Archie comics is going to have its first openly gay character, Kevin Kellner.
He will make his first appearance in Veronica 202 coming out (no pun intended) in September 2010.
I guess it reflects the times but I never expected Archie to have a gay character. Hell, they have few minorities, Chuck Clayton, his dad and his girlfriend are the only ones that come to mind.
I suspect a crapstorm will arise out of this decision by Archie Comics Inc.

Why it wouldnt be the first gay comic character. Maybe in the Archies Comics, but you know, if people never made a big deal otu of it, it wouldnt be a big deal.

Well you know Archie stands for good old fashioned family values, so I am surprised there will be such a character.
I am not opposed to him, just more shocked.
Then again, most reading likely won't know what gay means.

Ahhh, well i was just wondering. Well if the younger kids read it, sure they might know, but people with agenda do will see lots of problems with it.

It's not the first gay character...just first openly gay character.
From Chasing Amy:
BANKY
Archie, alright! Archie and the
Riverdale gang were a pure and fun-
lovin' bunch. You can't find
dysfunction in those comics, because
they were just flat out wholesome.
HOOPER
Archie and Jughead were lovers.
(sips his drink)
BANKY
Shut the **** up.
HOOPER
It's true. Archie was the ***** and
Jughead was the butch - that's why
Jughead wears that crown-looking hat
all the time: he the king, of queen
Archie's world.
BANKY
Man, I feel a hate-crime coming on
HOLDEN
He's got a point. Archie never did
settle on Betty or Veronica.
BANKY
Because he wanted them both at the
same time, you *******s! He never
chose one because he was trying to get
both of them into a three-way!
HOOPER
(pulls out a dollar and hands
it to Banky)
Here. I want you to go down to the
corner store and buy yourself a clue.
Go on.
BANKY
Eat it. Urkel.
HOOPER
I told you to watch it with that Urkel
****. Face it, girl - Archie's a
sister.
BANKY
(getting up; to Hooper)
That's it. You.
HOOPER
Moi?
BANKY
You are marching back across the
street with me, and we're going to
pick up a **** load of Archie books, I
am going to prove to you - beyond the
shadow of a doubt that Archie was all
about *****. Come on.
HOOPER
(sliding out of booth)
This boy is conflicted, I shall play
mother-therapist for him.
And later...
BANKY
You’re insane. Archie is not ****ing
Mister Weatherbee!
HOOPER
Deny, deny, deny.
(to Holden)
Where’s Alyssa?
BANKY
(off comic)
He’s just offering to help Archie with
his homework!
HOOPER
Read between the lines.

One of my co-workers reads Archie at work, so one day when I was bored I picked it up. And I'll tell you. What a ****ty comic series.
Although Archie could bang 2 chicks at the same time. So props to him.

Jughead isn't gay. He's just more interested in food than anything else.
That said, I always thought Big Ethel was a lesbo.

I really don't know why it should...
I mean, most fans of the Archie comic books are gay... it's a proven scientific fact...

Why would sexual preference ever be relevant in a comic book?

Gooood question. It's not like there's a large "gay teens who read comic books" market to tap.

Interesting. This can't be the first gay character to ever be introduced in a Comic. What about the Ambigously Gay Duo?

NEW YORK (AP) - Riverdale High is getting its first gay character.
Archie Comics announced Thursday that in an issue out Sept. 1, the long-running comic will introduce its first "openly gay" character, Kevin Keller.
The strapping blond will defeat Jughead in a burger eating contest, win the affection of Veronica and wrestle over how to gently rebuff her flirtations.
Jon Goldwater, co-CEO of Archie Comics, says the introduction of Kevin is "about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive."
Kevin sure can pack away the meat!

Probably in the minds of those that own Archie now they thought that this would make it "Relevant" and pump up interest. No other reason- it always comes down to money.

Ethel isn't lesbian, she's just ugly and cannot get a date.
Midge was hotter than both Betty and Veronica. Too bad she was stuck like glue to retarded Big Moose.

I believe it was Northstar from Alpha Flight. They tried to mkae a big deal of it but it went no where.
Northstar (Jean-Paul Beaubier) is a fictional character (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/Character_(arts)), a superhero (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/Superhero) who appears in comic books (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/Comic_book) published by Marvel Comics (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/Marvel_Comics). Through his mutation (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/Mutant_(Marvel_Comics)), Northstar gains superhuman powers, which he uses for the betterment of society. Although originally a member of Alpha Flight (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/Alpha_Flight), a fictional team of Canadian (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/Canada) superhumans, Northstar is later portrayed as a member of the X-Men (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/X-Men). He is one of the first openly gay (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/Homosexuality) superheroes in American comic books (http://cowboyszone.com/wiki/American_comic_book).
I had thought one of the Green Lanterns was as well, but it could be wrong.
