1. San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith QB Utah
With no takers to move down the 49ers take the QB of the future.
2. Miami Dolphins Cedric Benson RB Texas
The Dolphins was also looking to trade down but no takers so they take Benson
3. Cleveland Browns Aaron Rodgers QB Cal
He will replace Garcia in the 2006-2007 season.

6. Tennessee Titans Antrel Rolle CB Miami U.

7. Oakland Raiders Erasmus James DE Wisconsin
The Raiders will use Free agency to get their RB. Look for Shaun Alexander to wear the Silver and Black next year.
8. Arizona Cardinals Adam Jones CB West Virginia
With both Qb’s off the board, the Cardinals take the second need which is the CB position. Look for the Cardinals to trade their second round pick (44th pick) to the Bills for Travis Henry.
9. Washington Redskins Mike Williams WR USC
Look for the Redskins to upgrade the offense in 2005.
10. Detroit Lions Thomas Davis, DS, Georgia

11. Dallas Cowboys Shawne Merriman, OLB-DE, Maryland
This was a hard decision between Johnson and Merriman, but the Boys see Merriman more of Pass rusher than Johnson
12. San Diego Chargers (NYG) Troy Williamson, WR South Carolina
The Chargers desperately needs a WR to stretch the field to take pressure of Tomlinson and Brees.
13. Houston Texans Ronnie Brown, RB Auburn
The Texans are looking to add that Triplets affect with Carr, Johnson and Brown.

18. Minnesota Vikings Carlos Rogers CB Auburn

RB – Juluis Jones
TE – Dan Campbell
TE – Jason Witten

MLB – Dat Nguyen
OLB – Dermarus Ware (1st round pick)
CB – Terence Newman
CB – Ken Lucas (Free Agent Seahawks)
SS – Ernest Shazor (2nd round pick)

Why do people continue to shoehorn RW in the role of FS? I understand he stepped aside for Woodson, but RW is a SS. A STRONG safety! Sheesh...

I'm sorry, bu this is another in a string of unrealistic posts on this subject... I honestly don't mean to be insulting to any of y'all, but you seem to be ignoring altogether the things that Jerry and Bill have been saying... and saying "they've lied to us in the past" wont cut it...
The so-called lies that Jerry has told since he brought Parcells on have not been lies at all, in that he has consistently given himself some wiggle room, saying things along the lines of "unless something comes up that's just too good to pass up"... but when discussing the quarterback situation in the past few weeks, there has been no such equivocation on either of their parts...
So, just like they say they won't draft a CB in the first round (and yes, I know you didn't have them drafting a CB in the first), we should take them seriously when they say they're gonna go with the status quo at quarterback...
Besides, is Bledsoe REALLY an upgrade over Testaverde??
Then there's your two first round draft picks-- I really like both Merriman and Ware, but they're essentially the same player... they're both linebackers who specialize in rushing the passer... somehow, I don't see the Cowboys spending two first round picks on a pass-rushing linebacker/ standup DE...
Pick 20 is WAY to high for Ware, anyway... he's climbing the charts, but he's still likely a 2nd or even a 3rd round pick..
Finally, as others have noted, the Boys badly NEED to get Roy Williams back to SS... he's only mediocre as a FS, because he's deficient in pass coverage... so I see little sense in drafting Shazor...
I think that the Boys have given us some pretty strong clues as to their focus in the upcoming draft by the players they have focused on at the Senior Bowl... seems like they were looking at DEs, DTs, LBs, WRs and OL...
Again, stokee, you strike me as a knowledgeable Cowboys fan-- you certainly seem to have a grasp of the team's weaknesses, but I'd suggest you really ought to pay attention to the smoke signals they're sending up...

My guess is that there will be no trade.
It'll all be a crapshoot and no one really knows what will be offered, if anything, by us or anyone else, but my guess, and it's only a guess, is that we stay right where we are.
I CAN say for certainty that that last sentence was a run on.
Not quite as runny as cbz' nose however.

So then, you are calling Winicki a jerk for saying he thinks one of those picks will be traded?
:)
If this was last year's draft, I'd be more inclined to agree with you because there were many more blue chippers in that draft and we traded out of our spot anyway.
I just can't imagine Jerry and Bill, who see themselves as river boat gamblers, sitting on those two picks.

