I commented about this in another thread, but I'll repeat myself because I know for a lot of you the highlight of your day is reading my posts regardless of their originality.
I grew up playing Tecmo Bowl and then Madden. I counted down to the release of each new Madden like I count down to the draft. But I gave up on the franchise around Madden 2007 or so. The game was getting too hard. I'd either play on rookie and win by 40 every week, or play on Pro and couldn't complete a pass or run the ball for anything.
Additionally, my favorite feature was the Franchise mode, and I loved the draft. I would even create draft teams on NCAA, and import them. But the draft didn't make any sense. Teams who took a QB with the first pick the prior year, would take a QB in the first round the next year. Also, some positions would run out of draftees by the 4th round or so.
That all combined to ruin the experience for me, and I eventually found myself solely playing NCAA Football -- a much better franchise, IMO.

Too me drafting in the pc version is much easier once you import the draft class.

The presentation of the draft was great... with the names scrolling on the bottom, and the time limit to make a pick, etc. But there just wasn't any rhyme or reason to what position teams were drafting. To me, that isn't a minor thing when you get geeks like me who loved the franchise mode.

NCAA is a great game. I really have no complaints, other than the players don't grow. In other words, if you recruited a 6' 220 DE as a freshmen, he'd graduate as a 6' 220 DE (barring position change, etc).
So that also became an issue when I imported draft classes to Madden.

I'm in 2013 of my franchise mode. We're rated an 89. Won the Superbowl a couple years ago.
I've got Mark Sanchez at QB, Darrell Revis, Antoine Bethea, Jerod Mayo, Brian Cushing, Jared Lauranitis, Percey Harvin, and Reggie Bush. I've also got 2 other good running backs and 3 other good wide recievers.
I'm also about $4 million under the cap with all the guys locked up, inlcuding other people on the lines and at tight end.

I just got my XBox 360 and 1 year online deal yesterday for my Anniversary/Fathers Day gift.
Right now all I own is Left 4 Dead 2 and I've reserved my copy of UFC 2010 but I plan on getting Madden 2011. I thought about getting 2010 but then I figured since the new one would be out in August I might as well just wait till then because I'm sure everyone I'd be playing with over the next couple of months will wind up moving to 2011 and if I buy 2010 right now there is no way I'd buy 2011 a few months later. I generally skip a year with Madden, at least that's how I always used to do it.
I also have Red Dead Redemption and Modern Warfare 2 on tab as games I've got to get.

I play Madden almost exclusively for Franchise Mode. If they don't revamp it this year, I'm not buying.
I've played the game so much that I've realized that the same players pop up in the draft, so I can pretty much cherry pick elite players without scouting. I've got like 89 rated safeties as backups. My backup QB is often rated in the 90's. 3 RB's in the 90's, etc.
BTW, I absolutely ****ing hate the fact that you can't trade for future draft picks.

Just from playing the game a lot and starting a bunch of franchises, you start to notice the same names popping up and if you draft them once, you can be sure that if their names ever shows up in another franchise, it'll be the exact same player.

No kidding. As much fun as it is having a 6'3" 250 lb linebacker that runs a 4.38, it's not particularly realistic.

Okay, I misunderstood. I thought you meant that the same franchise mode would pump out the same draft "class" (perhaps with different named players).

Am I alone in that I never noticed the drafted players making much of an impact in franchise mode?

The glitching and Nano blitzes get out of hand and MOST people usually run the same 3 or 4 different offensive plays over and over and 1 or 2 defenses. Makes for a lame game.
There were a few pretty cool glitches out there that I have to admit I used to have some fun. One of my all time favorites was in 2006 I think. With the Falcons you select I-Form Twin TE running play, then audible to a pass play. After that you hit cancel audible to return to the running play. There was a glitch that would allow you to put the RB (Dunn) in motion, so when Vick dropped back to hand it off there was no RB. The whole defense would run towards the RB that was in motion and you could run with Vick out the other side for 80+ yard TDs over and over. Players would try spreading their line and using Dime packages etc, then you could just give it to Dunn up the middle for huge gains. I was averaging over 550 yards rushing a game online, people would get so pissed off it was pretty funny.
Another one that was fun in 2005 (I think) you could pitch the ball, if you called a shotgun pass play and send all the WRs on slants to the inside, then after the ball is hiked wait a second or 2 and pitch the ball to the RB, you could run 15 yards down field before the defenders would even try and tackle you.
Anymore I just prefer to play vs the computer with modified sliders to make the game more balanced and fair.
The draft has become so lame in Franchise Mode I dont even bother with it anymore. I usually just trade my draft picks for you and up and coming players that I know will improve.
One tip for building offensive linemen is to create packages that utilize them as extra blockers on running plays instead of using TEs. They usually get matched up vs LBs and get a ton of pancake blocks over the course of the season and helps speed up their advancement.

Preorder? Why? This is 2010, no one sells out of games anymore with a million sources.
For a variety of reasons, really.
1) I can pay on it when I feel like it till the game comes in so that when it gets here I'll owe maybe 5-10 dollars on it, tops. Or nothing at all for that matter. That's convient, to me anyway.
2) The extras you get from Gamestop and/or the game company itself for pre-orders. A lot of games, that I've seen thus far, gives you little extras if you pre-order.
For example with my UFC 2010 I get 4 extra fighters that you can only get if you pre-order the game through gamestop. There is no other way to unlock them or have them available. They're not anything special, just 4 more guys from last years TUF show, but it's something extra that's kind of fun to have, IMO.
Another example is that I know if you pre-order Red Dead Redemption through Gamestop then you get some sort of added feature that allows you to wear it permanetly, through out the game, as an extra costume feature of some sort that cuts the regeneration time in half of some special feature called Dead Aim which is used to temporarily slow time down so that you can shoot 4-5 badguys before they are able to do anything, used during big time battles I suppose.
The slow down time feature, the Dead Aim, is always there but it takes time to recharge, or the use of items. With the added feature by pre-ordering it cuts the recharge time in half and you never have to find items to recharge it with.
It's nothing major, of course, but it's a neat little extra for those who go out and pre-order things.
3) I don't have to fight through crowds or stand in long lines to get my game. I can wait a couple days after it comes out, walk right in and pick up my copy that is behind the counter saved for me.
It's really simple convience for me is why I like pre-ordering.
