Who is Nash gonna guard?

it all comes down to our defense. if we can guard the 3pt line consistently and limit their fast break points......we will win this series in 5-6. However, if we fail in one or both areas, this thing could go 7.
I say do like in years past. Let Amare go off and get his, but basically shut everyone else down.

Rowdy ..... we go through this every year.
Maybe this is finally the Suns year ...... but if you go by history of these 2 teams the last decade, the Suns will win one or two games and they will all be very close.
Personally its just gravy for here on out to me ..... I did not think the Spurs had enough ammo to compete for another title this year because Duncan looked old earlier this year ...... but they started playing Spurs basketball again.

I agree that its been the typical 5-6. Yeah, this is a great plus for you but then again, the Spurs have always been a playoff team for quite awhile. They remind me of a "waking beast" come playoff time.
I truly believe that this Suns team is very different than before but until a few games have been played, one would have to give the nod to the Spurs beforehand.

Im just going to say this......I do not see the Suns winning in 4 or 6. I do not see them closing out the Spurs in SA. I do however feel the Spurs can win in 5, 6, or 7 games. It will most likely be in 6.
I can kind of see it going the way the Mavs series went.
1-Suns
2-Spurs
3-Spurs
4-Spurs
5-Suns
6-Spurs
but once again, in order for the Spurs to be successful.....minimize turnovers and guard the arc.

The Spurs dont play dirty....they play physical....that being said, yes a few times some Spurs players have been a bit excessive. However, none of those players are on the team anymore.
Dont act like PHX was totally innocent either. Bell was as dirty as they come, just ask Kobe. But he too is gone.

Hos, you are better than that. Why would the NBA rig it so the boring Spurs beat the exciting Suns? They wouldn't. SA is the team that loves to throw pie in the face of Stern...a small market team that goes out and beats up on the big market teams and doesnt care about the NBA ratings.....just OBrien trophies.
BTW, maybe if the Suns played defense half as good as they played offense, they might have won a series from the Spurs since 2003.

One thing I am interested in seeing is how the Spurs handle the pick and roll this time around. In their final meeting of the regular season, the Suns gashed and raped the Spurs defense with the pick and roll. Knowing how great Pop is at making adjustments, I am kind of glad the Suns had such great success in that game.
The two teams are pretty even, when you go position by position. I say the PG position is even. The Spurs get the edge at SG. The SF position is even. The Spurs get the edge at PF. The Suns get the edge at Center. I will give the Spurs the slight edge off the bench, though Frye, Amundson, Barbosa, and Dragic have done quite well for PHX.
The most decisive advantage in this series, and even the Suns fans should be able to acknowledge this, is at Head Coach. Pop is far superior and tons more experienced than Gentry.

Game 1: Suns win in Phoenix 116-104 on Dec. 15, 2009
If you look at the box score of this game you can see that Amare Stoudemire had his way with the Spurs (28 points and 14 rebounds), and Steve Nash was stellar both scoring and dishing (25 points and 13 assists). But the real story of the Phoenix win was the emergence of Goran Dragic, who burst onto the NBA scene, scoring a then-career high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting (4-of-5 from distance) in only 25 minutes.
This game set the tone for Dragic’s season, as he played with confidence and helped fend off the Spurs with seven fourth-quarter points after the Suns pissed away a 20-point lead. Phoenix couldn’t slow Tim Duncan (34 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks), but the Suns held Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili to a combined 6-of-19 shooting and took Game 1 of the season series in convincing fashion.
Slowing down Ginobili and Parker will be the key to the series for the Suns, and they proved that they are capable of doing exactly that in their first meeting.
Game 2: Spurs win in San Antonio 113-110 on Feb. 28
Jason Richardson was 8-of-12 with 20 points going into the final minute of action. And just when it looked like the two-time dunk contest champion was going to tie the game up with a breakaway slam with 41 ticks on the clock, J-Rich botched the gimme and the Spurs took the momentum all the way to a W.
This game will always have an asterisk next to it in the mind of the Suns. After failing to capitalize on such a big opportunity, that 99 times out of a 100 J-Rich throws down with style, it’s hard not to think ‘what if?’ But although the Suns dropped the game late, they played San Antonio tight from the opening tip to the final buzzer, and STAT absolutely exploded for a then-season high 41 points to go along with 12 boards.
The Suns scored a ridiculous 58 points in the paint but struggled to defend San Antonio, as the Spurs shot 50.6 percent and Duncan, Ginobili and Richard Jefferson all went for 20-plus. With the history between these teams in mind, this is the type of back and forth battle that should be expected in almost every game this series.
Game 3: Suns win in Phoenix 112-101 on April 7.
This game was the type of performance that should make Suns fans confident heading into this series. The Suns had so much to play for with the Western Conference playoff race still undecided, and they put the clamps on Duncan and the Spurs, while riding the 29-point performance from STAT.
Despite being out-rebounded by eight and allowing an absurd 20 offensive rebounds, the Suns built their lead to as much as 17, and never allowed Duncan, Ginobili or Parker to get going. When he was on the floor, Dragic did a great job on Ginobili (10 points on 5-of-14 shooting), and the Suns held Duncan to only 14 points and seven rebounds without Robin Lopez.
Parker was also a non-factor with only 10 points in 25 minutes, and the Suns thoroughly dominated San Antonio from start to finish. I have a feeling that the Suns will be watching this game a lot in the next few games, as it is the perfect model of what Phoenix needs to do to take down the Spurs.

