View Full Version : Car Wreck Scam

There is a car wreck in the intersection where I live. I was in the shower and didn't hear it happen. But I heard the fire truck sirens and then heard them stop. I told my wife, "that sounds like it is right here. Well, it is. It may not have mattered even if I wasn't in the shower. I still may not have heard it.
It was a 2 car accident. A sedan and a passenger van. The woman in the sedan complained of neck pains and had to be extricated from the car.
Bull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is almost no damage to the car. It is a 2006 Chrysler Sirrus. No air bag deployment and it is a front impact. There was literally no damage to the van. No air bag deployment.
Oh, on the side of the van, "Pima County Motor Pool."
Can you say "going to try and milk Pima County for a settlement?"
My daughter has the digital camera at school today or I would get you a shot of this. All my neighbors are disgusted. The most frequent comment is "you've got to be kidding me."

I work for a city in North Dallas and people I have been told by those that work in the Risk Management Department about how people just see dollar signs when citizens are involved in an accident with a City Vehicle.

The tow truck driver is driving the car onto the truck. Has to be less than $400 in damage and that would be from a scam auto body shop.

No, the OP intended for this thread to be about "fraud".
But other folks came in and all but asked the OP was the woman an illegal alien.
I live in Texas and we have our own fair share of illegal immigration problems but when I read the OP's comments, I didn't once make an assumption that the woman who may/may not attempt to defraud the county was an "illegal alien".

That happened to us, too. Kil had a very minor fender bender at a stop light and tapped the car in front of him. It damaged our car somewhat, but only because the car in front was an SUV and the tire on the back crunched the hood/radiator.
At the time, the police came and nobody wanted to go to the hospital, everyone was just fine.
A few months later, here comes notification from the shyster lawyers that the people are suing for extended physical impairment, loss of work, etc.
It went nowhere, of course, because they were full of ****.

As I headed Northbound on the Garden State Parkway, the exit I was to take was at a stand still. I had no problem stopping but the schmuck in the giant Denali behind me did and sandwiched me between him and the hot girl in a Honda Accord in front of me.
The truck was owned by a landscaping business and while I didn't sue, their insurance company gave a good amount of value for the totaled car.

Cousin of mine had that happen to him. He was in the drive thru line at McDonalds and let off the brake a little bit. Going at a max of idling speed he bumped the person in front of him.
Some lady stepped out of her car and saw his work truck and then got back in. He goes up to her window and she starts saying her back is really messed up and the he "really rocked her".
Now, my cousin lives in a small town and people know people. It's not really small but if you have lived there all your life, you're pretty sure to know someone who at least knows the next person. You've heard stories at least. This particular person doesn't have the greatest reputation.
Anyway, she's complaining about back and neck pain so an ambulance comes. No paint traded at all. No damage to either vehicle and he is driving a pretty good-sized work vehicle. The ambulance comes and they ask the lady if she wants to go to the hospital and she declines. Everyone goes on their way.
Three days later the lady goes into the hospital complaining of prolonged back and neck pain. From what I gather, there's possible legal action being taken against the company he worked for. They are a HUGE company so she really stands no chance against the company but I think she may have filed something against my cousin directly.
Some people are just looking for an easy ride. Funny thing is, this lady really stands no chance in any part of either claim. She's likely going to spend a ton of money trying to milk money from someone and end up worse off. At least I hope she does.

And funnily enough, Hos replied to Cajun with the answer that I assumed he was asking.
So how is Maikeru assuming something other than what Cajun implied and Hostile replied in the negative. Seems three people assumed the same thing re: Cajun's question. So maybe instead of implying a question, maybe he should've just outright asked it. No assumptions would be necessary.
Now with that said, bbgun mentioned bus accidents and people running for neck braces.
Imagine this: In the last 3-4 months, there have been two accidents between a city bus and a light rail train. Both times the bus driver was cited, but imagine the lawsuits that have probably been filed.

Gotta love someone reading about a woman trying to defraud a County in Arizona and automatically assuming it was an Illegal Alien.
I just posed the thought and didn't assume she was anything. He said I assumed she was. I never said nor eluded to it.
We have a history here in Nashville where there were illegals pulling this very scam. Though what they did was park at a red light and wait for someone driving either a company car or county vehicle and back into them.
So, with that said, and Hos' previous posts about Illegals with no insurance, I asked the non askable question so I didn't get a warning about politics.
But mikey decides, instead of letting the thing play out, he wants to make something out of it that isn't there.

