As a singer? He's not. At all. As a guitarist, he's serviceable; as a songwriter he's exceptional. Why he's so impacting? Right place at the right time; a popular slant on a general feeling at that specific moment in time.

It's odd you bring this up because I generally like some of his stuff, despite his voice, but listening to Positively 4th Street in my the car the other day I realized how much of a whining ***** he is in that song. *** is he griping about and how will it transcend that moment? It's the topic of miserable teen girl.

Hurricane is a good song, but also sounds like a lot of complaining far removed from it's social relevance.

In case you want a really great read sometime, here's a link to all his songs, click on a title and you'll get the lyrics. It took me 26 years to appreciate his greatness, but it's never too late to find good music. http://www.bobdylan.com/#/songs

Ever hear Lay Lady Lay? I think he used his voice in different ways depending on the song, but pretty much planned on being a rock/folk singer, not a exceptional vocalist. There's a difference. Some of the most recognizable rock singers are Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Robert Plant, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Scott, David Lee Roth, Jim Hendrix, etc............and I wouldn't exactly call any of them Povarotti.

No I haven't heard that, and he has sounded different on different songs. I can't stand Knocking on Heavens Door, but - and I don't know if maybe it's age - on Things Have Changed, I like his sound. I like the song and his voice on it. It just fits.

Mama You've Been On My Mind is dismal when he sings it, but is fantastic when Jeff Buckley sings it. Like I'd said, great song writer. The song is very good, as is All Along The Watchtower, but I'd much rather hear Jimi sing it, than him.

I have heard the name over the years, but I cant place the type of "music". Who is he?

Never heard of it until you mentioned it. Kind of weird.

No version compares to this; great guitar work and while he isn't a great singer, he 'smokes' Dylan in that sense. :D

I love this version. I wish this SOB didn't die.

I think I may have listened to part of one of his songs once. As I remember I couldn't understand a word he tried to say. I simply fail to understand how people with absoulty no talent become musical icons. But then that expands to all walks of life.

And It's a misconception that I don't like music. But it must actually be "music". ;)

Gotta love Jimi. (oddly enough, I think I like Buddy Guys version of Hey Joe better than Jimi's though.)

I've always been impressed with DMB's take on Watchtower from "Live at Red Rocks".
