I was looking over the list of 1st time eligible players for next year's Hall of Fame to see how that could affect Irvin's chances. Among the newly eligible players are Reggie White, Aikman, Warren Moon, Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed. White is definitely a lock and one would hope Aikman is, but with these morons voting, who knows. I would love to see Irvin and Aikman go in together, but it may tough once again for Irvin to get in next year.

Aikman HAS to be a lock. Reggie will get in as will Moon. Thomas and Reed will not get in. Lord knows what will happen.

It would be shame, but it would not surprise me if the Bills players get in and our Cowboys players don't.......

White & Aikman will be locks. Thurman Thomas stands the best chance to also be a 1st year lock, but I'm not so sure he'll make it in. Reed & Moon will be waiting for a couple more seasons.

I think Moon's numbers probably get him in on the 1st ballot, or at worst in the same spot as Irvin was this year, just missing 80%

Well, you can forget about Aikman.
I know, I know, everyone will tell me there is no way they could leave him of the first ballot.
I will believe it when I see it, and I doubt I will next year.
I am sure the argument will be his numbers don't stack up to a first ballot guy like Marino, and Elway.

I think the same thing. If they can screw Aikman, they will.

Troy SHOULD be a lock. I don't think he will be though.

Irvin should get in over Thomas or Reed.

I don't think Thurman Thomas should ever get in.
After next year, Curtis Martin will surpass Thurman Thomas in rushing yards and he won't even be in the top 10 of all time any longer.
He is not even in the top 20 in TD's scored.
I don't know if he should get in either but he damn sure shouldn't get in ahead of Michael.

I hear ya Sarge. I don't see Thurman Thomas getting in next year. If Steve Young gets in on his first round Troy Aikman should.

Warren Moon SHOULD be a lock...it is the PRO football HOF not the NFL HOF, and I think Moon has more passing yards then any other QB (including Marino) due to his time the NFL and CFL.
However his off the field issues may way in to a decision.

I agree. Moon should be a lock as well. So far we have 3 locks for next year if I am thinking correctly. Moon, White, and Aikman. They can allow up to 8 in per year, is that right?

I think the max is 6, but I could be wrong.

If Steve Young gets in on his first round Troy Aikman should.
That should be a no-brainer. Despite the hate of the Cowboys franchise, Aikman better in his first time around.

While he was a great olineman, I wouldn't be surprised if he did not make it his first year. Lineman seldom get the credit they deserve.

I don't think Thurman Thomas should ever get in.
My favorite memory of Thomas was when he started to slide in the draft. ESPN kept cutting to him and each time they were trying to make excuses for him getting picked over.

The only reason Aikman would be questioned as a first ballot HOF'er, is mainly because of his teammate Emmitt Smith!
What!?
Allow me to explain...
Emmitt scored exactly 145 rushing TD's between 90'-00'. Aikman could have easily thrown half of those, but running the ball is a higher percentage play. Why risk a sack, interception, tipped or dropped pass in the redzone when you got Emmitt...right?
It's a tough pill to swallow I know, but Emmitt was just phenomenal and made it look easy from 5 yards out. Of course, Aikman never complained about all those TD's or yards Emmitt got instead of him. Aikman was simply a high percentage player all-around and understood the run first philosophy.
Aikman's stats
http://members.aol.com/bluekate/troybio_stats.htm
Tack on 72 passing TD's to Aikman's resume and he goes from 165 to 237 and into elite company. Not to mention his passer rating going up significantly.
I hope these HOF voters understand all this stuff next year.

... is a guaranteed first ballot. When they talk about him it's in the same breath as John Hannah and oddly enough Larry Allen. Those three men will all be first ballot guys.

Bruce Matthews will be eligible in two years for induction into the Hall of Fame Class of 2007. Without a doubt, he is a lock. He is one of the best OL of all-time.

Troy Aikman never wore fur coats and sunglasses to a drug trial involving hookers and cocaine.
Aikman is a lock.
Guys, I know we all love Mike but don't act suprise why he was denied. This is not the same as Bob Hayes not getting in. Irvin didn't get in because of his off the field troubles. The writes wanted to send a message that the way you conduct yourself off the field will impact your Hall of Fame status.

I think a change in the bylines for HOF voting is needed, then, because there just seems to be so many instances where voters are inconsistent with their beliefs and what the rules dictate. I was watching Inside the NFL a while back, when discussing Pat Tillman going into the Hall. A direct quote from the HOF book was put up there saying how it is prohibited to take into consideration anything other than on-field performance, so Peter King was arguing vehemently against placing Pat in the Hall.
Yet, in the case of Irvin, the off-field stuff is considered, and in the case of Pat, I've seen several come to his defense suggesting he should be placed in Canton despite the aforementioned rules.
As the rulebook currently states things, the Hall of Fame really isn't about being placed in immortality for anything BUT on-field stuff. As mentioned in another thread, heck, Lawrence Taylor was put in there and he was a disgrace to the game in every way other than his play on the field.
As for the first-ballot thing next year, I wouldn't be surprised if Moon isn't a first-ballot guy even though I think he should be. He just seems to be a guy that is forgotten about at times. Aikman should be a lock, but it wouldn't surprise me if there's a contingency against him due to the lack of stats -- it shouldn't happen, but it wouldn't surprise me. Thomas is a borderline guy, and Reed isn't a first-ballot type. Reggie White goes without saying.

Well said and I agree with everything you wrote. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is not like the baseball HOF.
Sometimes, I think the media likes to play the role of moral police and set examples which is what they are trying to do with the Irvin case. They obviously want to send a message. But yeah, they failed to do that with L.T.

I don't think Warren Moon will be a lock if the prevailing theory some have that off the field problems does influence voters.
I remember he was involved in a domestic violence issue regarding his wife being beaten. That's just as bad in my book as drugs.
I don't see other teams having a problem having their players inducted. Particularly if you are a Steeler or Niner.
But it seems to me if you wear the Star they don't want you.
