The Lakers would still be struggling to get over the hump if it weren't for Jerry West doing them a favor when he was on his way out in Memphis.
Lakers got Gasol for some fringe NBA players and a couple of 1st round picks. And everyone knows that 1st round picks aren't worth much in the NBA unless you're picking in the lottery.
So screw the Lakers and The Logo for handing them a quality player for peanuts.

Game 5 Kobe played huge, yet the rest of the team played like **** and what happend? Lakers got rocked. Game 7: He plays arguably his worst playoff game of his career and Lakers still win?....I'm not saying Kobe isnt a great player, cause he is. I'm just saying this series is a great example of basketball being a TEAM , so to judge Kobe being better player based on winning championships is completely irrelevant.
That's like saying Eli Manning is better Qb than Dan Marino becuase Eli has more championships.
Kobe shot 40% in the series. Having a hard time grasping how that's MVP worthy.

I hate when people say this. The Gasol deal was one-sided, but that's the way the NBA is now with teams trying to clear salary-cap space for money reasons and to possibly sign free agents. The Grizzlies were able to use the cap space to trade for Zach Randolph who became an All-Star in 2009-2010, helping them with 16 more games last season, the most since the made the playoffs three straight years.
Look at some of the more one-sided trades made in recent years and no one ever mentions them because those teams haven't been able to convert those trades into championships. The Spurs got Richard Jefferson, a former All-Star and 20 PPG/5 RPG guy in 2008-2009 for Bruce Bowen (who retired), Fabricio Oberto (who was waived), and 37 year-old Kurt Thomas who averaged a whopping 3 PPG/5 RPG. That was a way more one-sided trade. The Mavs got Caron Butler (former All-Star and 20 PPG/6 RPG), Brendan Haywood (10 PPG/10 RPG) and DeShaun Stevenson for Josh Howard (who played 4 games and got hurt), Drew Gooden (who was waived) and a couple of journeyman. And to top it off, Cleveland got 2-time All-Star Antawn Jamison (20 PPG/9 RPG) and Sebastion Telfair for Zydrunas Ilgauskas who they got back a month later! Talk about getting something for nothing and circumventing the salary cap. At least the Grizzlies got a legitimate center who's worth his weight in gold in Marc Gasol who averaged 14.6 PPG/9.3 RPG last season. By comparison, Pau averaged 18.8 PPG/11.8 RPG last season, is 4 years older and had never won a playoff series before joining the Lakers. They also got Donte Green, a nice young player who they drafted with the Laker's pick in 2008 but they traded him away to Sacramento where he started in 50 games last season.
Jerry West also left the Grizzlies at the end of the 2007 season (June 2007) and the Gasol trade wasn't made until February 2008. Sure, maybe West still had some influence with his successor who's job was on the line after a year. I know my former co-workers are tripping over themselves to do me favors.

Someone has to win the Finals MVP. Who else should get it, unless you are going to give it to someone from the losing team where no one played consistently well all 7 games either. Pierce was just average and Rondo only had 2 games with double-digit assists. Allen had one great game, one horrible game and several average games. Garnett had a few bad games, only one double-digit rebound game and averaged 6 RPG for the series. On the Lakers, the only other player really worthy of the MVP was Gasol and he disappeared in 2 of the 3 games in Boston. Bryant didn't have a series for the record books, but I can't imagine how people can question him being the MVP when he pulls down 11 and 15 rebounds in back to back elimination games to win the Finals and averages 28.6 PPG, 8 RPG, 3.9 APG and 2.1 Steals per game and shot 40%.
In 1996, in the finals against Seattle, Michael Jordan averaged 27.3 PPG, 5.33 RPG, 4.2 APG, and 1.7 Steals per game and shot 41%. M.J. also had games where he shot 9 for 22, 11 for 23, 6 for 19, and 5 for 19 in the final clinching game. Of course he won Finals MVP and deservedly so.

