Sorry if this was already posted and feel free to kill it, but if he's retiring I think this would be appropriate. Here are mine:
1) Carrying us to the NFC East title vs the Giants with a dislocated shoulder in '93
2) The one man drive in Super Bowl XVIII vs Buffalo
3) 237 yards in a driving rainstorm at Philadelphia on Halloween '93
4) The run on Monday night in the '92 opener leaving Redskins all over the field for a TD
5) Of course, the all time rushing record.
There are so many others I know I missed but these are my favorites. I'm sure you all can help me out with more highlights.

1) Carrying us to the NFC East title vs the Giants with a dislocated shoulder in '93There it is. Number One and, for all the other outstanding Moments he gave us, it's not even close.

I like all of those moments and it is tough to top your number one, but there is one performance not many bring up.
In the 1993 NFCCG here in Irving, Norv Turner thought it best to isolate Emmitt on Bill Romanowski of the Niners and have Troy dump short to him early on to set everything up.
And boy, did that work brilliantly.
Aikman hit Emmitt repeatedly in the middle after everyone else cleared out. Poor Romo was juked again and again as Deuce chewed up yardage, setting up three early scores.
That was never really a contest - for several reasons actually. But Emmitt set the tone offensively as he totally dismantled the heart of the Niner defense. It was beautiful. And it was yet another facet of Deuce's greatness that often went overlooked.
Good times.

Thanks. I knew I missed a lot of subtle memories and this is the kind of post I was hoping for.

Love your list. I would also add the season opening game at New York against the Giants. Emmitt took his first handoff of the season and took it all the way for a touchdown. That's one that I always remember when thinking on Emmitt.

Absolutely the best NTex95... that would be it... I would add his last 150 yard effort against the Stinkskins in his last year with the Boys... that would pretty much sum it up.

That was almost my #5 and I would have put it in if I decided not to include the all time record, but how can I not?

I completely agree with your ranking but the Record stands out most in my mind. Irvin going absolutely nuts and Moose giving Emmitt a shoulder to cry on, classic Cowboy stuff. I don't think many of the players now would do that for one another.
Your the man Emmitt!!!

on a monday night against minnesota. was it moss'es rookie year? emmitt was widely rumored to be washed up and ran for like 150 yards before halftime. if he hadn't fractured his hand in the first half he mighta done something really amazing that night. but what he DID was shut up the critics for a while.

I put the record first and his SB drive second. Then the Giants game, the Philly game, and his huge Vikes first half.
Great list!
Oh... it's hard not to put the Giants game first. It gives me chills, but the record came off more than a decade of work, and during the SB drive I knew they had another championship... I'm sitting there saying to myself "They can't stop him, there is nothing they can do... BACK TO BACK!"

1. Being there in person at Sun Devil Stadium on Christmas Day when he scored TD #25 for the season.
2. Walking in the door from work just in time to see Emmitt take it to the house on his first carry against the Giants in the 95 opener.

I was at that game...JUST made it to my seat...I have never seen a RB break so fast in my life...granted, the hole was huge...but Emmitt was at top speed in two steps

Well done...great list....
I think your first two are really the definition of who he was as a RB...heart, courage, and determination.

He would have surely come close to breaking the single game record. He didn't even hurt himself in a pile. He got his finger stuck in a facemask while trying to stiffarm, if my memory serves.

Emmitt had so many great moments...
For those that never saw Dogo's tribute to our RB's... you missed out...
We have certainly been blessed with phenominal RB's...
Think about it... how would other teams like to have this list...
1. Emmitt Smith
2. Tony Dorsett
3. Herschel Walker
4. Don Perkins
5. Calvin Hill
6. Duane Thomas
Man we have had it good...
My favorite Emmitt run is still the one where he reverses field on Monday Night Football vs. the Falcons... then outruns Deion to the endzone...
I always loved that finger in the air when he was home-free...

I remember Dierdorf saying that the Cowboys just sent the 49ers a message taped to a sledgehammer after that play. I wasn't a Dierdorf fan, but I always liked that remark.

He had 2 touchdowns in <30 seconds. Amazing. I always thought that weekend was Walter Payton weekend, because he died the week before. First, the Bears pulled out a miraculous, against all odds, win against Green Bay that weekend. I think Longwell missed a FG or something. Then if Emmitt wouldn't have gotten hurt he may have beaten Walter's single game rushing record (which I think was at ~250 yards and has subsequently been passed by others).

Also, basically in his breakout game - rookie year on Thanksgiving Day vs. the Skins. Deuce finally broke a long one late and juked Darrell Green to the ground, sealing the game with a touchdown.
I do believe the NFL's Fastest Man was introduced to pure greatness that day.

that was the moment i felt like the cowboys DEFINITELY had somebody special in double deuce. running down the left side of the field he flashed green a leg, breaking darrell's ankles, turned it back in and scooted to paydirt. awesome moment of realization for me. glorious moment for emmitt and the team - a portent.

i was there when he broke the record, and it's pretty tough to top that as far as seeing it with my own eyes.

My top 5:
1. Separated Shoulder Game - I've never been as awestruck by a performance as I was that day.
2. Breaking the Record - Didn't have the game televised locally in Tampa so I had to go to a sports bar. Even with all the yelling Bucs fans watching their game...I became the loudest person in the place.
3. SB XXVIII - The Real Drive to begin the 2nd half.
4. The Domination of Philly - While the other 2/3 of the Triplets had their share of troubles against the Eagles. Emmitt seemed to always have big games. I think it was '93 or '94 when he had 200+ yards against them in the rain.

All those previously mentioned are some of my top Emmitt moments. My top moments that I witnessed at Texas Stadium are:
1) Emmitt kneeling on the Star after a touchdown during the 49ers and TO game in '00.
2) Emmitt passing Tony Dorsett for all-time rushing leader for the COWBOYS, it was against the Giants in '98.
3) Emmitt passing Marcus Allen for NFL all-time rushing TD leader against the Redskins in '98.
"I always loved that finger in the air when he was home-free..."
That's an Emmitt trademark that I used to absolutely love. That one finger in the air on his way for a TD, the #1 running back of all time.
He will and he has been missed.

1. I was so happy when we drafted him that it is my #1 moment. I really wanted the Cowboys to get him. Couldn't be happier about a Draft Pick.
2. The Giants game with the separated shoulder to clinch the division. That game was the essence of heart.
3. Breaking the All time rushing record. The Holy Grail of records.
4. Messing up Jimmy's hair after SB XXVII. I waited 15 years for that 3rd title. Him doing that relieved all the built up emotions.
5. Breaking the single season rushing TD record.