You do realize that the 3rd game was Tony's first game back after several weeks of being sidelined with a broken hand. Also, Hill missed the game due to a sprained ankle.
I can assure you that with Parker and Hill both healthy and in game shape, Nash and Dragic will not be able to gash the Spurs D the way they did in that 3rd game.
From what I understand, Lopez is returning for this series. It will be interesting to see how long it takes him to find his groove again.

Stoudamire has been there for all 3 losses, with Nash and Barbosa being there for 2. I could have sworn Hill was there for the last one, but maybe I am wrong. Maybe Hill didn't join the team until the year after that 3rd defeat to the Spurs.
As for the Spurs, the Big 3 are still there. Do miss having Bowen and Horry though.....It was fun watching them get totally under the skin of the Suns players.

It was also a back to back night, and we all know how well SA plays in those.
I'm not sure what you hang your hat on here if you're a Suns fan. It's not like SA hasn't beaten the Suns when they have had home court before, so this isn't the first time the Suns had a "better" year than San Antonio. Yet, the Spurs always seem to find a way.

I only posted that longer thread as some food for thought but it has nothing to do with the post season. I will always state that the Spurs are a post-season team. It doesn't matter if they are the #2 seed or #7. They have been a team to be reckoned with for quite awhile.

Every time his ankle acted up AGAIN, the Magic brass allowed him to shut down with no pressure while they took the Public relations hit. Well if the Spurs would simply make their layups, they win game 1. They missed around 12 layups tonight. But this has been a problem all year, and really for the last couple of years. The Spurs get great looks and get to the basket, only to not be able to convert within 2 ft.

why do people twist words. The Spurs missed a bunch of jumpers and 3s....LOW % SHOTS
The Suns did miss a lot of shots, but also shot a higher %...they also owned the 3pt line. The Suns didnt miss that many layups....at least not near as many as the Spurs.
What is the most frustrating...when the Sun get fouled, they seem to make the basket, and then the FT. When the Spurs get fouled, they seem to miss the basket, and are lucky to make 1 of 2 FTs. If it is Duncan, 0 of 2 FTs.
My beef is with layups. I have been frustrated for the last couple of years, cause the Spurs continue to shoot themselves in the foot cause they cannot seem to convert at point blank range.
So forgive me for holding my team to a certain standard. I dont expect them to make FTs...I dont expect them to make a ton of 3s.....especially with Mason, Bonner, and Jefferson struggling. However, I do expect them to be able to convert a flippin layup.