He won because he was the best player on the court. Arrest came up big last night, but don't fool yourself nobody is getting those open looks without Kobe drawing double teams. Also, don't discount his 14 rebounds. Even though he didn't shoot a high percentage he affected the game in other ways, that's the sign of a great player. Your boy Lebron will never be Kobe, because he dosent have Kobe's will and kobe's disgust for losing. Kobe eats, sleeps, and breathes basketball. IMO lebron dosent.

Then enlighten me what you think a mvp is? Most of them are given to the player with the most points. Lebron got it because he nearly averaged a triple double in the season.

He shoot poorly last night but, he played good defense, he rebounded and he had assists. He lead the Lakers in Scoring, Assists and Steals in the Series. As poorly as he shot, he still lead all scores with 23. If you look at the whole series, there really is nobody else who was nearly as deserving, at least IMO. For the Celtics, I'd probably say Rondo. For the Lakers, the only other guy might be Gasol but he did not have as good a series as did Kobe. Kobe did not look spectacular last night but good defensive teams will make you look that way.

Oh, you didn't get to see those games, just looked at the box score and figured that Kobe didn't play well.
Kobe played very well last night. His shooting was terrible but as any real basketball fan knows, shooting isn't all there is to the game. Kobe crashed the boards, got steals, played excellent defense, and got his guys pumped when they were down by 13.
Nobody gets a lot of breakaway dunks or layups against the Celtics. Boston is known for its defense and it showed against the Lakers. What also showed last night was how good the Lakers can be at defense and Kobe was the key to that.
How people can say that Gasol should have been the MVP is beyond me. You cite the fact that Kobe didn't shoot well but since you didn't actually watch the game let me clue you in that Pau didn't shoot well either. He was 6 of 16 and missed 6 free-throws! The difference is that 6 of Kobe's misses were 3-pointers while almost all of Gasol's misses were from within 3 feet of the rim.
The only Laker to shoot better than 50% was Fisher who went 4 of 6 and hit 2 crucial 3-pointers.
Only someone who doesn't really know the game of basketball and didn't really watch the game would think that Kobe didn't deserve the Finals MVP award.
Checking out the box score and watching the highlights on BSPN is not the same as actually watching the game dude.
Oh and for the record, your boy LeBron went 8 of 21 in game-6 against the Celtics. He also had 9 turnovers. Not exactly MVP-worthy either according to your standards. Talk about falling flat 2 years in a row! :lmao2: :lmao2: :lmao2:

I read a good quote about the whole Gasol should have been MVP instead of Kobe argument.
They said, without Gasol, Lakers would not have won Game 7. Without Kobe, Lakers get swept.

I have that clown on ignore.
I don't talk numbers?
Kobe shot 40% from the field in the series. He's 2 for 7 in NBA Finals MVP's.
Your turn.
Seeing how I own you every time we have a "discussion", I'd put me on ignore too. No need in getting your manhood crushed everyday. Slate, tell me how my *** taste?

If you notice, I always preach.
It's my predictions that are god awful but I make excellent cases.
If we're talking most valuable player, it's Gasol or Bynum. We've seen this team WITH Kobe and without Bynum and it's completely different. If Bynum wasn't playing, then it would be 08 all over again. We got a glimpse of that game 4.
Totally ridiculous. You think Bynum, who played 33 minutes total in the last two games, is more valuable than Kobe? No doubt that Bynum made a difference this series, but to say he deserved MVP is crazy. If Bynum doesn't play, the Lakers probably lose. If Kobe doesn't play, they probably get swept. If Gasol doesn't play, they probably lose in 5 or 6. The fact is that the Lakers won the Finals as a team. Every player on the team who played contributed and made a difference in the game. You take any of their top 6-8 players out and the outcome is probably different. But it's asinine to hypothetically assume the team would lose without Bynum or Gasol without also considering how they'd do without Kobe.
Also, does anyone else find it ironic how Slate for weeks was calling Gasol soft and a flopper and posting pictures comparing him to llamas and ostriches and now all of a sudden he's his biggest supporter? How typical... All the Kobe praise during the Finals has to hurt when your idol Lebron is sitting at home.
My ownage is complete here.
May this thread R.I.P.
You're right... With everyone who's owned you the past few days, your ownage is complete. Might as well bury the thread... maybe we an put it down there next to your credibility.

both guys' contributions were considerable. without either, the celtics would be the champs.

