They don't have that much clout these days. Its pretty much a reputation based on antiquated information.

The french needed a bad *** fighting/intelligence force, so they obviously had to get help....hence a "French" unit composed of predominantly foreigners. Essentially mercenaries....and the french pay well.

They aren't usually considered elite.

Naopleon won a ton of battles in the 19th century and it took England and most of Eastern Europe to beat him. HE kicked the crap out of England, Austria, Prussia, Portugal and others for the better part of two decades.

When Great Britain was in a shambles and the USA was just a fledgling society, France was the pre-eminent military and economic power in the world for a couple of centuries. The British overtook them and ran with it until the late 19th or early 20th century when the USA took over.

It'll be interesting to see what happens towards the latter part of this century with the Chinese. America's advantage is immigration of the elite from around the world and it'll be interesting to see if that persists.
