Charles Woodson on Aaron Rodgers: "best quarterback in the league"
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 8, 2010 1:23 PM ET
Packers cornerback Charles Woodson spends plenty of time studying film of the league's top quarterbacks. But he says the best of the bunch is the one on his own team.
In an interview with 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., Woodson said he believes Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the league, and that Rodgers has been underrated because the Packers' offensive line hasn't done a good enough job protecting him.
"As far as A-Rod is concerned, I told the Monday Night crew last year, I said, 'If this guy, if they protect him the way he needs to be protected, he's the best quarterback in the league,' and I stand by that," Woodson said, per SportsRadioInterviews.com. "If you look at last season, you take a guy that had over 50 sacks that still threw over 4,000 yards, that's incredible."
In fairness to the Packers' offensive line, some of those sacks are more the result of Rodgers holding onto the ball too long than a lack of protection. But even if Woodson is slightly overstating Rodgers' abilities, it has to feel good for Rodgers to know that the team's defensive leader thinks so highly of him.
Woodson also spoke out about Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, saying that in the NFL, "the consensus is that nobody can understand how you can get $100 million and not work." And Woodson says that even though he'll turn 34 this season, "I could easily give you five more years."

So if Terrence Newman would have called Romo the best QB in the league last year, would you have had the same reaction?
No.

Rodgers is good. I knew he would be fine after Farve left. Best QB I don't think so he's not even top 5.

Well, let me say that if the Dallas offensive line protects Tony Romo the way he needs to be protected, he will surpass Aaron Rodgers in every statistical category, other than sacks.
And Charles, at 34, in July, you may be all-pro, but in November, you may be gasping for air. Better plan on saving yourself for the Dallas Cowboys.

Woodson is a machine. I didn't realize he was that old. But I guess so . . .
It was way back in 1998 when he undeservedly won the Heisman instead of Peyton Manning.
Oh well . . . here's hoping his age starts to catch up to him this year.

I would consider Rodgers as one of the upper tier QB's in the league.

I agree and his O Line was not particularly good. Also propping a team mate is standard procedure. Nothing really to see here.

I would also, I don't see the big deal, I was very impressed when I saw him play, and what else would you expect a teammate to say about his QB.

I'm sticking with my Cowboys/Packers NFC Championship Game. It will be a rematch, obviously. The two teams who lost in the divisional round and lost on the road will fight for the Super Bowl.
If Felix Jones rushes for 1200-1400 yards during the season, that game will be in Dallas.

Since he has taken over the starter’s job he has 58 TD passes and 20 Int and avg 64% accuracy those are damn good numbers last year alone 30 TD and 7ints.
I'm not a big fan of Rodgers but unless you have some mental issues or just have no clue it is hard to look at those numbers and come to any other conclusion than the guy is very talented and compared with 31 other QB’s in the league those numbers would suggest he is one of the tops in the league. People need to put away their prejudice of the team a guy plays for and look at the simple facts.

I think Rodgers is legit, but I will be amazed if he equals that 30/7 TD/Int. ratio this year. With numbers like that, teams are going to come up with better ways to defend Rodgers and even if they don't, I think Rodgers may come down to earth a little bit this year.
We'll see, maybe I'm wrong and maybe the hype machine is for a good reason, but I need to see another season like last before I start drinking the kool-aid.
I still think Brees is the best QB in the NFC and I think a lot of people are underestimating NOs chances of repeating out of the NFC.

I agree I don't think you could expect those type of numbers every year (30td/7ints) but in his 1st 2 season as a full time starter he has put up very good numbers and really no reason to think he will not produce at a high level his coming season. As for the best I think he is in the top tier of QB along with Brees.

Agreed, if he's not top 5 now, which i don't think he is, he probably will so at some point.

It just hit me that Green Bay lost in the wildcard round to the Cardinals.
Revised Playoff teams:
Dallas
Green Bay
Atlanta
San Francisco
New York Giants
Minnesota
Washington out and Giants in. New Orleans could crash the Vikings' party.

I'm not sure about #1, but I think he's pretty darn close. It's hard to argue with Manning, Brady, and Brees...all SB winning QB's.
I do know one thing though....he scares me more than most. For one thing he is awesome with the deep ball, and he also has like 14 WR's that can go get it.
There are few individual players that scare me in this league (when we are playing them) and Rogers is one of them.
Here is my list:
Brady
Welker
Moss
P. Manning
A. Peterson
Rogers
Brees
Tuck
Rothlesberger (I know, I know...but he is good, and probably the best at making something out of nothing in this league!)

Rodgers is getting a lot of respect in this thread and I agree with it. IMO Romo and Rodgers are very close to each other right now in terms of ability, both being near the top of the league. A couple things really impress me about Rodgers.
1. How well he is performing under enormous expectations after replacing a legend.
2. His athletic ability. Watch any GB game and you notice he can really move.
3. 26 years old?! you kidding me.
4. I like his honestly in interviews. Ragging on Kornheiser I can agree with.
5. Shutting up the the teams and critics who passed on him. We all remember that draft where people were talking about A Rodg going #1 overall and growing up a 49's fan, only to have San Fran pick Alex Smith over him. Then he had to sit for like four hours in that VIP room sweating it out and waiting to get picked.
Certainly he isn't the number one guy in the league. If I had one season to win a superbowl I would probably take Peyton. I don't have a problem with Woodson saying so though, the vet was defensive MVP and probably has a lot of respect in that GB locker room. Its always a good thing when you back your QB like that.

Rodgers is playing at an alarming level for just starting in this league for 2 years.
Sit back and watch folks - he is for real and he is going to be a round a LONG time.

Rodgers regular season record = 17 wins 15 losses
Romo's regular season record = 38 wins 17 losses
Rodgers playoff record = 0-1
Romo's playoff record = 1-3
The only thing to compare is regular season record and unless Rodgers can win 21 of his next 23 games, that's not even a discussion.
Also, Romo has never had a losing season. Rodgers took a Favre led 13-3 NFC Championship Game Packers team and went 6-10 with them the next year. Romo took a 9-7 Bledsoe led Cowboys team and went 13-3 with them his first full year starting.