Great post. I can't imagine how anyone could say that Kobe wasn't the MVP. Did he have a Finals performance that will be one of the all time greats? Probably not? But he was still MVP. His numbers were a lot better in last year's Finals, but he arguably played as well in this year's Finals considering the quality of the opponent and their defense.
He definitely was a little too quick to shoot in Game 7 and forced a lot of shots, but he made up for it with his 15 rebounds (including 4 on the offensive end) and team defense. Rajon Rondo was kept in control for most of the series and Kobe did well for the most part in playing off him to help with clogging passing lanes and help with double teams. Anyone who watches the Lakers can see that he facilitates the offense by drawing double teams and helping free up his teammates. As bad a game shooting Kobe was having, I imagine a Celtics fan were holding their breath as the lead got smaller hoping that Kobe wouldn't get hot. The guy has done it so many times that you'd be crazy not to be worried. So was it one of the greatest Finals performances of all time? No. Did he deserve the MVP? Absolutely.

two words lakers fans, tiago splitter!!!
spurs are the only team in the west that can beat the lakers, cant wait till next year!!
Any news on if Splitter is coming? I can't imagine he has anything left to prove in Spain, but the I wonder if he'd be willing to take a pay cut to play in the NBA.
Anyway, the West will be interesting next season. Most of the cap space is in the East, so I'm interested in how the free agents play out. It will be interesting if Dallas re-signs Haywood and how Butler does with them for a full season and if Cuban can swing any sign-and-trades. Houston will get Yao back. Oklahoma City has cap space and will only get better. The Clippers have cap space and will have Blake Griffin. Portland has to be healthier next season. Denver will be interesting with George Karl back but they're hard to figure out. Phoenix and Utah seem to be the teams poised to fall, but I've learned never to count Utah out. The Spurs will be good but a lot of that depends on Duncan's play and getting another big like Splitter can only help him.

Blah, blah, blah. :)
The Lakers would still be struggling to get over the hump if it weren't for Jerry West doing them a favor when he was on his way out in Memphis.
So screw the Lakers and The Logo for handing them a quality player for peanuts.
You mean like Kevin Edward McHale handed Kevin Garnett to the Celtics on his way out of Minnesota ?
Oh, and since you obviously missed it, Memphis' owner said that he ( and it was his decision only ) had Gasol on the trading block for almost a year and NOBODY wanted to give him what he was asking for, which was mainly a last year contract player. He was willing to give away Gasol for free as long as somebody would take on his salary without giving anything back ( in terms of long term contracts ). He said that all the calls he got back was for over the hill players and/or broken players with 2 and 3 years left on their contracts.
It was LOGO who squeezed out Marc Gasol, who's a solid center, Crittendon AND two #1 picks from the Lakers.

Still trying to figure out why Kobe got MVP. He played fairly average the whole series and **** the bed tonight. It was hardly a dominant effort by him. If someone has the answer, let me know. I won't hold my breath.
Except for game 7, he was the best player in the series, and it wasn't even close. Sure, some players stood out in different games, but none over the length of the series.
But he did NOT have a great series, as per his standards..

Ugh. I hate that the Lakers won and I don't feel bad, at all, for saying it. Them winning is right up there with the Eagles and The Yankees for me. I can't stand to see those teams win anything.
Thankfully the Eagles never let me down and choke in title games like they're supposed to.
The one really hilarious thing about these basketball threads though, even more so than other threads around here, are when people go around proclaiming their own ownage and how they own other posters.
Here's a tip folks...if you're having to claim yourself the one whose 'owning' someone then more than likely you're not owning anyone.

Now you know what I have felt 9 times! I hate losing to the Celtics more than anything. I grew up with it in the 60s when we lost to them 6 times in the finals. The 3 times we have beaten Boston in the finals were the sweetest ever!
Great rivalry though and I hope we meet again next year! We still owe you guys a few more.

Well said....
