An Italian limo driver who grew up in NY told me the best pizza is at Lombardi's. I think it is in Manhattan or Lower Manhattan. I haven't been there yet. I might try it in a couple of weeks when I go to The City.

Best pizza I have had so far was in some small Italian pizzeria in Amberg, Germany. Unbelievable. The pizza here in NJ, about an hour south of NYC, is really good.

There are about eleventy billion pizza places in Manhattan. If you're just looking for a slice, go anywhere that you can see them making the pies. chances are, it will be fine.

Personally, I know of one Ray's pizza (again, there's a boatload of Rays, all of which are the "original") on 6th Avenue and 11th Street in the Village that was really good the last time I was there.

The other good places I know are all up in Westchester County (30-45mins north), which isn't very helpful if you're in the city.

The best pizza in ny is not in the city. Its in Utica.

One of the first pizzerias in the entire country and the best pizza I have ever had anywhere, not to mention the tomato pie.

http://www.oscugnizzos.com/

skineets is the best there is. I am not trying to be a homer but in this case I will be. you can get the kind of pizza they make in NY city in any city or small town in the country.

But there is only one O'scugnizzo's...(Skineets)

What makes pizza better in NY than in say New Mexico or Galveston?

Because the majority of the pizza we get in the South is from a franchise. Once in a while you can find a restaurant that makes their pizza truly from scratch, mom and pop type places. Otherwise you gotta go where it all started in this country and that is NY.

Like trying to find decent Mexican food up north, very rare...

What makes pizza better in NY than in say New Mexico or Galveston? There is a pizza place here in Tucson that every New Yorker I know here swears is just like the pizza back in New York. I have had it. I don't think it is as good as my favorite place here.

That place is called Zachary's and everyone I have ever taken there agrees it is the best pizza they have ever had.

The first time I took my brother as we were walking up he said, "this place is a dive."

I replied, "yes it is, and this dive has the best pizza you will ever eat."

I have friends from out of town, who every time they come to town to visit they insist we get a pizza from Zachary's. Every time.

The last thing I will say about pizza is to quote a good friend Chris. "Pizza is like sex. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad, it's really good."

Amen.

The absolute best pizza I've had here was actually in Weehawken, NJ. It was a small dive that had an actual brick oven.

There is a place on Greenwich Ave. in Greenwich, CT called the Pizza Factory. They actually sold out and aren't quite as good as they were a couple of years ago. There pizza was really good.

None of these are NYC though.

As for NYC, they all serve New York style pizza and are all pretty much made the same exact way, you can practically go anywhere and get it and it will pretty much taste the same. It's good, but my favorite is thin crust (the crackery crust), but that is really hard to find here.

For NY style pizza, there are only really three things that could make one differ form the other. The oven it's cooked in, the dough it's made with and the tomato sauce. Very few of them don't use prepackaged ingredients. Those that don't will probably have better pizza. They are just far and few between.

Real Mexican food you CAN find here, but thats the problem. Real Mexican food is bland. It's Tex-Mex that is good. The main difference between Mexican food and Tex-Mex is Tex-Mex has a lot more flavor.

All Mexican restraunts here are bland, but thats all I can get for my Mexican food fix.

British version.

Mexican up here in the NE is nothing impressive. At least I haven't gone to any that are. I've gone to some places that claim to be authentic Mexican', but all I can figure is higher grade meat than Taco Bell.

If there is a difference between Quesadilla, Taco, Burrito & Fajita, aside from how they appear, I don't know what it is. Just shredded meats wrapped in some form of tortilla, hard or soft, with cheese, onions, etc... and guac on the side. The same dish, molded differently and called something else.

I've never tried Cuban, but the Spanish Restaurants are awesome.
I don't like the city of Newark, but the Spanish Tavern and Iberian Peninsula are some awesome restaurants and worth the trip.

Iberia has had rodizio for a very long time, and it's the best I've had.

Maybe you were eating Tex-Mex on the boarder and didn't know it. :p: Well, either that or you suffer from what we refer to as "The Ragu Effect". Which basically is when someone thinks crap is good because all they ever had was crap! :laugh2: (It obviously got it's name because someone thought Ragu was good, because they've never actually had a good spaghetti sauce)

I've eaten all kinds of Mexican from Texas, New York, New Mexico and in many locale in Mexico itself. My bothers ex-wife was an illegal alien before they were married. It is without question my opinion that *real* Mexican food is bland.

Give me Tex-Mex or give me death! :laugh2:

Menudo is bland? Posole is bland? Cocido is bland? Anything cooked with chili is bland? Chicharones are bland? Barbacoa is bland? Birrea is bland?

Hey, I fully agree that refried beans, rice and tortillas which are a staple are kind of bland, but Mexican food is far from bland. In Cancun they actually make fruit tacos. Tacos from mangos, papayas, bananas, and other fruits. In many places in Mexico staple foods are shrimp, crab, and other meats.

I don't know what you have eaten to base that opinion on, but it is off base. As far as the Ragu comment, the tomato was actually discovered by the Aztecs (root word tomatl) in Mexico and taken worldwide. So was chocolate (root word chocolatl). The Italians may have perfected use of tomatoes, and Swiss may have perfected chocolate, but they got it from Mexican Indians.

There are no Taco Bells where I live. Only Mom and Pap joints. Most chain restaurants aren't allowed to open where I live. We have a Subway, and there happens to be a McDonalds physically "on the highway". Meaning you exit the highway to get to it and then back on the highway. You can't get to it without getting on the highway. Thats because my town won't let them build there.

When I say bland, I'm not talking about spice. I'm talking about bland.

In my old crock pot recipe thread there is a recipe for posole. Trust me, it is the bomb.

Barbacoa is a pit cooked pig, lamb, or goat. It is absolutely succulent.

Birria is a type of meat that is cooked almost in a stew. It is shredded and juicy and spicy. There's a place here that puts the birria on tacos and it is delightful.

This is birria.

http://lasrecetascaserasdemama.com/images/mexican/menu1/birria.jpg

I am pretty sure you know what menudo is. Many hate it. It is anything but bland though. People here who have hangovers, eat menudo.

Chicharrones are a meaty pork rind. Not like the ones in a potato chip bag either. Sometimes they are called cracklings by gringos. Very tasty.

These are chicharrones.

http://3guysfrommiami.com/images/chichas.jpg

Cocido is a type of stew. I looked it up and it is actually from Spain, but I've had it in many Mexican restaurants. I've had cocido with chicken, pork, boiled eggs, corn on the cob, cabbage, potatoes, onions, garlic, cilantro, and carrots. It isn't even close to bland. But in fairness it is also not Mexican. My bad on that.

So don't blast anyone in the sack for that one.
