.

I would not mind this draft but instead of taken fox in the 2nd I would take Brian Price but I highly doubt that he drops that far.

Well I'm not questioning his ability but spending a 1st rounder on a 4th corner seems a little excessive to me. He could work his way up but for the foreseeable future, the best he'd do here is 3rd CB.

In today's NFL you need 4 corners who can play. It's a passing league right now. Newman when healthy, is a top 20 corner, Jenkins is playing lights out, Scandrick is solid as a #3 but can be pushed, Alan Ball is okay but nothing special. The position could use some upgrading, and if Kyle Wilson is their highest player on the board at #27, I would have no problem with the pick.

Newman is going to be done in 2 years. Wilson will be hopefully polished by then to take over. It's a smart move.

nope, safety is of higher priority than CB

Nobody's debating that, but you have to draft based on value. You cannot throw out the scouting you do all year to put together your draft board just to say, "Hey we need a safety more than a corner." The Cowboys may (and most likely do) have Kyle Wilson rated higher than a safety like Nate Allen. They probably have a late 1st to early 2nd grade on Wilson, and a mid-to late round second grade on Allen. You can't reach for a safety like Allen when you have a higher rated corner like Wilson.

imo kyle wilson is mike jenkins V 2.0. im ok with this mock, not exactly how i would like it to go but this could be pretty close to a BPA mock

"Safety" is just a label we put on a player with certain abilities. If a "safety" covered better he'd be a "corner." There are exceptions to every rule, but...
I'll take Kyle Wilson as my nickel safety.

I love Kyle Wilson, but I just can't see a CB in the first round. We need to get a CB, but I think mid-rounds is where we do it. I'd like to take more of a mid-round project who can give us some depth. Jenkins is a stud, Newman has a couple more years, and Scandrick has looked good. When Newman's gone, I'd be comfortable with Jenkins and Scandrick. We don't need to draft Newman's replacement now, he might already be on the roster.

Hobbout if Wilson replaces Hamlin?
I guess I'm just of the opinion that we'd be better off with a ballhawking cover guy like Wilson playing nickel safety than any "safety" we're likely to have a shot at.

If Iupati is not there and Earl Thomas is gone (both most likely) I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have Kyle Wilson at #27. I think he's got a Mike Jenkins type swagger about him.
Slide Newman to FS for a few years until you can groom or draft his replacement (Alan Ball? Draftee?) and have a Kyle Wilson/Mike Jenkins starting CB duo with Ball/Scandrick in on Nickel and Dime? :droolz:
Obviously a freak-show GM move by me, but hey...anything can happen!

I can envision us drafting a bigger, fast guy in the mid-rounds, one who could take over the LCB spot opposite Jenkins, when Newman moves on, allowing Scandrick to remain as our slot corner.

Not here it doesn't.
We can't pay Newman's contract as a safety and we'd probably want a better tackler and bigger playmaker at FS anyways. He'd be the best cover FS in football to be sure but you'd lose other areas and be paying him as an elite CB to play FS.
Even besides all that the number of CBs who come out and reach 27 that can outperform Newman are few and far between. Jenkins stepped up but he took a year and a half to really get there.

Yeah I wasn't serious - Newman will be one of our staples at CB for at least 3 more years.
