On the eve of an announced retirement on Thursday, I thought it would be fun to remember the unreliable, ineffective backups who helped get E all those rushing yards because they had to give him 30+ carries a game.

1.) 1990 Terrence Flagler - 0 yards, 0 carries, TD
I remember his crappy play forced the Cowboys to give into Emmitt's contract demands. He had no stats so I guess he was cut after the preseason. One of Jimmy's bad trades (remember Alonzo Highsmith?) with San Francisco.

2.) 1990 Timmy Smith - 6 yards, 6 carries, 0 TD
Former Super Bowl hero of the Redskins was too slow, fat and lazy to be effective.

3.) 1991 Ricky Blake - 80 yards, 15 carries, 1 TD
Former Arena player I thought had the potential to be the best backup Emmitt ever had. Had speed and was a bruiser, reminded me of Christian Okoye. It would have been fun to watch those 2 play many years together, but he suffered a career ending (hip?) injury.

4.) 1991-1992 Curvin Richards - 180 yards, 51 carries, 1 TD
Cut by Jimmy for being lazy. I think his reputation might have caused Curtis Martin (another Pitt back) to drop in the draft years later.

5.)1991 Tony Boles - 0 yards, 0 carries, 0 TD
Good back in college at Michigan who suffered a major knee injury. Drafted late as a gamble he could recover. Never played in the NFL.

6.)1993 Derrick Lassic - 269 yards, 75 carries, 3 TD
First of a couple of bad running backs drafted from Alabama. Another rotten apple cut by Jimmy after 1 year. His skills were less than average as well.

7.)1993-1994 Lincoln Coleman - 312 yards, 98 carries, 3 TD
Another former Arena guy, but he didn't have the skills of Ricky Blake. A little over 3 yards per carry doesn't get it done in the NFL.

8.) 1993 Derrick Gainer - 29 yards, 9 carries, 0 TD
Former Cleveland back, nothing more than a scrub.

9.) 1994 Blair Thomas - 70 yards, 24 carries, 1 TD
Former #1 pick who tore up his knee and never did much, including his 1 year here.

10.) 1995-1998 Sherman Williams - 1162 yards, 302 carries, 4 TD
Longest stint of all the backups, decent not spectacular. Under 4 yards per carry average, I also think he ran into some trouble.

11.) 1996-1997 Herchel Walker - 103 yards, 16 carries, 1 TD
Even in his 30's I think he would have been better than Sherman Williams. But mainly used as a returner.

12.)1998-2000 Chris Warren - 948 yards, 217 carries, 8 TD
Most effective of all E's backups, a WHOPPING 8 TD's in 3 years! Not bad for being at the end of his career, but complained about playing time (yeah right!)

13.) 1999 Robert Chancey - 57 yards, 14 carries, 0 TD
After one year with limited production he was signed by San Diego and did squat.

14.) 2000-2002 Michael Wiley - 503 yards, 80 carries, 1 TD
Killer average but was only a 3rd down back due to size.

15.)2000-2002 Troy Hambrick - 924 yards, 198 carries, 3 TD
Great as a backup, couldn't hold E's jockstrap as a starter.

Weren't Ricky Blake and Lincoln Coleman former World League players? I remember Ricky played for my favorite team back then. The San Antonio riders. I think Coleman played for them too.

I stand corrected, yes both were World League players before the NFL took over that league. But I do think Blake played in the Arena league as well.

And that list gives additional credance on why we don't need a Lamont Jordan here...

You can't have two "main" backs.

It doesn't work.

It can work. Especially if neither back is one of the greatest of all time.

It can work, but I prefer to have one main back and just a competent back up. Dallas was lucky that Emmitt was just so durable and effective. Julius may be that guy, but after one season he is not. I don't think Dallas needs Jordan, but they need better backups than those listed above.

Lincoln Colemen had one good game ... the Thanksgiving game in the snow.

The snow limited Emmitt's effectiveness. Lincoln's bruising, straight-up running style was perfect for that weather ... esp with Dolphin defenders unable to get a firm grip in the snow.

Wasn't Emmitt injured that game...I thought that was why Lincoln got the carries. I liked Coleman, wonder why he never took on somewhere else.

This thread just highlights how spoiled we all were by the triplets. We were ok with bringing guys like that to backup Emmitt, because Emmitt never let us down. We were ok with having Jason Garrett, Clint Stoerner, Anthony Wright and other guys like that backing up Aikman, because we always thought Aikman would keep recovering from his concussions and back injuries. We were ok with bringing veteran re-treads, Rocket (though I liked him) and Joey, and others to be the #2 next to Mike, until he went down in Philly. Emmitt has lasted the longest, but he's a shell of the RB we had here in Dallas. We got caught with our pants down because we always thought we'd be in the hunt with those three. And that's why we've been wallowing in a state of mediocrity for the last five or so years.

I do think we're going in the right direction, but I think it's gonna take patience. I don't think we're at the level of San Francisco, where they don't even have building blocks to sort out that mess. But before BP was brought in, I do think we were on the fast track to nowhere. We took a step back last year, but I think we're gonna be alright. It didn't take us two years to get into this mess, so I don't think we should've thought it would take two years to get us out of it. I just want to go back to being a perennial contender and I'm willing to give BP the time to figure it out and get us back to that.

Ok those are my thoughts for the day.

Emmitt got injured in the previous game against the Falcons. He had 1 carry for 1 yard that game and was not expected to be available for the Thanksgiving game. Aikman also had missed the Falcon game. Bernie Kosar played and was very ineffective.
