Nice computer, but for that money I would have went with a Mac. Im almost fed up with Windows now. I've been fixing my laptops constantly, though this one has been running for 4 years now, which is the longest lasting laptop I have had.

Actually Windows now is pretty good. Windows 7 compared to Vista is a massive improvement. I've yet to have any major problems with Windows 7. It's too bad you didn't go with the i7 & the 16Gb RAM would have cost you an additional 1k tho :) If you max out that laptop you're looking @ $4k which IMO would be worth it if I had $4k cause a Quad Core laptop w/ 16 Gb RAM and 320Gb solid state HDD would last a long while probably 4-5 years.

in 1 year that laptop that costs $4k now costs $2k.

The most expensive part of the fully loaded one is the i7, RAM, and solid state drive. the i7, 16Gb RAM, and solid state will not drop a considerable amount in a year, maybe two or three but those techs are still considerably expensive now and will continue to be so for a few more years. I don't see those dropping anytime soon since they are the top of the line. Once they come out with better things it will still take a year or two for those to drop down in price.

Dude really? It's hard enough to future proof any computer let alone a laptop. My Core i7 desktop, 12gb of DDR3 memory and a SSD i built myself won't even come close to that laptop in price. But in terms of upgrading capability, its no comparison. Desktops are still easier to upgrade + better performance. Oh I forgot to even mention overclocking. Good luck overclocking a factory built laptop. The only thing a laptop has is portability. In every other category they lose pretty badly.

The current SSDs running sata 2.0 have begun to drop. I think sata 3.0 has speeds up to 350 mb/s, so they will drive down the price of SSDs using the sata 2.0 interface eventually.

Recovery discs are not shipped with computers using the Recovery Manager
HP does not include recovery discs with computers that are shipped with the HP Recovery Manager. You can use Recovery Manager to create a personal set of recovery discs. In the event that the hard drive crashes or the computer system becomes corrupted, you can use the personal recovery discs to restore the system to its original condition.
CAUTION: The HP Recovery Manager allows the creation of only one (1) set of recovery discs, and the discs are unique to the individual PC. The recovery discs cannot be used to restore the operating system to another PC.
Because the personal recovery disc includes only the files needed for your specific computer, you can perform a recovery in less than an hour. See Create a set of operating system recovery discs (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=18703&docname=c01895783#WhenCreate).
If you choose not to make your personal recovery disc, and you order a replacement recovery disc from HP, it will contain information needed for multiple models, and a recovery can take up to four to six hours or more. See HP Notebook PCs - Order Recovery Discs for Windows Vista or XP or Windows 7

Bought my first mac several months ago after just getting sick and tired of PC's breaking. (especially HP's)
It is not humanly possible for me to be delighted with my decision. I've turned to the dark side, and its everything they said it would be and more.

For the price you paid it was a great deal......................................
Very stylish..........good find.
It's not every day you can find a good looking laptop that lacks performance and options for that price.
A laptop is key for mobility so lugging around an external drive makes perfect sense.

only time I would need one is at home.
I also wanted longer battery life (2 6 cell batterys), with 1080p screen (check), that could run current games on med-high status(check), that was not an acer(check), that looked stylish(check), with a chicklet keyboard(check, in my budget($1300), that included 1 year with accidental warranty(check).
I went through around 30 laptops looking for one, and this one fit all my req's, ya I got a good deal since I got everything I wanted without spending more than the money I alloted.

bad analogy because a optical drive is useless, do video games still come via disks for PC? You can download movies. It just makes it heavier. I didnt want it, I didnt get it. I dont see why that should become the vocal point of the thread because I didnt want a optical drive,

So is air conditioning in a car. Especially when you pay $2000 over KBB.
The point is you paid for a optical drive, even in your world you thought you got a good deal you over payed (even with you coupon)
Why not just but a notebook at Wal-Mart have save yourself a couple hundred dollars.
You dont need to act like you dont care after the fact because I'm sure it was on oversight on your part. Return it and get something worth that kind of money because you got ripped off and not just because of the optical drive.

Never heard of the issue if run properly but if you were worried about it you could of gone with the QX9650 which is a cheaper option and benchmarked better then the I7.
Either they way, it's not just the CPU.
I hope your happy with it. I really have nothing else to add.

Don't worry, the slot architecture will set you back here in about 2 years. Though DDR3 is here to stay for a while.
This PC I built back in February of 08 is still nice but has zero upgrade potential. 680i LT SLI Motherboard which won't take anything over c2q and core 2 extreme. (LGA775)
So I've basically gotta grab a new motherboard, new CPU, new ram and since these paired up 8800 GT's will be dinosaurs when I build a new PC at next years tax time, new video cards as well.
I'll probably even want a SSD at that time and hopefully they're much cheaper by then. It's honestly a bad time to build a new PC imo, the new rounds of video cards came out for NVIDIA so ATI and them will be going back and forth for a little bit. I expect to be able to pick up a card that is in the $500-600 range now for a reasonable price come early/mid next year.