Oh Goody .... I get to have a rumble with Hos.
There is no way the NBA wanted the Spurs to win that series years ago.
None.
Spurs were just the better team.I forgot all about this thread. Pretty much the same way I forgot about the NBA a few years ago. I don't even know how many years ago it was. I was a Lakers fan. Had no dog in this fight. Hated the Suns, and hated the Spurs. I'd have to say I was rooting for the Spurs because I met several of them when my nephew got married and we stayed at the same Marriott Hotel. Good guys.
I don't care who anyone thinks the NBA wanted to win. Who was more interesting. Who was better ratings. I care that the actions of the NBA fixed the series.
I have not watched an NBA game since that night and I honestly don't know that I ever will again. I wrote to Rod Thorn. He wrote back. He couldn't change my mind. No one else will either. The actions of the NBA sickened me. It still does.
I don't care who wins this series, or the next, or the Championship. That series ruined a game I really loved.

my point is, if the Suns are making their jumpers, especially their 3s and the Spurs are missing their layups....it isnt a going to turn out well for SA.
What the Spurs need to do is cover the arc, which they didnt in game 1. they need to slow down the pick and roll, which they didnt in game 1. they need to play better D, which they did in spurts after the first quarter.
BTW, if you take the last 3 quarters only, the game ends in a tie. That first quarter was the difference in the game. The Spurs need to do a better job of slowing down the Suns early. They were playing catchup the entire game....and just couldnt quite get over the hump in the final moments.

exactly, a scrub at the end of the bench even said they knew the rules and were told before the season and the postseason. not the Spurs fault Amare is an idiot.
btw, Horry got a 2 game suspension for a weak hip check, where Nash basically threw himself into the boards to sell the call.....meanwhile Najera almost beheads Manu and gets no suspension.
The NBA is kind of ridiculous. If a hip check is a 2 game suspension, then what Najera did in 2 consecutive games warrants more than a 2 game suspension. Just be consistent with the punishments and fines....but the NBA isnt. I think that is one thing that frustrates Hos.

With that said, I give major props to the Spurs this series. They played clean and they played with tremendous skill the past few games. They turned it on yet again for a great run so far. Win or go home is the MO and Phoenix just got handed their locker room goods compliments of the entire Spurs. :)
They also do not have the mentality or the smarts to adjust like Pop does for his players. The Spurs were an absolute machine last night and they seemed to have heat seeking missiles for shots. This thread isn't about whining about my team but rather give credit to where credit is due. "With that said, I give major props to the Spurs this series. They played clean and they played with tremendous skill the past few games. They turned it on yet again for a great run so far. Win or go home is the MO and Phoenix just got handed their locker room goods compliments of the entire Spurs.
They also do not have the mentality or the smarts to adjust like Pop does for his players. The Spurs were an absolute machine last night and they seemed to have heat seeking missiles for shots. This thread isn't about whining about my team but rather give credit to where credit is due. Just like in an MMA fight where a true fighter congrats the other guy if he owns him due to the love of the game, I do the same for the Spurs this year. You guys have really outclassed us this series and I can always congratulate a better opponent." Ok Zrin. Let it go. Here's my proof. Well thats a shame.
The stupidity of Amare ruined the game for you.Actually it was the NBA. I don't blame any player for wanting to protect a teammate. That is a natural instinct.
Neither he nor the other guy (Deow or something) got involved. A fine was warranted more than a suspension for the integrity of the game. Integrity was not what the NBA wanted. They wanted to flex their muscles and growl.
Sick.

I am sorry Hos
But the rule is if you come off the bench onto the floor during a fight ...... its an automatic one game suspension.
Been that way for years.
None of the guys on the Spurs bench moved on the court ...... Tim Duncan was already standing ad mid court getting ready to come back in the game ..... he went to grab Horry. The Suns had a guy that was already walking to the announce table fixin to check back in game ..... he did not get suspended either.

Though I do agree with Hos that the outcome of NBA games is more, shall we say, contrived than other professional sports associations. I'm still confounded that Derrick Fisher can receive an inbound pass, post up, and shoot in less than one-tenth of a second.

The key with Duncan's situation was that there was no altercation on the floor at the time.
The real person to blame in all this is Ron Artest. If it wasn't for him, then the NBA wouldn't have all these draconian rules.

