We've got members currently deployed in some places most of us would pay to never see. They are away from friends, family, and loved ones. Take a minute or two out of your day to honor those who honor us now with their service, and honor those who have served before.

Thank you to all the active, reserve, and retired men and women who have served our country. I mean that.

Casmith07, come back safe man.

I usually only celebrate Memorial Day because it gives me the day off. But I like casmith07 and I have family in Afghanistan and I hope she returns safely. So, today, I will take a few moments of silence while at church to pray for those who serve our country, even if it is over something I disagree with.

we could never thank our military enough, so let's just try when we can to do things for active military and retired vets.

It is the
VETERAN,
not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is
the VETERAN,
not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

This is the main thing. I really don't even get along with my sister-in-law. We butt heads, but I still want her home safely. So we sent some shouts out to the whole situation in church today.

Great post, Hos. Unfortunately, I think the POLITICIAN is slowly taking away some of these things for which our vets have fought and sacrificed for.

In church today, the preacher was speaking of a man who lost his arm in the war. The soldier's surgeon was a compassionate surgeon. When he amputated his arm he felt bad for the young man who lost his arm. It couldn't be saved.

The surgeon waited by his bed throughout the night until he awoke, so he could tell him how sorry he was about having lost his arm.

The kid's response was, "I didn't lose my arm. I gave it fighting for a cause."

A Memorial Day theme no doubt, but he made the point well.

We can never fully repay our debt to our fallen brothers. Your always in my mind men and I will never forget your sacrifice for this country, for your families, and for your fellow soldiers. I cannot express fully the emotions that well up in me on this day... for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, We sweat together, we bled together and you will never be forgotten.

To all of the men and women who have fallen, I thank you, from the depths of my soul, I thank you. I honor you daily and on this day of quiet reflection I celebrate your sacrifice.

God Bless and keep our soldiers safe.

I'd also like to thank Larry Havers, who's grave is near my grandparents in a local cemetary.

Larry was killed 10-29-67 as the result of small arms fire in Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam.

As someone that served during Desert Storm, I get a little chocked up when I see the respect given to our blessed veterans. It's nice to know that the sacrifice and service rendered to help protect what we stand for isn't forgotten. Well wishes to all of my fellow vets 6 feet under, retired, and still active serving in various situations. God bless.

As a soldier that served over 23 yrs. in SF, I can't even begin to describe the difficulty it takes to cope with being away from your loved ones. There were several times for me, while deployed to some conflict in a different world far away from here, that my heart simply ached because I missed my wife and two sons so much. I would try to block it out so my focus would be on the mission at hand, but, God, it was so damn hard to fight through the process.

When we would get back to friendly lines after being in the "bite" for two weeks at a time, I'd look forward to reading two month old mail my wife sent me. Feelings of happiness would turn into longing while reading the letters where she described my children's first words, first steps, first homerun, first graduation from school, etc. Those were the ones that were always tough for me to deal with.

So, I'd made it a point to "adopt" several children while deployed. I'd bring those 5 lb bags of Sam's candy with me and hand it out whenever it was possible. I'd find some decent wood and build/repair some of the shanties that poor families lived in. I would even give away some of my rations so that they could have some decent food once in awhile. Their smiles, the happiness we shared, always made me feel better. And even though I couldn't block out all the pain regarding my own family, at least it helped me cope.

But all that sadness was quickly vanquished the moment you stepped off that plane and into the arms of your loved ones. What even made it more special for me was the applause we were getting from all the civilians while we made our way to the baggage claim when coming back from places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Those sweet, simple gestures are the kind of memories that you never forget - and why it made your sacrifice worth it.

So if you ever want to make a military member feel that his/her sacrifice is worth it, go out of your way to personally thank them for it.

Just that simple gesture will go a long ways in helping them to "cope".