I do think the top 10 mock draft is very realistic and I expect it to pan out very closely to this. If we're going to with Merriman at pick 1a, we need to drop back a few spots, get another pick somewhere in the draft and take him in the 14-18 range. Same for Ware. I'm a big fan of Shazor but see no reason we'd bring in another SS when we have an all-star there.
I do love the idea of seeing Glover on the end in a 3-4. I think he could really get to the QB if that was the main thing he had to do and we have a NT (Ferguson, Williams, or Hawthorne) plugging the middle and occupying doubleteams.
I like Hartwell but I'd prefer Baxter at CB. We definitely need a RT and there are some to be had in FA as well as the draft. I think we'd be fine if we move Tucker back inside to RG, his natural position and got a new RT. I think he'd be a force at RG where he didn't have to worry as much about edge, speed rushers.

My knowledge of College football is pretty sketchy...
SO, that said, how would you rate the strength of this draft? It certainly seems that it pales in comparison to last year's and that this year's 20th pick would be the equivalent to a mid round second last year.

There are bargains to be had at any time in the draft. To say one draft is stronger than another almost doesn't matter. The key is to take the right person at the right time. For example, we took QC in the 2nd round and might have been able to get him in the 4th. It doesn't matter if that was a strong or weak draft, some believe we screwed the pooch by taking him that early and made it a weak draft for us.
Having said all that, I subscribe to the thinking that the 2nd and 3rd rounds of this draft would be considered the strongest. Take your impact player at #11, trade down the #20 and then we would have 2 2nd and possible 1 3rd round pick. That should give you 4 pretty good players. Unless we start drafting for special teams the first day.

I agree here - I think this is a deep draft. Many don't feel that way but I do.

IMO, if there isn't a "target" player on the value board near our pick - we could easily swap down for extra picks. the problem is dallas has SO MANY areas of need that won't be addressed until at least March 2nd - the draft strategy is kinda blurry. the draft looks pretty deep at LBer and "tweeners".

I like your thinking. If we get good pressure on the QB, Roy and Ernest Shazor become interchangeable.
1st round me be a strecth for Ware, but who knows. He did look good during the Sr. Bowl. Anyway I could live with that. The whole DJ over Merriman debate is troubling. They are two diff players. DJ is a weak side LB, at least that's what most draft reports have him as. Merriman is a Strong LB and a perfect 3-4 OLB. If we stay 4-3, DJ is the perfect playmaker. If we move to a 3-4, Merriman is the perfect playmaker. I don't think DJ skills are suited for the 3-4. The knock on him is his ability to take on blockers. Plus, he is best to blitz up the middle and not speed rush from the corner. I could live with either, depending on what D we run. Each player is best suited for a particular D. You don't draft a player at 11 and try to change him.

You know that might be the best suggestion I've heard so far in '05?
Why, because I would draft 7 special teamers? I just don't understand
Take Nugent in the 1st...............The perfect ST player...he punts, kicks, and holds on PAT.............A three in onener :D

I would like to see us pick up a FS someone like Butler in the 2nd, or the 3rd or late 2nd we will get for trading back with one of our 1st round picks.
And I think we will trade down with one our 1st picks, they traded for the later pick so that one that is actually ours has to be burning a hole in their pockets right now.
Oh yeah :michael: :sarge:

QB – Drew Bledsoe (trade a fifth round pick for him)
RB – Juluis Jones
TE – Dan Campbell
TE – Jason Witten
WR – Terry Glenn
WR – Keyshawn Johnson
LT – Flo Adams
LG – Larry Allen
OC – Al Johnson
RG – Mike Wahle (Free Agent Packers)
RT – Kareem McKenzie (Free Agent Jets)
LDE – Greg Ellis
NT – Jason Ferguson (free Agent Jets)
RDE – Laroi Glover
OLB – Shawne Merriman (1st round pick)
MLB – Ed Hartwell (free Agent Raven)
MLB – Dat Nguyen
OLB – Dermarus Ware (1st round pick)
CB – Terence Newman
CB – Ken Lucas (Free Agent Seahawks)
SS – Ernest Shazor (2nd round pick)
FS – Roy Williams
I'm sorry, but you've got to be kidding to have Greg Ellis and Glover as ends on any 3-4 defense. That would be a big time liability in the running game... I do however like the pick-up idea of Ferguson and especially big LB Hartwell.
Plus we need to get a home-run reciever and a true free safety. Find me a home run WR... Dallas truly needs to find the next "Playmaker".
Good picks for your upgrade OL too...