I do NOT care what their rule is. The enforcement of that rule fixed a playoff series. I cannot abide that and therefore do not follow the game any more.
It could have been the exact opposite that the Suns guys did nothing and Duncan go suspended and I would feel the same. Why even play the series if you are simply going to hand it to the other team?
I have no idea if they have changed the rule or not. If they have I might one day consider watching again, but at this time I am still too disgusted by that decision to watch. I don't look down on anyone who does watch. I just will not at this time.

needless to say, if the suns win either game 3 or 4 the series will efectively be over

I sure wish the Spurs would guard the arc....give up 2s all game long...but stop giving up open 3s....especially a sharp shooting team like the Suns
I sure wish the Spurs would make their shots when they get fouled, like the Suns do.....the Suns end up with 3 pts, while the Spurs are lucky to get 1...since the only seem to make 1 of 2 FTs.
I sure wish the Spurs would box out and get some freakin rebounds....no excuse letting Dudley own you on the glass. Who is this guy? It is embarrassing how this guy is owning the Spurs this series.
I sure wish the Spurs could close out a quarter.....so far the Suns have owned the last 2 minutes of each quarter and thus are 2-0 in the series.
I wish Pop would swallow his pride and give Mahinmi some playing time instead of Bonner.
On a positive note, the Spurs were in position late to win both games, but just couldnt make the shots. The Suns did make the shots and thus did their job and kept HCA.
So now the Spurs definitely have to win these 2 in SA. If so, it will be a best of 3 series......
Props to the Suns for playing better than I have seen them play in a very long time against the Spurs in the postseason. I have to give them credit....and Gentry is definitely a better playoff coach than D'Antoni.

this was the most dissapointed i have ever been with the spurs. Let me preface my rant by saying that, obviously the suns are the better team, and its not even close, and they deserve to be up 3-0.
the spurs missed critical free throws (nothing new) and went on scoring droughts (nothing new). But the absolute most depressing thing about this team this whole series has been the horrendous defense. I dont understand how they kept switching on dragic(sp?) over, and over, and over, and over again and he kept getting favorable matchups over, and over, and over, and over again!! i mean come on Pop!! u are supposed to be one of the best coaches of all time, specially on the defensive end, but you couldnt figure out something for this in a quarter and a half? i made this anology to my friends while watching the game, it was as if someone sends you a link to something and u get rick rolled, ok whatever. but the suns kept sending the spurs the same email over, and over and over and over again, and the spurs kept clicking the GOT DAMN LINK!!! and subsequently kept getting rick rolled to death, it was the most hopeless thing ive seen from a spurs team on the defensive end my whole life!! (i became a spurs fan at birth because of my father but i didnt start comprehending it very well till i was about 11 or 12, right around when duncan was drafted)
anywho, ill end my rant on these notes and observations. The spurs are clearly done, duncan and ginobili cant be the best players on a championship caliber team anymore, Parker needs to be traded for a point guard that can create things for his teammates and not just himself(and one that can hit his FREAKING freethrows!!!) he and Hill are basically the same player but hill is cheaper and younger so trading parker would yield a better player. i also hope RJ opts out of his contract so we can at least try to get a good player this offseason, a tough task seeing as noone wants to play in SA :(
lastly, id like to apologize to rowdy for my response of your comment that pop wouldnt be able to adjust, clearly you were right, he wasnt able to adjust to your bench, specially dragic(sp?)