I have not done any forensic psychology, but one of my cohorts did her internship with someone who does forensic psychology, and the majority of their referrals were regarding malingering (which is what we are all talking about here, whether or not a person is lying about the extent of their "suffering"), and from what I have gathered, there are some really good instruments out there that can easily spot someone who's malingering. Usually it is because they exaggerate too much and that gets them caught.
I too have had friends who've lost their job b/c of some bs fender bender. I cannot fathom why an insurance company would be willing to shell out all that money to those people rather than get an impartial psychologist to see if this person is truly suffering. I remember seeing one of those 20/20 thingies that showed PI's following people after they've received damages compensation, and they were no longer suffering as much as they were before, some miraculously recovered.

I had just taken the off ramp in traffic about a year and a half ago and there was traffic so I was sitting still just waiting for it to move.
In my rare view mirror I see a van take the exit and know immediately that he's going too fast to actually be paying attention, so either he's going to hit me or he's going to have to stomp on the breaks.
To make matters worse, I can see him yapping away on one of those nextel chirp phones that contracters love to hold up to their face and yell into rather than just using it like a damn phone, but that's besides the point.
He bumps into me of course, and I get out to check the damage. He managed to bend my bumper a little bit but it's not bad.
I ask him for his info and he starts giving me his stuff and telling me at the same time that he sees no damage. I tell him, you think my bumper was that way before you hit me?
He says I don't know, how do I know you're telling the truth?
At that point I pretty much lost my ****. This idiot hits ME and then has the balls to call me a liar? Meanwhile the bafoon was on his phone.
By the time the whole thing is over I just told him to get the **** out of there, because I don't want to deal with all this ****. There was traffic all over the place and no shoulder so we were just sitting in the middle of the road.
I regret everyday that I didn't make his life hell, actually and take it to his insurance.

You are EXTREMELY sensitive and speculate WAYYY to much.
A grown man shouldn't be so flippin sensitive.
I will take that under advisement.

Several months ago I was taking one of our vehicles to be inspected. A car was making a left turn into a driveway just past an intersection so I stopped. A car tried to beat a yellow light (I watched it in the side mirror) and hit me from behind, barely pushing me forward. I was in a 15 passenger van (I coach three sports and Odyssey of the Mind so the van works for us as an extra vehicle) plus was standing on the breaks so I barely moved forward, just kissing the bumper of the car in front.
I received three phone solicitations and five by mail from lawyers. Thought nothing of it as the car owner's insurance paid the $387 for my back bumper damage and it was a very minor "accident".
Last week I get a supoena. I live in a smaller area and know all the judges so I make a few calls and find out that there's a six figure lawsuit from the car in front of me.
If there were eggs on my front bumber, half of them wouldn't have broken but the person in front of me couldn't say "NO" to the dollars signs.

There is one other type of person you didn't mention, but I sure as hell won't.
They think their lifestyle means they can do whatever they want.

Funny, but I read Cajun's reply and thought the same thing.
It's pretty hard to say what people thought about a question that wasn't outright asked on a topic that's delicate to begin with an political in nature.
*I* think Cajun's implication was 'was the driver hispanic.' That's fairly clear from context. That's not, however, the same thing as 'was the person an illegal alien.'
What's more, his intent for asking if the person were hispanic could have been uncharitable toward hispanic drivers, or it could have been an allusion to the illegal alien conversation in a previous thread, or it could have been (how I took it, at least before reading the prior thread) just a hat tip to the issues AZ has right now and an acknowledgement that the touchy issue of an insurance fraud incident would be all that much touchier if the driver were hispanic in the current climate.
Either way, his unasked question was a far cry from anything racially insensitive or inappropriate, so I thought I'd stick up for his post in case anybody is particularly determined to misconstrue the topic on purpose.
A side note: I was born and raised in AZ, and I understand some of the issues there in a way many do not. I'm sensitive to the unfair and uninformed criticism Arizona gets on this topic.

Thing is Hostile, a person can have a serious neck injury with no air bag being deployed, you don't know if the person has any type of arthritis, or any past neck problems. So to assume that it's a scam just because minimal damage and no air bags is wrong IMO... That being said with how people are now days I can understand why you'd think it was a scam...

And what's it come down to is too many crying wolf, looking for a payday.
Unfortunately the first response to an accident now isn't 'are you okay'?, but silently, '****, there goes my insurance and possibly worse'.
The human element has been thoroughly scrubbed from consideration, due to overuse of a thing. Now it's woe to the poor slob who really did get hurt; for he/she is surely going to have endure undue skepticism and critical scrutiny.
