Posted an suggestion about spending the 20 mil we have this year beefing up to compete right away. Some have suggested that we are to far off, lets not spend the money, build slowly. While drafting well builds your foundation, FA signings add talent right away if you get the right person. To me it goes hand in hand, you need both. I want the old Cowboys back, aggressive in signing talent, high profile and mid range. Get those 2-3 guys who WILL make a diffrence. I want to win now, not later, later may never come. Losers wait!!!
Draft well, and add when you can. This is the time, we have solid draft choices (2 #1's and a high #2) and we have 20 mil. That SHOULD get you 7 guys. Ifthey are the right seven, we jump right back up there, only competition is the Eagles, are they really that far away??? Each team is 1 injury from being mediocre, take the shot. I say NOW!!!

Beef up when the beef is available....no one 30 or over, unless it's a lineman.
We have to spend the money in free agency every year, but only on players that will be here awhile.
Not spending the money this season doesn't give you more money next season. You have to acquire players in both the draft and free agency if you hope to compete in the NFL...what you have to watch out for is tying up big future money on guys who are already past their primes...that's when you get into cap problems.

Only spend it on someone who is worth it. Dont buy a player whose expensive if they are on the decline of their career (cough cough eddie george) or someone like that. Only spend the money if it is worth it.

We have the money so I say spend it but spend it wisely. No more of the "over the hill gang". Fill the holes where only a vet. can give you immediate help such as CB, OL, etc..

Eh...start Henson next year, give your two first round picks a year to mature, target 2006.

I don't recall anyone saying we shouldn't use the cap money this year. Not a soul.

well if we had a younger head coach who had patience to win that would be a good plan. we have an older coach who does not have the patience to let a young qb learn on the job and expect to win. we will just have to wait and see what happens. if we are slow at signing free agents in first month then parcells might be willing to let henson learn and let the young draft picks mature. somehow i think that vinny will be our starter next year because he gives us the best chance to win in parcells opinion. i think we will be active in free agency but i do not think we will be signing any big names.

You have to have at least ONE older player on the team. If we use your logic, we'd have to cut you from the message board Pops.

I think you spend it in a couple of different ways. First you try to hit the young quality FA and sign them for multiyear deals and spread the cap hit out over the years. For the older guys, if you have to resort to guys over 30, you try to give them high yearly salaries with little signing bonuses or bonuses spread a couple of years, actually the way we did Wiley and Vinnie.
Although Wiley was a bust his cap hit will not kill us this coming year. Eddie George was the same way. Although he did not turn out to be a good sign or play well, we did not hurt our future.
One last thing. I thought Adam said that unspent money did carry over from 1 year to the next when we were talking about our money under the cap last year - Is that Right?