no gloating my patooty....if the Suns whip out the brooms on Sunday, you have every right to gloat.....and should. I for one have been quite obnoxious about the Spurs over the last decade or so...and so have many of the other Spurs fans on this forum. As much heartache as the Spurs have caused the Suns over the last several years, Suns fans have every right to remove that gorilla from their backs and throw it in our direction. I was thinking of Steve Young when I wrote the last sentence, but then I remembered the Gorilla is the Suns mascot.....hehehehe.
Gentry >>>>> D'Antoni
Kerr >>>>> Colangelo
I have to agree with MC Kaos.....I am a fan of defense first, and the Spurs defense makes me want to gag, makes me want to puke up the chicken wings I just finished eating while watching the game. It is like no one knows their assignments anymore. Everyone is switching, improper doubling, leaving players absolutely wide open, especially for 3s. All I heard was Bowen was only effective cause of Duncan. Well, to me, it seems like that D was only effective cause of Bowen. IMO, he was completely underrated and undervalued. He hardly played last season, so in these last two years, the Spurs D has fallen off tremendously.
I said before the series started that the Spurs needed to guard the arc and not turn it over a lot. Well they havent had a lot of turnovers, but they are not guarding the arc. Frye, Richardson, Dudley, Dragic, Nash, Kerr, Majerle, and even Sarver are having a field day beyond the arc agains the Spurs. Hell, even the Mayor of Phoenix went 4-5 against us in game 2.
This has been a painful series to watch.....very painful. No longer do we get those 4th quarter stops and cause droughts for several minutes at a time. No longer do we shut teams down to close out quarters. No longer do all but eliminate offensive rebounds. No longer do we seem to make shots when we need them. We are absolutely unclutch.....from the field, from the 3pt line, from the FT line, and definitely on the defensive end (our supposed bread and butter).
I just hope next season this team is without Jefferson, Mason (and I like Mason), and Bonner. Also, since it seems they dont want to give him playing time, might as well cut Hairston loose. He is one of my faves on the team, but Pop wont give him consistent minutes, even though all he does is hustle, rebound, and defend. Right now the only flaw I see in his game is his lack of a consistent jump shot. Maybe they can trade him for a 2nd round pick or something.
I want to bring Splitter over from Spain and re-sign Mahinmi.
In the draft, I want a long, tall, athletic wings who play D and can knock down a 3.....give me the kid from UConn in the 1st round....Stanley Robinson is his name I believe. In the 2nd, I wouldnt mind Greivis Vasquez, Tim Olbrecht, or Dexter Pittman. Vasquez reminds me of a poor mans Manu. Olbrecht plays a Dirk style game on offense, but he is one heckuva shot blocker on defense. Pittman is a load in the paint and has a soft touch around the basket. IMO, Barnes completely underutilized him at Texas. If we know we are not going to keep Ian, I want big Dex in the draft for sure.
In 2011, I am hoping for Jordan Hamilton of Texas. I want him at SG along side Robinson. Hamilton is 6'7 and Robinson is 6'8 or 6'9. Hamilton has a great 3pt shot, something the Spurs definitely need.

Can't lie though, it had to be a little hurtful to see that dragic kid pull up (nice veteran move) draw the foul and hit the 3. That right there was the series in a nutshell..
well what pisses me off is now he will be a nonfactor the rest of the postseason, but in this one game, he blew his load Pornstar style all over the Spurs D

Three down... One to Go :)
The series ain't over, and I'm sure the Spurs are gonna come out with a vengance on Sunday. Suns gotta keep it together for one more.
Can you say.... Goran Dragic??????
How sweet will it be to FINALLY rid ourselves of the perennial bully on our block by sweeping them and partying on their own floor?! The silence in the "Phone Booth" last night during the 4th Q was deafening and watching the "white-out" transform into empty seats was exhilarating! I'm hoping the Suns can remain focused and humble tomorrow and female-dog slap the hell outta SA into submission!

he will play tomorrow, but it doesnt matter if he is healthy or not....this series is over. Their only chance of beating the Suns is having God himself suit up a Spurs jersey

there is one way and one way only that the spurs win this series, and here it is.....
first, find the good Doc and the Delorian, crank it to 88 and go back to 2007, leave the current parker and pick up that parker and also pick up that mcdyess, then go back to 2005, drop off this manu and pick up that manu, then keep going to 2003 and pick up that richard jefferson and tim duncan. Then we go 2 or 3 years in the future and get that blair and hill.
so if no one finds the Delorian, the spurs wont win another game this season

