I read an article which indicated that the Cowboys have the 2nd lowest payroll in the league. While I knew thwy had plenty of space to spend this upcoming year, that shocked me. What the hell has happened, the Cowboys suddenly have become cheap???? Personally, I hope the checkbook is open, players cost money and Championships cost money too!!! Any coincidence that the Eagles at #2 in payroll make the leap to the Super Bowl after finally signing big name FA's.....

Also, is the kicker from OSU (Nugent) worth a 2nd round pick???? The kid has a killer leg, what an improvement over Cundiff....From what the experts say, he has late 1st, early second round potential!!

He's good, early 2nd may be a stretch. We've got so many holes to fill and kicker probably isn't the biggest.

The difference between the Eagles and Cowboys:

The Eagles were already a contender that needed a couple of players to get over the hump.

They've built a great core thru great coaching and good drafts.
The Cowboys have not.

The Eagles have done an awesome job of evaluating and acquiring talent to fit their respective systems.

We, on the other hand, have wasted valuable time banking on the talents of guys such as Wille Blade, Dat Dude, and Jaquez Reeves.

Their Front office is light years ahead of ours.

The Eagles also recognize their young talent and get them signed to below market deals before the become free agents. Thats something the Cowboys might think about doing for a player like Jason Witten.

In regards to Nugent, I'd say round 3 is a good place for the Cowboys to think about him. But since there is no 3rd round pick there would have to be some sort of trade to add a 3.

I would be not be surprised at all if he goes in the second round.

Why would you do that to a player who is probably coming off his career season and is still young? If anything, you should wait.

If we decide to trade down with our 20 pick, whatever extra 2 or 3 we get, I wouldn't mind taking Nugent.

Reason being is that we could get a stud kicker and not pay a stud kicker price. At least intially.

I like the guy.

the skins usually have a big payroll, the pats usually have a low payroll.your payroll has nothing to do with winning.the cap and the payroll are also different.you cann have a high payroll from signing bonus's and still have a low cap number.the key is developing your picks and then you maintain a low payroll.if you have to go out and buy players your gonna have a high payroll

By saying Cap, I meant the amount of money we have to spend on players, we our like 20 mil under. Thats dead money unless its used. Payroll has a direct effect on how good your team is. Better players make more money!!! The is no team at the top without a payroll that is middle to high. Yeah, we can look at the Skins, high payroll, terrible team, buts thats a case of mismanaging your team's money. My point is that we can not go ahead next year with lofty expectations if we have a payroll tha says bargain basement. While the Eagles model of adding FA's to a solid core is the way to go, Dallas has started to go that way with their latest drafts Roy, TNew, JJ , Al Johnson and Witten, the beginning of a solid core. You advance by adding to that mix. A mixture on no names, the Demps and Wahle's of the world and you go get the prime cut, Jason Ferguson, Ken Lucas, whoever it is you decide is that guy. I would rather try and fail that just sit on my arse!!!! My point is spend the money, you have it, your a top franchise, act like one.

It's not dead money if you don't spend it. The only reason we have 20 mil to spend this year is because we saved some from last year through LTBE incentives. What we don't spend during free agency will go towards extending the contracts of players like Roy and Jason. I think you do what the Vikes did this last year. They built up a core of players in the draft and only added expensive FAs (Winfield) when they were a playoff caliber team and looking to get to the next level.

Dallas is not that good yet and spending top dollars on players that are already out of their rookie contracts may not be the best move at this point. Besides we have a lot of young talent to evaluate on our team and major signings will just retard that opertunity to see what we have.

Having said that I do think their are positions where we don't have much young talent and I'd rather not have to draft... But they shouldn't cost top dollar in FA as they aren't "Skill" positions. NT, FS, OG (Maybe)....

Dead money, Cap, Payroll....whatever....Yeah we need to sign guys to extensions (Witten/Roy), but we also need to get some players via FA, in todays NFL your only a year away!!! Spend it, please!!!

If you add Lucas, Porter and Demps, your top picks etc....you are a playoff team. C'mon, its the NFC!!!

once we are into the season and see just how much cap space is left we will sign soe extensions to back load the money like we did with ellis a couple of years ago.

I don't think I agree with the "one year away" stance. I don't see any teams in the top 4 that were one year away. Find me one team that either doesn't have the best offense in the league or doesn't have at least 3 or 4 1rst and 2nd round pics in their front seven that is a real contender in the NFL. It won't be the Eagles or the Pats.

I don't mind spending a big chunk of the FA money (say around 10 mil) to perhaps find a starter or two at important positions, but you aren't going to fix the team in one year by spending your only leverage for the next three. I'd rather have an incremental improvement that leads us to a consitently strong team than to blow it all in one year and end up like the Panthers.

definitely worth a 2nd round pick....if you end up with one of the 5 top kickers in the league, you will almost always have a guy who has more impact on your w-l record than most guys taken in round 2.

That said, I'd love to acquire a 3rd and somehow steal him at the top of that round.

In Oakland, they used a top pick on Janokowski, and no one wants that pick back...he's flakey, but a great kicker.

"Ted" Nugent might be worth a 2nd but NO KICKER is...

4th maybe...Nothing higher...

I might vomit if Dallas drafts a kicker on the first day of the draft.
