Report: Favre tells Vikings he's not returning

Posted by Mike Florio on August 3, 2010 10:37 AM ET
Many of you scoffed at our report of uneasiness (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/08/02/uneasiness-in-vikings-camp-over-favres-future/) in Mankato regarding the Brett Favre (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=1744) situation.

Scoff no more.

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Favre began telling team officials (http://twitter.com/JuddZulgad/status/20226077747) on Monday night that he will not return for another season. The disclosure comes on the heels of an observation from Zulgad that team "ownership and power brokers" held a meeting at practice that "looked very intense."

Zulgad also reports that Favre plans to issue a press release later today. Apparently, Favre's injured ankle "has not responded" after surgery and rehab.

Jay Glazer of FOX also reports that Favre has begun communicating the message to teammates.

We've been insisting that, before Favre returns, he needs to persuade everyone that he won't return. Just like he did last year.

Was anyone really surprised by this?

If true, this must have come out of nowhere and really blindsided the Vikes. Jay Glazer was just on Colin Cowherd yesterday laughing at the notion that Favre wasn't coming back and calling it ridiculous.

Flashing as breaking news on NFL Network also.

Good news for every other team in the NFC, the were the best team in the NFC last year and it was a shame they shot themselves in the foot in the championship game.

You never know with Farv but it's not just on PFT all the news outlets are flashing breaking news now!

Wonder if the Vikes have Daunte Culpepper's name on speed dial? I bet they are hopping the Skins do not sign McNabb so they will have a shot at him next season.

I lost any respect I had for Favre the last time he pulled this joke(?). If it's true he isn't going to play this season, but didn't alert them until yesterday (or maybe last Monday?); he doesn't deserve any respect from anybody else.

BTW: I remember when Barry Sanders (out of the blue) told the Lions 1-3 days before TC was to start that he didn't want to play football anymore. I couldn't believe that a player would make that kind of decision just days before TC was to begin. Didn't matter what he thought of the Lions coaching staff/ownership, how could he let his team down so badly.

mark my words, this is just part of the drama
he wants the headlines, he wants the adulation, he wants all the hand wringing, he wants the vikings to beg him

he will be there for the first game
we will beat the crap out of him

I wont believe it until he's not there on the final gun of the last game of the year. ha

October may roll around and his ankle has responded.

A little bit more especially in the NFC North but the core elite teams are still there minus the Vikings.

When you say "they" you really mean "Favre" right? He's the one who cost them the game with that horrible pass he got intercepted at the end there. He choked. Typical Favre. Makes some horrible decisions sometimes.

From what I say he's texting people, "This is it."

Besides the obvious fact that the text is typical cryptic Favre bull****, it suggests to me he means this is his last year, not that he's necessarily retiring.

And I think that's exactly what he wanted. "This is it", doesn't resolve a damn thing.

I won't believe it until the start of the season

and Rosenfels or Jackson is taking the first snap

The Green Bay Packers. What a joke of a division the NFC North becomes without Favre. Cutler and the Bears = 6-10 at best. Stafford and the Lions = 5-11 at best and Jackson and the Vikings = 7-9 at best. Now we are all going to have to hear about how great Aaron Rodgers is because he's able to destroy what just went from the 24th ranked schedule to probably the worst schedule in football.

On a positive note, at least the Cowboys now get to play the Tavaris Jackson led Vikings.

I kind of think he means it this time; there has been rumors that his ankle was worse then originally thought and lets face it- 41 year old ankles do tend to not heal well.

I guess people missed that the Vikings won the NFC North and made the playoffs without Favre 2 years ago and Jackson at qb most of the time. They probably won't win the division but there is still a lot of talent on that team.

Hey Brad, I'm retiring till TC is over okay?

 Cool.

I really want him back, I can't think of a better person to destroy in his final game. NFC Championship.

I believed all along that he would retire. He's an old man, yet he miraculously had the best season and best stats of his career last season. Coming back would have been a downer in every single way unless he won the SB.

There's no way in hell he could have kept his TD/INT ratio as high as it was last season.

Plus, the Saints just provided the blueprint on how to beat him...beat the hell out of him, and it's not like they had the top defense in the NFL. I'm sure Bret is still aching with his ankle and realized at high school camp that he just wasn't ready to go do it again and that he wasn't likely to be as fortunate as he was last season, both in production and in health.

He didn't win a super bowl, but he's going out on a high note.

He certainly owes no apology to the Vikings; they are the ones who begged him to play last season and let him come and go as he pleased. He gave them what they paid for, and it was certainly their job to prepare for football without him, either this season or next. They chose to sit pat with the QBs they have instead of going after someone else...even if Bret came back, their depth would have been better this season, and they'd have been prepared for next season.

The hell with the Vikings, and the hell with Bret Favre.

October may roll around and his ankle has responded.

I could see him deciding to come back for a stretch run but only if the Vikes are still in playoff contention. But then there is always the week before the season starts when he is a home thinking about his record for consecutive games starting coming to and end and decides to play.

Did I miss where he is making calls or press conferences announcing his retirement? This is entirely a creation of the media and a few sources at this point.

Ha nobody knows a thing.... Not one person can confirm it as truth just reports that he told management and teammates but not one has confirmed it. You know Farve is not going to come out and say anything dude flat out needs the spotlight on himself.

I'm starting to think this was just a PR stunt by Farve!

If this is another stunt, I truly hope something bad happens to him. I try not to wish for injuries but when you deserve it, you deserve it. Nothing worse than a media whore.

Surprise surprise, preseason is almost here and Favre wasn't getting enough attention, watch him come back again once his ego has been stroked for a few weeks :lmao2:

The Qb was Gus Frerotte most of the season.