MC KAos-you're a true NBA fan. You don't owe any apology. I had my beliefs that we had a unique bunch this year and it simply happened. Who would have thought of all people Dragic was the one tonight and not Nash or Amare or Dudley.
There's no gloating over this series. I'm just happy I can see a team this year that can play playoff caliber basketball like the Spurs have shown for years. Good luck on Sunday.
thanks for the kind words, ive liked discussing spurs/suns over the years with ya, hopefully the rivalry will continue into the future

so you are saying that God in a Spurs uniform would not lead us to victory? BLASPHEMY
with God on our team, we would shoot 100% from the field, beyond the arc, and definitely from the FT line...why? cause God would be the only one allowed to shoot. Everyone else would just stand around and watch him dish out some major OWNAGE....btw, PHX would score only 2 pts. God would feel sorry for them and allow them one basket at the end of the game.
BTW, if you are going back in time, why not bring the Ice Man, DRob, Elliott, Bowen, Horry, and Alvin? Take Jefferson back to Milwaukee, take Bonner back to Toronto, Take Mason back to Washington, Take Bogans back to wherever he came from.
Robinson, McDyess, Mahinmi
Duncan, Horry, Blair
Elliott, Bowen
Gervin, Manu, Temple
Parker, Alvin, Hill
Let the Suns bring back Charles, the Hawk, Majerle, KJ, Chambers, Marion, Bell....etc...it wouldnt matter, they would not be able to defeat that Spurs lineup.
This does lead me to an interesting question for Suns fans.....KJ or Nash? I choose KJ, but Im old school. He played in a far tougher era and got his team to the Finals.

I feel the series is over. I dont even see the Spurs winning tonight. I am sorry but I have lost hope and faith in this team. Aside from a handful of guys, the rest of these guys are just doggin it. They seem lost and scared. I havent seen this from a Pop/Duncan team ever.
However, if the Spurs, by some miracle were able to win the next 4, how would you Suns fans feel? What would your mindset be? Would it drive you to violence or depression? I am being serious here.....I just want to know what your honest reaction would be.
I know if the situation were reversed and it was the Suns owning the Spurs over and over and we blew a 3-0 lead, I think I would stop watching the Spurs/Suns games for a few years. I would probably never get overly emotional about my Spurs again, until they were finally able to overcome that hurdle. Basically I would become quite the bitter cynic. I would be like Randy Quaid in Major League 2. I would be a fan, I'd support my team, but I would have ZERO optimism or hope. My expectations for success would be so low that last place in the league would be like winning the title.

I wouldn't feel any different than I have the past decade. We've enjoyed many post-season opportunities and failed. So if for some reason we lost this series, it would be business as usual. :D
The Suns are definitely going to be going through a transitional phase and Nash will soon be gone, Amare' isn't a definite (not sure I would want to keep him anyway) and only time will tell if Dragic has it in him to be a decent replacement for Nash. Dragic doesn't have eyes in the back of his head like Nash does.
Like I said, it's been year after year of watching a team with no killer instinct. I'm tired of seeing stats over the years where the Suns were first in PPGs or first in 3 pointers, etc. Who cares about the regular season when it's just a pole position for the REAL season? I see something in this team this year that is quite different and that's why I was hopeful coming into this series.
If we play the Lakers, the way I look at it is if we had the same team from the past decade, we will lose miserably. This year, I'm a little more hopeful that we can beat them. We have shown we can play in away games and we have enough versatility from the bench that the odds of finding someone with the hot hand is more likely this season. Our defense has finally stepped up a bit and I'm interested how Lopez can come back from the back issue and defend the paint.
Neither one of our teams has had any real good games this series. The Suns have had a few games with an anemic first half. The Spurs have not clicked on these games as well. It was absolutely atrocious in prior years watching Tony Parker surgically dismantle the Suns layup after layup.

SO the Spurs are basically Golden State. The Mavs made them look like they were an actual championship basketball team, but they were just an old, but really well coached team that took advantage of Rick Carlisle and his horrible decision making throughout round 1.

My fellow Suns' fans...REJOICE!!!! The wicked witch has finally had the house dropped upon her! Now, can we shock the world again by toppling LA?!!
To the Spurs' fans... Besides Bowen and Horry (I've hated him since he was in HOU breaking our hearts), I've always respected your players and coach. They are a class organization and even though you guys have given us year after year of postseason misery, I will not gloat too much! Besides, you guys still have the shiny hardware (X4) that we Suns' fan are still longing for!!!

If you knew the men off the court, you would have great respect for Bowen and Horry. Yes they were antagonists on the court and may have done some cheap things here and there, but off the court they are awesome members of their respective communities.....doing so much for kids.
