Cedric Benson busted for assault PFT
Note, didnt Goodell say that teams sign troubled players that have had issues with arrests, etc, would get fined or draft picks taken away? Now, what are you going to do Goodell?

A month ago, it appeared that NFL players had learned from the experiences of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Memorial Day weekend came and went without a single arrest.
But that doesn't mean it came without any incidents.
Bengals running back Cedric Benson has been arrested in Austin, Texas for an assault that allegedly occurred on May 30, according to Tom Plohetski of Statesman.com. He allegedly punched a bar employee in the face at Annie's West.
Benson faces charges of assault with injury. He has posted bail.
A top-five pick of the Bears in 2005, Benson's tenure in Chicago ended two years ago, after Benson was arrested for drunk boating and drunk driving within a relatively short time frame.
The latest incident comes at a time when Benson hopes to get a new contract from the Bengals.
Benson joined the Bengals during the 2008 season, and he played well enough to land a two-year deal, after testing the free-agent market. He's due to earn a base salary of $2.65 million in 2010.

I didn't think so.
I really don't see Goodell coming down on any teams unless a single team continually has an issue with signing problematic players and watching them get in trouble.

Benson is a knuckle-head.
That said, how do Bengals constantly get in trouble? Talk about a franchise in need of a culture-overhaul.

where did this come from? I don't recall teams ever being punished for an off field incident by a player.

best i remember, didnt goodell say that teams that sign troubled players, and if those players get into trouble again, that goodell would sanction those teams either by fines or taking away draft picks?
something like that;

that would set a pretty big precedence if goodell starts punishing teams for the actions of their players.

NFL strengthens personal conduct policy
Apr 10, 6:43 pm EDT
Email Print NEW YORK (TICKER) —Two hours after handing out suspensions to Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, the NFL announced changes to its longstanding personal conduct policy on Tuesday.
The revisions focused on increased levels of discipline for violations of the policy along with expanded educational and support programs.
“It is important that the NFL be represented consistently by outstanding people as well as great football players, coaches and staff,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. “We hold ourselves to higher standards of responsible conduct because of what it means to be part of the National Football League.
AdChoices
“We have long had policies and programs designed to encourage responsible behavior, and this policy is a further step in ensuring that everyone who is part of the NFL meets that standard. We will continue to review the policy and modify it as warranted.”
Discipline for individuals that violate the policy will include larger fines and longer suspensions.
Repeat violations of the policy will be dealt with aggressively, including discipline for repeat offenders even when the conduct itself has not yet resulted in a conviction of a crime.
Jones and Henry were the first to feel the effect of the repeat offender revision. Jones was suspended for the entire 2007 season and Henry was banned eight games for violating the personal conduct policy and engaging in conduct detrimental to the league on numerous occasions.
Each player must earn the right to be reinstated.
Under the new policy, individuals must earn their way back to active status by fully complying with professional counseling and treatment that include evaluation on a regular basis.
“We believe that these are steps that the commissioner needs to take and we support the policy,” NFL Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw said. “It is important that players in violation of the policy will have the opportunity and the support to change their conduct and earn their way back.”
Clubs will also be subject to discipline in cases involving violations of the personal conduct policy.
The Bengals have had nine of their players arrested since the start of the 2006 season.
Educational programs have also been expanded.
The annual rookie symposium of all drafted players will be expanded to include mandatory year-round rookie orientation by all clubs that will reinforce the information presented at the June symposium.
An expanded annual life skills program for all players and clubs will be mandatory. These briefings will cover laws pertaining to possession of guns, drinking and driving, domestic disputes and other matters, including gang-related activities in the community that could be of significance to players, coaches and other club-related personnel.
Goodell conducted hearings with Jones and Henry last Tuesday after meeting with a newly formed players advisory committee that worked with the league in formulating the new player conduct policy.

JMO, Goodell has done more good than bad during his tenure so good luck with that. The owners like him and they just gave him a 5-yr contract extension.

I agree. Either the NFL is serious about cleaning up it's image or it's not. Goodell sends a clear message that the NFL intends to uphold a certain image and he intends to enforce it.

Cedric Benson could be in big trouble if he didn't report "incident"
Posted by Mike Florio on June 29, 2010 12:56 PM ET
Bengals running back Cedric Benson was arrested today for an incident that occurred, allegedly, 30 days ago.
And while the NFL and the Bengals necessarily know about the arrest, given the widespread publicity it has received, it remains to be seen whether the league and/or the team knew about the incident that gave rise to Benson's cruise in the back of a cruiser.
The Personal Conduct Policy contains clear language regarding the obligations of a player who potentially commits a violation: "The League must be advised promptly of any incident that may be a violation of this policy, and particularly when any conduct results in an arrest or other criminal charge. Players and club employees must report any such incident to the club, which must then report it to NFL Security at (800) NFL-XXXX. Failure to report an incident will constitute conduct detrimental and will be taken into consideration in making disciplinary determination under this policy. Clubs are also required to report incidents that come to their attention."
The two questions as to Benson become, first, whether he reported the incident to the Bengals and, second, whether the Bengals reported the incident to the NFL.
Given that Benson's agents reportedly had been trying to get Cedric a new contract, our guess is that Benson told no one about the situation (including his agents), and that he assumed/hoped/prayed nothing would come of it.
So is it fair to impose enhanced penalties on Benson if he simply thought it was a minor skirmish that would blow over? Given the language of the Personal Conduct Policy, yes.

Every NFL fan in every NFL city and every hick town in between could sign that petition and it would do no good. Until such time as Goodell in power causes the NFL to lose money the owners will back him. Right now, he is making them money. He's as safe as in his mama's arms.

I know that Hostile, but just like one guy had a webpage soley built to get Goodell fired, which did no good, but he did something about it, spoke his mind, at least he did something, even if it did no good.
It lets me get it out of my system, if Goodell tries to do anything to our players, while not doing anything to other players.
I just cant stand Goodell, kinda like you dont like george allen, or some other people like the post you made.

Exactly. NFL owners choose him for that very reason. It was also players like Witten and some other who went to the commissioner about cracking down on behavior.

Sad for the NFL.
I think this guy is a punk and follows along the lines of stupidity far too often.
I think it stems from the feeling of entitlement. This job in the NFL is a priviledge not a right. Stop abusing it.
