View Full Version : Darren Sharper?
There are rumblings that Sharper could be a potential salary cap casualty in Green Bay. The team expressed a desire for veteran leadership in the secondary and Sharper would fit the bill. He is only 29 (30 in Nov.), so he has a few good years left and seems more of the FS type.
Thoughts?

Can you say Rodney Harrison? The Chargers let him go for similar reasons. Cap hit, loss of speed, age,etc
If he becomes available, we should be all over him.

It would be nice to have a real nfl FS for a change. It would be fitting since the last real FS we had, Teague, came from the Packers also:D
Maybe GB would trade him for Dex :D

He could end up being a "Rodney Harrison" for us, but going by what Pack fans are saying he just isn't the same Sharper anymore. I guess I'm 50/50 on him. If we didn't bother I'd be ok with it, if we did sign him I'd also be ok with it.

I know some injury problems have slowed him down but I'd take a chance on him. Roy and Sharper. That could be lethal!

Is there really any doubt that Sharper at FS would be an upgrade to our secondary?

Really, one of the things I want most from the new FS is for him to be a leader. I want someone to really help take charge back there. Sharper could be that guy, I suppose.
I, for one, think the demise of Darren Sharper is being over-rated. I don't think he's fallen quite as far as some others. I think he had to do too much for that team to be successful, and his play suffered because of it. We should be able to relate here...
Anyway, I do want a FS who will be more of a playmaker. But I think Dallas also puts a lot of emphasis on tackling, so a traditional "ball-hawk" may not be in the cards.

Sharper would be perfect back there, he's the only guy available that has enough talent to let Roy roam free. Sharpers hasn't had any problem getting tackles, he had 70 this year including 4 picks, two of which went for TDs. He's a veteran and he knows what it takes to win football games, I wouldn't mind having that line-up back there. Roy and Darren Version 2.0.

Yes, definitely. The Cowboys used veteren safties in the 90's with Everett and Washington. It's worked out in the past.

Well since you put it that way... :D
Seriously though, he would obviously be an upgrade, but so would 10 or 15 of the guys that post here. Hell, I'm 5'10" 245 lbs and I'd probably be an upgrade at safety for us.

A one legged Sharper with an inner ear fluid disorder would be an improvement over Tony Dixon.

He was also playing at a higher weight, b/c GB wanted him to play closer to the LOS. By moving him back to FS and dropping a few pounds, I would think that would not only help to extend his career but also cut back on the injuries.
I would take him in a NY min. More importantly, he is a vet that can 1) add a vet presence, 2) help settle a young secondary down and most importanlty, 3) set the Def. secondary and get everyone lined up.
He also has playoff and I think Super Bowl exp...
When you way all the + vs -, I think there are more +

I can without a doubt say I wouldn't be an upgrade. 6'2 300 *buzzer sound*

I beg to differ. Have you heard of a spin move, rip or club. Sounds like a NT in the making to me. :D

I like the Rodney Harrison comparison, mainly because the Patriots got Harrison for next to nothing. They signed Harrison the same day broke the bank for Roosevelt Colvin. Signing Colvin was front page news, and signing Harrison was was back page news. (shows quite a contrast in value).
If Sharper's willing to come in for a $2 million signing bonus that Harrison got, I'm for it. If he wants to be paid like an All Pro, no thanks.

I'd be happy if we were to sign him. But I'd also want to take a FS with one of our picks in the draft. That way we would not only have veteran leadership, but also depth at the position. I believe both of those are key aspects to an improved secondary (besides upgrading the front 7)
Combine the possible addition of a vet presence in the backfield, with a coach who focus' solely on the secondary, and we may see a much improved backfield next year.

absolutely not....he's too old....go young....by the time we're ready to play in the big game, Sharper will be retired.

THe whole GB defense is one big question mark and is one of the reasons that Sherman has had his wins clipped. Recent drafts have not given the Packers the playmaker on D that they need. With Favre's retirement drawing near ( 2005? 2006? 2007? ) they have some nagging questions about just how good they really are. Sharper would definitely be an upgrade, but at what cost?

Uh, no. He isn't available yet and he wouldn't be the only guy that has enough talent to let Roy roam free. Personally, I would much rather have Dwight Smith playing FS. He is younger and has played corner as well. He wants to be paid like a corner though and might be expensive.
I talked to a Pack fan today and he was very nonchalant about Sharper leaving. He thinks his play has fallen off. Another potential option though.
